HAT BRIM TRIMMING TOOL Filed Feb. 16, 1951 In uenior c/ H/v /YoscA A llame y Patented Mar. i933 iNiiiwi HAT IBB/1M TIR-IMMING TOOL Application led February 16, 1.931. Serial No. 516,262.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand operated tools for trimming the brims of hats.
t is the primary object of the invention to provide a hand tool which is capable of cutting either a straight or a bevelled edge upon the brim of a hat.
it is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the aforementioned l@ character in wiich there are a plurality of knives either of which may be adjusted to cutting position.
With the above and other objects in view, reference will be had toi the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 2, and;
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the cut edge of a hat brim and setting forth the two different types of cut of which the present tool is capable.
Referring to the drawing by reference character, 5 designates a hat crown engaging member and this member has a curved edge 6 adapted for conformation with the outer face of a hat crown. Carried by the curved edge 6, there is a plate or the like 7 which is adjustable by means of screws or the like 8 in order that this curved edge may be so shaped as to conform tothe curvature of the crown of the hat upon which the tool is to operate.
Connected to the hat crown engaging member 5, there is a hat brim engaging member 10 and this member 10 preferably extends at right angles to the member 5. The member 10 is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 11, and slidably mounted in said slot 11, there is a slide or similar member 12. One side wall of the slot- 11 is provided with suitable calibrations 13 and by means of these calibrations, the width of hat brims may be determined in a manner to be hereinafter described.
The member 12 is secured in position with relation to the member 10 by :tightening of a wing nut or the like 14 carried by a bolt 15 which extends through the hat brim engaging member 10 and arranged transversely thereof in such a manner that as the nut le is tightened, the member 12 will be clamped within the slot 11 olf the hat brim engaging member 10.
The member. 12 carries a cutter block orv the like 16 and said cutter block 16 may be secured to the member 12 by means of a screw or the like 17. rlhe cutter block 16 has a vertically disposed passage 18 and mounted in this vertically disposed passage,
ythere is a knife 19. The cutter block 16 is provided with an enlarged boss or the like 20, and mounted therein there `is a screw 21 whichv is adapted to intersect the passage 18 and engage the knife 19 to hold the same in its adjusted position. A lock nut 22 may be employed to secure the screw 21 against accidental displacement when it is holding the blade 19 in adjusted position.
The cutter block 16 is also provided with an angularly disposed passage 25, and mounted in said passage there is a knife 26. An enlarged boss or the like 27 provides the means for mounting an adjusting screw 28 and a lock nut 29 may be employed to hold the adjusting screw 28 against accidental displacement.
The device operates in the following manner.
rEhe two knives 19 and 26 as will be evident from inspection of Figure 2, are adjustable to a common center` or cutting point, but it is to be understood that these knives 19 and 26 are at all times employed separately, and preferably never together to cut the brim of a hat.
When it is desired to cut a straight edge upon the brim of a hat as designated by the numeral 30, the knife 19 is adjusted to cutting position and when it is desired to cut a bevelled edge such as designated 35 in Figure 1l, the knife 26 is adjusted to the cutting position.
Pivotally mounted as at 38 upon the hat brim engaging member` 10, there is a member 34 which extends forwardly of the hat brim engaging member and provides a guard to prevent engagement of the knives with a bench or other work support such as 36 and it will be noted that the hat brim is inserted between this member 34 and the hat brim engaging member l2 as best illustrated in Figure 2.
Thus it will be apparent that the present invention provides a hand tool by means of which either straight or bevelled edges may be formed upon the peripheral edge of a hat brim, and while the invention has been herein illustrated in a preferred form, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction herein shown7 and may be carried out in other forms which rightfullyY fall within he scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States, is;
1. In a hand tool for trimming hats, a hat crown engaging member, a hat brim engaging member, connected to and extending at right angles to said hat crown engaging member, said. hat brim engaging member having a longitudinal slot and longitudinal tongues extending inwardly from the sides of said slot, a slide adjustably mounted in said slot and having grooves receiving said tongues, said slide being provided with a transverse slot intermediate its upper and lower sides, a securing element extending through said last-named slot and hat brim engaging member for securing said slide in an adjusted position, and a cutter supporting block carried by said slide.
2. In a hand tool for trimming hats, a hat crown engaging member, a hat brim engaging member, connected to and extending at right angles to said hat crown engaging member, said hat brim engaging member having a longitudinal slot and longitudinal tongues extending inwardly from the sides of said slot, a slide adjustably mounted in said slot and having grooves receiving said tongues, said slide being provided with a transverse slot intermediate its upper and lower sides, a securing element extending through said last-named slot and hat brim engaging member for securing said slide in an adjusted position, a cutter supporting block carried by said slide, and a guard plate pivoted upon said hat brim engaging member and extending beneath said cutter block in spaced relation thereto.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN MOSCA.
