DANIEL M. FISHER AND SAMUEL E. WARREN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BQARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,618, dated April 17,1877; application filed October 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL M. FISHER and SAMUEL E. WARREN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash Boards, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of our invention is to for-man attachment or protector for wash-boards which will do away with great inconveniences now experienced in the use of the ordinary washboard. Some of the wash-boards now in use allow the water and soap to dash up from the wash-tub andwash-board onto the person washin g, thus wetting and destroying the clothes of the person washing, and endangering health. By the use of our protector these inconveniences are removed. Our improvement is cheap and readily attached to any washboard.
in the drawing, Figure 1 shows a front View of our wash-board protector in position on the wash board. Fig. 2 represents a crosssection of same. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the protector detached from the washboard. Fig. 4 is an end view of the protector detached.
Our improvement consists of a concaveshaped piece, B, of wood, metal, or other suitable material. The front of this piece B, at
4 its lower side, is provided with a flange, 0,
made of one piece with the protector B, or separately, as preferred. This flange O fits over the edge of the wash-board A, and thus helps to keep the protector B secured to the wash-board A, and, at the same time, prevents any water from the wash-tub passing between the protector B and wash-board A on the person washing. At the back of the protector B is a projection or plate, D, made of one piece with the same, or separately, as preferred. This projection or plate D is made to rest on the top of the wash-board. The back of the protector B is also provided with a staple, a, to which staple a is attached a rope or chain, 12, and pin d. The pin (1 passes through a hole in the plate D into a corresponding hole in the top of the wash-board A, and thus the protector B is held firmly in position on the wash-board A.
The protector B may be secured to the washboard A by screws or by any other suitable means. The protector B may also be made without the flange U or plate D, and permanently secured to or made a part of the washboard A. Our protector B can be made of any suitable material, but we prefer to use galvanized. iron, or block-tin, as these materials are cheap and durable, and our protector can be readily made from them.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wash-board protector B, for the uses and purposes mentioned.
- 2. The wash-board protector B, provided with flange G and plate D.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 17th day of October, 1876.
DANIEL M. FISHER. SAML. E. WARREN.
