(Cl. 20G-51) 3 Claims.1 1
This invention relates toa packaging reel,A and more particularly to a packaging reel of the type ldisclosed in my -earlier Patent No. 2,368,594 dated January 30, 1945.
In that patent` I disclose a reel having a cen.- tral box-like member about `which the ribbon is wound. Upon completion of the winding of the ribbon, flanges may be applied to the central boxlike member, thereby completing the packaging of the ribbon. While the invention of my patent `has enjoyed considerable success, I have `found that it is desirable to form the packaging reel from a single blank, thereby avoiding the flange assembly operation of my patent. However, it has heretofore not been possible `to form the flanges integrally with` the ribbon supporting portion and extending beyond the ribbon at every point of the periphery of the resulting reel to protect the ribbon.
Itis the object of the present invention to contribute to the art a packaging reel that may be assembled from a single blank, the assembly to be inexpensive, and to contribute a nal completely flanged package that will be attractive and durable.
It is a further object of my invention toiprovide a packaging reel having portions for securing the end of the ribbon thereto at the beginning of a packaging operation, whereby to `facilitate the winding of the ribbon on the reel.
I have thus outlined rather broadly the more important features of my invention in order that the detailed description thereof that follows may be better understood, and in order that my contribution to the art may be better appreciated. There are, of course, additional features of my invention that will be described hereinafter and which will form the subject of the claims appended hereto. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception on which my disclosure is based may readily be utilized by those skilled in the art as a basis for the designing of other structures for carrying out the several purposes of my invention. It is important, therefore, that the claims to be granted me shall be of suiiicient breadth to prevent the appropriation of my invention by those skilled in the art.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view `of my packaging reel completely assembled. Fig. 2 is a side View of the completed reel while Fig. 3 is a view looking downwardly on the end of the reel of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows the single blank from which my packaging reel of Fig. 1 is formed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and especially Figs. 1 and 4, the blank from which my reel `is formed is designated generally by the reference letter R. This blank comprises a finishing flange I0 and a finishing iiange II, each cut out at l2 for winding pins used to rotate the reel whereby to wind the ribbon thereone, all as is well set forth in my earlier patent.
The finishing flanges Ill and II are connected by what I term a ribbon supporting portion I3.
`This ribbon supporting portion I3 is formed with a central part I4 and margins I5 and I6 toV which adhesive material may be applied. Score lines are formed at I1 and I8 to facilitate the bending of the margins I5 and t5,- relatively to the central part I4.. Additional score` lines I9 are formed to provide; bending lines for tabs 20, these tabs being cut away from the margins I5 and IIv along lines 2l.
` Secured to the nishing flange II is a second ribbon supporting member 25 having a central portion 26 and margins 21 and 28, the margin 28 being directly secured to the nishing flange Il. Margins 21 and 28 are adapted for covering with adhesive material in the same manner asr margins L5. and I6. As is the case. with ribbon support I3, the central part 26 is separated from the margins 2,1 and 28by score lines 29 and 30. Simiribbon supporting portions 25. along lines 32 and by scoring, along lines 33, The ribbon support 25, as a whole, is adapted for bending relatively to the finishing flange II along score line 34. Similarly, the first ribbon support portion I3 may be bent relatively to the nishing flanges I0, II by the scoring along lines 35 and 36.
In order to form the complete ribbon packaging reel of Fig. 1, blank R must be bent along the score lines described so that margin I6 will be caused to adhere to iinishing flange I 0 with the central part I4 of the ribbon support I3 extending at right angles from the iinishing ange I0. The margin I5 of ribbon support I3 Will then be secured by adhesive to the finishing flange II with the said finishing fiange Il lying parallel to the finishing flange Ill. Margin 2B will then be secured adhesively to finishing flange I I while the reel will be completed by the securing of margin 21 to the finishing flange I0. Tabs 20 and 3| will then be bent inwardly as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to provide supports for the ribbon, the ribbon being wound to lie on the said tabs and on the central portions I4 and 26 of the ribbon supports I3 and 25.
At this point it will be well to point out the fact that the finishing flanges overlie the ribbon the reference numeral 40. It is very simple to place a ribbon against one of the parts I4, 25 and force the end of the ribbon through the Y slit 40 so that it may be maintained yieldingly thereafter during the winding operation. Those skilled in the art will fully understand this por-` tion of my invention. It is thought that .the considerable utility and extremely desirable features of my invention will now be quite apparent. ,Y
1I now claim:
