In the lock-joints for sheet-piling there occur always stresses, independently from the fact ,whether the lock-joint is placed in the neutral axis or in the outer layer. Shifting,
5 or torsional movements of the sheets, one in relation to the other, however, influence the resistance coeflicient of the wall. For reasons relating to the processes of rolling and ramming, it is however impossible to avoid lock-joints altogether. In most cases it is possible to ram two or three sheets locked together. The joints of such a unit which is to be rammed at one and the same time, can be made by welding or by some other means. In the case of welding, however, it has been found that the play-room which every lock- .joint must have for reasons related to the rolling process, is a disadvantage. In order to bridge over this play-room, the welding must be extensive and in the welded seam there occur stresses due to shrinking which often give rise to crevices in the seam.
The present invention eliminates these disadvantages in that the play-room is bridged over by a wedge or a flat piece of iron. The wedge is driven in, until the inner lock-parts come to lie entirely one against the other. The wedge is then welded to both sheets. This connection eliminates any longitudinal or transverse displacement and any torsional movement in the lock-joint. The wedges and the welded seams need be arranged only at ,given distances one from the other. In order to avoid tensional stresses in the welded seam, counter-wedges can be driven in, on the opposite side, at greater intervals, and these counter-wedges can also be welded on.
In the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the invention is represented, of which drawing Figure 1 shows one form of the lock-j oint, and
Figure 2 shows another form of the lockjoint.
In Figure 1 the sheets CL and b are held together, for example, by a Larssen-lock. The wedge 0 is positioned in the space-room between the lock-parts and connected thereto by the welded seams (Z and e.
In Figure 2 a counterwedge is arranged besides the wedge on the opposite side of the lock-Joint in the space-room between the lockparts and connected thereto in the same manner as the first mentioned wedge by two welded seams, so that a rigid lock-joint without tensional stresses is obtained.
, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A rigid lock-joint of sheet piles, consisting of engaged lock-parts, additional pieces positioned in the natural space-room between the lock-parts, and welded seams connecting the additional pieces to the lockparts.
2. A rigid lock-joint of sheet piles, consisting of engaged lock-parts, wedge-shaped additional pieces positioned in the natural space-room between the lock-parts, and welded seams connecting the additional pieces to the lock-parts.
3. A rigid lock-joint of sheet piles, consisting of engaged lock-parts, additional pieces positioned at either side of the lockjoint in the natural space-room between the lock-parts, and welded seams connecting the additional pieces to the lock-parts.
4. A rigid lock-joint of sheet piles, consisting of engaged lock-parts, wedge-shaped additional pieces positioned at either side of the lock-joint in the natural space-room between the lock-parts, and welded. seams connecting the additional pieces to the lockparts.
5. A rigid lock-joint of sheet piles, consisting of engaged lock-parts, wedge-shaped additional pieces positioned in the natural space-room between the lock-parts, and welded seams at either side of the additional pieces connecting the additional pieces to tllo lock-parts.
6. A rigid lock-joint of sheet piles, consisting of engaged lock-parts, wedge-shaped additional pieces positioned at either side of the lock-joint in the natural space-room between the lock-parts, and welded seams at either side of the additional pieces connecting the additional pieces to the lockparts.
7. Sheet piling composed of locked piles having additional pieces positioned in the natural space-room between the lock-parts and Welded to the lock-parts.
8. Sheet piling composed of locked piles having additional pieces positioned at either side of the lock in the natural space-room between the lock-parts and Welded to the lock-parts.
