Description
Jan. 31, 1933. I o. AMARU RESURFACING TOOL FOR BUTCHERS BLOCKS Filed Aug. 8, 19:51
Inventor OQ/iZ/O HMAPU q By I flllpmcy Patented. Jan. 31, 1933 OFFICE ORAZIO AMARU, F ASTORIA, NEW YORK RESURFACING TOOL FOR'BUTCHERS BLOCKS Application filed August 8,1931. Serial No. 556,015.
The present invention relates to hand tools, and more particularly it pertains to a tool for resurfacing butchers blocks.
It is well known that a butchers block in use develops unevenness on its working surface due to constant use in certain locations of the surface, and it is the practice to employ resurfacers who make a business of levelling the working surface of butchers blocks to recondition a worn block.
It is one of the objects of the present 1nvention to provide a hand tool by which the butcher, himself, may resurface the working surface of a butchers block and without necessitating the employment of special machines for accomplishing this end.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a tool by means of which the surface of a butchers block may be cleaned as well as levelled or resurfaced.
It is still a further object of the invention, so to construct a tool that any one or more of the blades thereof may be removed for the purpose of sharpening or replacement.
reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of ahand tool constructed in accordance with one form of the invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation illustrating another form of tool, and;
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of that form of tool illustrated in Figure 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the device comprises a main body portion 10 having a handle 11 and a plurality of blades 12.
The body is preferably in the form of a wooden block and is rectangular in cross sectional form and is of a length greater than its width.
The handle may be constructed of any de With the above and other objects in view,
the bottom face thereof and engage the ends of the handle 11. V d
The body 10 is formed on its bottom face with a plurality of grooves 18 and as best illustrated in Figure 2, these grooves 18 extend longitudinally of the body 10 at an angle to the longitudinal axis thereof. The blades 12 are mounted in the grooves 18. These blades 12 are formed from metal and have serrated edges 20 to provide a plurality of I spaced working teeth 21.
7 Means is provided to secure the blades in position in the grooves 18 and in the present embodiment of the invention, this means comprises a plurality of transversely extending bolts or the like 25 which pass through the body portion 10 in a plane which intersects the groove 18 and the knives are provided with openings 26 through which the bolts pass. A nut 27 is threaded on one end of each of the bolts in order that transverse pressure may be applied to retain the blades in position in the grooves 18.
In that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the tool is substantially the same as in the heretofore described form of the invention. In Figures 4 and 5, howi ever, the bottom face of the body 10 is provided with grooves 30 which extend longi- 'tudinally thereof parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body. These blades are mounted in grooves 31 and are secured in position in the grooves by means of bolts or the like 32 as in the preferred form of the invention. Thislast mentioned form has a handle 33 which is secured in position by means of screws or the like 34 which pass through the body as best illustrated in Figure 4. The blades in this modified form of the invention are designated 36 and are provided with spaced cutting teeth 37 as in the preferred form of the invention.
Thus it will be apparent that the present invention provides a tool by means of which the butcher, himself, may resurface the working surface of a butchers block without necessitating the calling in of a workman especially skilled in this particular work.
. While the invention has been herein illustrated in two of its preferred forms, it is to i be understood that it is not to be limited to the specific construction herein disclosed and that it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A device of the class described comprising an elongated rectangular block having parallel grooves in its lower surface, serrated plates placed in the grooves with their serrated edges projecting from the lower face of the block, bolts passing transversely through the lower part of the block throughthe plates for holding the plates in the grooves, a bowed handle, screws passing upwardly through the block from the lower face thereof into the ends of the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ORAZIO AMARU.
