CONVERTIBLE DI SPLAY CASE Filed Sept. 30, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Feb. 28, 1933 UNITED STATES m oFFicE "WILLIAM M. BUTTE-10K, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GELLULOID CORPORATION, A CORPORATION OF NEW J EBSEY CONVERTIBLE nisrLAY CASE Application filed September 30, 1929. Serial No. 393,160.
This invenion pertains to the general class of cases and particularly to the class of display cases.
Display cases are generally used for packing, shipping and exhibiting articles of va rious kinds such as toilet articles, etc. Cases of this character are generally well finished and represent relatively speaking, a substantial investment. Upon delivery of the goods to the jobber or retailer, the articles are generally exhibitedin the cases in which they have been shipped. These cases are set up in show cases or on shelves, tables, etc. Because of the varying dimensions of show cases, shelves, tables, etc., as well as to permit various types of artistic arrangement, a display case which may be adjusted to a plurality of positions is highly desirable.
An object of this invention therefore, is to provide a display case that may be adjusted to a plurality of positions.
A further object of this invention is to provide a display case of a convertible nature such that articles therein may be exhibited in the most desirable manner.
A further object of this invention is to provide a display case that is readily adaptable for use in show cases or on tables and shelves, etc. of any dimensions; that is low in cost, simple in construction; of light weight; durable and lasting in character; and otherwise highly satisfactory for its intended purpose.
Many other objects and advantages will become apparent to persons skilled in the art as the specification proceeds.
In the drawings wherein like characters are appended to like parts throughout the various figures,
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a display case.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1 and showing the cover raised.
Figure 3 is a transverse section showing the cover in a second position, a third position being shown dotted.
Figure 4 is a transverse section showing the cover in a fourth position.
Figure 5 is a transverse section showing the cover in a fifth position.
Figure'G is a front elevation showing the display case in a sixth position.
Figure 7 is an end view of the display case when inth-e position shown in Figure 6. 7
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a display case having a compartment 2 and a cover 3. The cover 3 may be hinged to the compartment 2'by any suitable means such as illus trated at 4. The side 5 of cover 3, one edge of which is hinged to the compartment 2, is hinged on its opposite edge to the back 6 of cover 3 as illustrated at 7 This particular construction not only permits the display case to be used in the same manner as ifthe side 5 were not hinged at 7 but also permits a. plurality of positions which are not otherwise attainable.
For instance, in Figure 2, the cover may be raised in the customary manner. To hold the cover in place, a hook 8 attached at 9 to cover 3and a pin 10 attachedto compartment 2, may be provided. When the display casev is closed, the hook 8 merely drops to the position shown dotted in Figure 2.
In Figure 3, the display case is shown with the cover thrown all the way back. An alter nate position is shown in dotted lines.
In Figure 4, a fourth position is shown wherein the side 5 remains in the position it assumes when the case is closed, the cover 3,
except for the side 5 being thrown all theway open. This position is preferred in some instances and may be'used to advantage for double display purposes. It is-to be noted that a panel or tray in the compartment 2 will be held horizontally and a tray or panel in the cover 3 will be held in an inclined position when the display case is thus arranged.
In Figure 5, cover 3 is shown under and supporting compartment 2. This position is preferred when the show case, table or shelf is narrow, and particularly in show cases that are relatively small in height and width.
In Figures 6 and 7 is illustrated a sixth position wherein the compartment 2 is held in an inclined position and the cover 3 in a more or less vertical position. Articles may be displayed in a particularly advantageous manner when the case is in this position. It is to be noted that the display Case when in this position, may be placed upon relatively narrow shelves or tables, and may be used in a relatively narrow show case that is sufliciently high to accommodate same.
5 The panel or tray 11 which is shown having indentafions 19 adapted for holdi I toilet articlesmwy, of course, be replaced y any other suitable device or may be eliminated entirely as referred.
It iso course obvious that any other device may be substituted for the side 5, such for instance as a link having its endshingedly connected to the compartment 2 and the cover 3. The points of attachment (iii the link 15 would preferably be those of the hinges illustrfled 1n the drawings. The side 5' in such a case could, if preferred, be intact wit'hthe m 3: In fact, the side 5, together w'iththe hin shown, comprises a link mechanism.

y 1-. A case of the character described comgrlsing a compartment and a cover, the'latter aving a movable side, a hinge connecting sai'll c'over and said side, said side being also connected to the free edgeof a: side of said cmnpmtment which is incapable of motion in relation to that compartment.
2. A case of the character desenli'ed comprlsfiig two substantially similar compartmews, one of saidezzipntments having a 5 side Hingedl'y conn thereto and to the ofa side of the othercompsrtment, the latter sidebeing" incapable of in nation to said other compartment.
3. A case oflme charmerdescvibesmm prising awe substantially similar compartmeats corresponding sides of which are gigedlyi connected long their free edges one of said sides being pivotallyeonmMte'the compartment of whiehit forms a plat-and the other'o'f said sides being in capable ofimetibm in relation to the eompsrt moi which it is a port.
