The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports, and more particularly it pertains to a novel device for supporting books in open position for reading.

It is the primary object of the invention to provide a device of the aforementloned character which can be cheaply manufactured, thus providing an article which may be given gratis as an advertising medium.

It is a further object of the invention to provide such a device which is capableof shipment in a knocked down form, which will include a minimum number of elements,

and which can be easily and readily assembled by the recipient.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a device which will support a book in the open position, and which will, when 20 in use, provide means for holding the leaves of the book in proper position, and yet which will at the same time, not interfere with a free turning of the leaves by the reader.

The above and other objects will be apparent from the following description, and by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing a book supported thereon in reading position,

Figure 2 is a perspective view partly broken away illustrating the device with the book removed,

Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank from which one of the members is formed, and

Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the other member is formed.

A device constructed in accordance with the present invention consists of two members A and B formed of any suitable light bendable material of which cardboard is a very good example. The member A consti- 45 tutes a base for the member B which in turn provides an inclined rest for supporting a book in open inclined position for reading.

The member B preferably comprises a H rectangular piece of cardboard having two slots and 11 formed therein, the slots being formed adjacent opposite edges of the blank. One edge is notched as atl2, and the purpose of said notch will be hereinafter described. The blank is bent transversely of its body portion along the dash line indicated 55 by the reference character 13 to provide a book supporting area 14, and a prop 15. By reference to Figure 4 it will be noted that the cutout portion 10 is in the prop 15 and the cut out portion 11 and the notch 12 are injthe 60 book supporting portion 14:.

. The base A is formed from a rectangular blank of suitable material such as cardboard, and is cut adjacent one edge as indicated by the full line designated 16. This cut 16 pro- 5 vides an area 17 having a tongue 17 which may be bent upwardly along the dash line 18 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. This blank A is further out adjacent its cen- :2 tral portion along the line designated 19, to provide a tongue 20 which is adapted to stand upwardly from the base by bending along the dotted lines 21. The blank A is further out as indicated by the full line 22 to provide a body portion 23 which is adapted to be bent 75 upon the dotted lines 24 and 25 for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and this body portion is cut as indicated by the full lines 26 to form two areas 27. The blank A is fur ther out along the full lines designated 30 to 8 provide an area 31 which is adapted to be bent upwardly upon the dotted lines 32.

ln assembling the device in order'to' provlde a book support, the blank which forms the member B is bent along the dash line des- 5 ignated 13 as indicated in Figure 2. The area 17 is now bent along the line 18 and its tongue 17 inserted in the slot or opening 10 formed in the prop wall 15 of the member B as designated at 35 in Figure 2. The portion 20 of the blank which forms the base A is next bent upwardly upon the dotted lines 21 in Figure 3 and the tongue 36 of this portion 20 is inserted in the slot or cut out portion 11 as indicated at 38 in Figure 2.

The portion designated 23 is next bent up wardly upon the dotted line 25 and saidportion 23 is bent upon itself upon the dotted lines 2 1 and the edge formed by thecut line indicated 22 is inserted beneath the body portion 31 formed by the cut 'and folded upwardly upon the dotted line 32 as indicated at in Figure 2. In bending this body portion 23 upon itself upon the dotted lines 24, the small tongues 27 project upwardly as indicated at 41 in Figure 2 and these tongues 27 are adapted to engage the leaves of the book as indicated at 45 in Figure 1 and prevent the leaves from turning except when grasped and deliberately turned over'by the reader. V

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a novel form of book support which may be cheaply manufactured and which will be highly efiicient in supporting. a book in open position for reading, and while the device has been herein illustrated in a preferred form, it is tobe understood that the invention is not lim ited to the specific construction herein illusforms without departing from the spirit thereof.

1- A. device of the character described; comprising a cardboard base member, a .cardand, a prop therefor, and means carried by the base member for engagement with the book support and prop for removably attachingthem to the base member, said means comprising tongues formed in the base member and engageable in slots in the book support I and prop. A device of the character described comrising a cardboard base member, a cardoard book supporting member separate from the base member and adapted to fold upon itself to provide a. book support and a prop therefor, readily separable interengaging means carried by the base member, and the book support and the prop for removably attaching them to the base ,member, and flexible means carried by the base member for engagement with the edges of the leaves of, an open book on the book support to prevent accidental turning of the leaves of the book. V
