Description

'July- 31, 1934. w. PRIELIPP BUTT WEL'DED JOINT FOR SHEET PILINGS Filed Feb. 16, 1933 Fig.1
I!!! iiililidllll- III/[ll]! IlIlllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Q 6 A N 8 s /n vemon." 14K Pricili Patented Jui v i934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Walter Prielipp,
Dortmund, Germany, assignor to the firm Vereinigte Stahlwerke Aktiengesellschaft, Dusseldorf, Germany Application February In Germany 16, 1933, Serial No. 657,088 February 26, 1932 2 Claims. (Cl. 61-60) The invention relates to a butt-welded connection of sheet pilings and the method for the manufacture of said connections.
Hitherto butt-welded joints have been rigidly constructed. However, this rigid connection in case of iron sheet piling is often disadvantageous, since iron sheet pilings serving for instance for tightening a retaining dam must be capable of following the settling and other elastic motions of the soil. The pile planing musttherefore be elastic and yielding to a considerable degree.
According to the invention, the drawbacks connected with the known rigid butt weld are eliminated by adapting the butt plate inserted between the faces of the pile portions to be joined to the sectional form of the sheet pile. In this way, when the pile is bent or upset, the joint can follow, and cooperate in carrying out, sectional deformations of any pile section. The known types of continuous butt-plates would render alterations of cross-section of the joint impossible, which would create such unfavorable stresses just at the joint that the welds would be torn up and the planking lose its usefulness. A butt plate adapted to the shape of the profile afiords further the advantage that a profile thus joined can be rammed without difiiculty and the soil when settling will not adhere thereto.
Moreover the sheet pilings can be composed of several pieces of any desired length without affecting their elasticity, so that instead of exceedingly long piles, the transport of which is difficult, normal lengths can be used and even short waste pieces can be composed according to the invention to piles of normal'length which are well to be utilized. Furthermore it is possible to enlarge piles which already have been rammed, if afterwards a change of the length of the pile is required.
The illustrations show by way of example the joint of a U-shaped sheet piling, Fig. 1 being a cross section according to line 1-1 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 2 a side view thereof and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the piling parts lying in the near of the .butt joint and of the butt plate inserted therebetween.
The portions (1 and b of the piles are welded together by means of the butt plate 0 which is shaped like the profiles to be joined. In the present case it is of U-like shape corresponding to the shape of the pile. The outer ends of the butt plate 0 may extend only up to the connecting grooves, leaving said latters free, so that the next pile may be inserted at a staggered joint lying in a different plane, though the butt plates may also be extended to the center of the connecting groove and the joints of adjacent planks may be arranged on the same plane.
Moreover, the shape of the profile (pilings of Z- or other form) and the manner of connection of the joints has no bearing on the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is.
1. Transverse butt weld joint for sheet pilings, comprising at least two sheet piles of a desired profile lying with their ends opposite one another and. leaving a space room between them, a butt plate in the space room, the said plate having substantially the, shape of the piling profile, and beads at either side of the butt plate.
2. Transverse butt weld joint for sheet pilings, comprising at least two U-shaped sheet piles being provided with lock parts and lying with their ends opposite one another and leaving a space room between them, a butt plate in the space room, the said plate consisting of sheet metal and having an U-like outline corresponding to the U-shape of the sheet piles but being somewhat larger than the latter, the ends of the said butt plate leaving free the lock parts of the sheet piles, and beads at either side of the butt plate.
