I 4 WASH-BOILER,
No. 190,029, 'Patent ed April 24, 1877.
l- I I I mlilllllllllilill l n l Enron PATENT HENRY GOTTHARDT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,029, dated April 24, 1877 application filed March 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GOTTHARDT,
of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and. v State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in \Vash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View, of my improved washboiler bottom detached, with portions broken away to show the construct-ion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relatesto certain improve.
ments in detachable or false bottoms for washboilers; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the drawing, the letter A indicates the body of a wash-boiler, which may be of any suitable size or shape. B is the false bottom, whichis made to fit closely in boiler A. The bottom B has a downwardly-projecting rim, 0, which elevates it a suitable distance from the bottom a of the boiler A. It also has two,
three, or more perforations, b 11, provided with downwardly-projecting rims or flanges c c, which reach the bottom of the boiler. The flanges 0 have perforations 01, through which the water may flow. D D are plugs, made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, which fit closely in the perforations b, and the perforated tubes forming the flanges 0. They are made long enough to reach nearly or quite to the top of the boiler or kettle A.
In operation the false bottom is placed in the boiler A, as in Fig. l, the plugs D being inserted into the perforations 12. Water and soap are now placed in the boiler in sufficient quantity to just cover the false bottom B, and
the clothes that are to be washed are finally placed in the boiler, packing them closely around the staffs or plugs D. These (the plugs D) are now removed, thus leaving empty spaces or channels in the closely-packed clothing, just above the perforations b. When the water is brought to boil it will ascend through these channels, thoroughly percolating the clothing and loosening the dirt, which may afterward be removed by rinsing in cold or tepid water.
My improved wash-boiler bottom possesses the advantages of simplicity and durability. It may be easily applied or adapted to boilers or kettles of any construction or shape. It is easily handled, and is efficient in the performance of the functions for which it is intended.
I- am aware of the patent to Mercier, reis' sued January 3,1871, in view of which I do not, broadly, claim the combination of the Wash-boiler bottom with the removable plugs D; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States The false bottom B, having downwardlyprojecting rim or flange U and perforations b b, and provided with downwardly-projecting perforated flanges c, in combination with the detachable plugs or staffs I) D, arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I'have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY GOTTHABDT.
Witnesses:
HENRY HEGKMAN, Gus KAMMERER.
