My invention relates to reels for carrying fish lines.
The essential objects of my invention are to facilitate the packaging and packing of i? the line, and the delivery of the same from will occur to those familiar with this art,
in view my invention consists of the elements and combinations thereof indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrative of my invention 'in form now best known to me for carrying out the principles thereof,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my novel reel or carrier,
Figures 2 and 3, sections of the same on lines 2-2 and 3-3 respectively of Figure 1,
` and Figure 4, a detail view of one of the guard members. Y
As herein shown my carrier or reel, preferably of aluminum, bakelite, or the like, comprises a circular disk 7 having a central opening 8 surrounded by a vertically extending open ended bearing or sleeve 9 integral with the disk. The margin of the disk is provided With an annular series of circular pockets or openings 10. Y
Integral With the margin of the disk within the series of holes is a vertically disposed annular guide partition 12, of the height of the bearing, and connected to the latter by integral braces or Webs 14 of like height.
Detachably engaging the webs are guard or guide members 16 composed of thin resilient material cut and bent from a sheet metal blank. Each comprises a shank 17 provided with depending lateral flanges 18. Continuous with the shank is a broad flat head 20. The shank with its resilient flanges forms a clip portion. The former rests upon the top edge of aA web whileA the flanges frictionally embrace the sides ofthe latter. The head 2O forms a radially projecting portion extending over a major portionA of the disk margin. Y
A package'or skein 2,2 of fish line 23, preliminarily wound, and bound by lease bands 24, is, before the application of the guide members 16, placed loosely upon the margin of the disk where it is loosely centered by the partition 12. The members 16 are next applied to the webs, and the projecting portions 20 engage andassist in retaining the skein.
The skein is now in condition for packing or transportation, either exposed or in shallow boxes.
When it is desired to convey the line to the rod reel the lease bands are cut and an end 26 of the line is attached to the latter, which is rotated to effect the transfer of the line from one reel to the other. During this transfer the carrying reel is rotatably supported upon a pencil 28 or other convenient shaft extending loosely through the bearing 9 and in the grasp of one of the operators hands. The direction of the pencil may be vertical, horizontal, or inclined.
A vertical slot 40 extending from the top of the partition 12 is employed only in connection with the transfer of thefline from the pole to the carrying reel. In which case the second end 42 of the line is initially slid into thc slotv 40 and there retained by a terminal knot 44 while the carrying reel is being rotated by the unoccupied hand of the operator by the pressure of a finger against the side vof one of the webs.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the inventionv or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim 1. In a carrying reel for a fish line, a rotary disk, a bearing sleeve centrally disposed upon the disk, an annular marginal partition integral with the disk, Webs connecting the sleeve and partition and guide members comprising shanks upon the tops of the Webs, lateral flanges frictionally engaging the opposite sides of the Webs, and heads upon the outer ends of the shanks projecting beyond the partition.
2. In a carrying reel for a fish line, a rotary disk, a bearing sleeve centrally disposed upon the disk, an annular partition upon the disk between the sleeve and disk periphery, Webs connecting the sleeve and partition and of the same height as the partition, and guide members comprising Shanks, lateral resilient ianges upon the shanks embracing the Webs,
.and fiat heads upon the Shanks extending beyond the partition. i
3. In a carrying reel for a fish line, a rotary disk, a central bearing sleeve, a partition on the disk concentric with the sleeve provided with a vertical slot, Webs upon the disk Within the partition, and guide members comprising shanks detachably mounted upon the tops of the Webs, and flat heads upon the outer ends of the shanks extending eXteriorly of the partition.
In testimony whereof I have aiiXed my signature.
JULIAN T. CRANDALL.
