Description

W. M. REAGAN. SCISSORS AND SHEARS SHARPENING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 3|. 19H.
IW/V/ 1 am W Pea 00 Patented Feb. 26, 1918 ZWWM bivrrnn s WILLIAM M. .REAGAN, 0F TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
SdISSORS AND SHEARS SHARPENING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 191?. Serial No. 199,496.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. REAGAN [a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissorsand Shears Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutlery and has more especial reference to an improved scissors and shears sharpening device.
T he invention has for its dominant object to provide .a device for firmly clamping the blades of scissors or shears in a position to insure the sharpening ofthe same at the proper angles, in order that they will be permitted to properly function.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a devicewhereby the blades of scissors or shears may be accurately and rapidly sharpened.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for permitting the adjusting of the device in order that the same may be adapted for receiving blades of varying thickness and widths and support the same in proper position for sharpening.
The improvements in the details and an rangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is dis closed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention;
. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a section through the same showing one of the blocks in elevation; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section therethrough. 7
Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, the improved clamping device comprises complemental blocks 1 and 2, the upper surfaces of which are beveled as indicated by the numeral 3. A. recessor seat 4 is formed in the block2 at a point adjacent the block 1 and as will be appreciated, is of a size and shape to correspond with the conventional design of the blades of scissors and shears.
A. plurality of ways 5 are formed. in the Patented rep. as, rare. I
block 2 and extend transversely of the same,
while other ways or slots 6 are also formed in the said block 2 and communicate with the lower portions of the several ways 5, 1t
being noted in this connection, that the ways 6 open onto the outer surface or sidewall of L the block 9.. L-sh-aped bolts 7 are provided and have the lateral portions thereof slidably arranged in the ways '5 while the vertically disposed portions thereof are'engaged with thumb nuts 8 arranged in the laterally extendingways 6.
Plates 9' are arranged upon the beveled upper surfaces 3 of the several blocks 1 and means, the purpose of which will be hereinafter apparent. Slotted plates 10 are secured to the outer side wall of the block 2 at points adjacent the ways 6 and serve as a guard for the block and the hands of the user.
Formed in the outer wall of the block 1 is a recess 11 having a substantially U-shaped guard plate 12 arranged over the same and adapted to slidably receive a cover 13. By this arrangement, it will be readily understood that a suitable receptacle is provided and in which an abrasive stone or other substance 14 may be normally arranged.
As means for connecting the-several blocks 1 and 2, alined transverse openings are formed in the same and receive bolts 15 therethrough, which bolts have wing nuts 16 turned into engagement with the screw threaded extremities thereof.
When using my improved sharpening device, the blades of a pair of scissors or shears such as indicated by the numeral S have one of the same engaged'between the blocks 1 and 2. The lL-shaped bolts 7 are now adjusted vertically until the beveled cutting edge of the blade is brought flush with the beveled upper surfaces of the said blocks 1 and 2, whereupon the blocks are clamped upon the blade by tightening the wing nuts 16 upon their respective bolts 15. The cover 13 is now moved to open position and the abrasive substance 14: taken therefrom and moved over the wear compensating plates 9 arranged on the beveled surfaces of the block 1 and 2. Inasmuch as the cutting portion of the blade of the shears S is arranged substantially flush with the surfaces of the plates 9, the same will be sharpened at the proper angle without further care or adj ust ment upon part of the user.
It is of course to be understood, that' scissors or shears having blades of different sizes may be readily arranged in my device by adjusting the L-shaped bolts 7 in order thatthe lateral portions thereof 'will sup-port the blades of the same in positions whereat the cu-ttin-g edges thereof are substantially flush With the wear compensating plates. 9., Morement of the blade during the sharpening operation; is positively prevented by adjusting wing. mas, 1.6av 1 0 e r sp ct bolts 15..
Manifestly, the construction shown is-citpables of considerable modification and such mQdificationas is; Within the, scope of my cl I consider Within the spirit of my in e tion.
I Persians hereo be el d, he nner wall; of
Copies of this patent man be obtained for one of said blocks being provided with a recess, blade supporting means adjustable vertically of the blocks and arranged in the recess portion, and means passing through said blocks for clamping the same upon a blade to be sharpened.
3; In a device of the character described, blocks having the upper portions thereof beveled and ways formed therein, adjustable supporting means arranged in said ways and having portions of the same projecting therebeyond, and means for clamping the blocks-upona blade to. be sharpened.
47. In. a deviceoi the character described, blocks having the upper portions, thereof beveled and ways formed, in. the same, the
inner wall of one, of said blocks being recessed, to receive a. blade, L-shaped bolts slidably arranged inv said ways, thumb nuts engaged with the screw threaded portions of said bolts, thelateral portions of the-bolts projecting into the recess. portion, and adjustabl' means for clamping the blocks. upon ablade to be sharpened.
In testimony whereof, I afii; my signature hereto.
