SMOOTHING SHEET.
Application filed January 8, 1923. Serial No. 611,436.
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be 1t known that we, SIDNEY E. Esnnw and Lnwrs HARRIS, citizens of the United cloth or steel wool which are commonlyv used for this same purpose. 7 I
An important andmore specific ob ect is the provision of an abrasive sheet which is itself provided with a plurality of cutting edges which will operate to smooth any material worked on'instead of scratching it as is the action when the ordinary materials, such as sandpaper and the like are used, it being'well known that sand paper, emery cloth and the like. are ob jectionable inasmuch as grains of sand or emery which become loosened from the sheet embed themselves in the material worked on and subsequently work out and show up when the work is varnished or otherwise treated to effect finishing.
An additional object is the provision of an abrasive sheet which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efiicient in use, durable in service and a generalimprovement in the art.
-With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of the abrasive sheet,
Referring more particularly to the drawings and especially to Figures 1 and 2, we have shown the abrasive sheet as being formed fromany suitable size sheet 10 of steel of any preferred gage. This sheet greatly enlarged section is provided with a file like surface ateither or both sides. In actual practice this rough surface may be formed by scratching orscoring the sheet, preferably diagonally asshown at 11, after which the sheet is tempered to give it the requisite hardness. These scratches or scores provide a plurality of continuous cutting edges indicated inf greater detail at 12 in Figure 2, this view being a greatly magnified section through a portion of the shee i In Figures 3 and 4 the sheet is shown as being of a reticulated nature, that is it is out or stamped with a plurality of openings or holes 13 of any desiredsiz'e and shape arranged preferably in diagonal rows and hav ing their edges formed with burrs I more clearly indicated at 14 in Figure 4: which is a magnifiedsectionthrough this secondtype of-sheet.
In the use of either form of the inventionthe material to be smoothed is rubbed with the abrasive sheet in the same manner as sand paper or emery cloth is used, except that it is intended that the movement be fully reciprocatory and not acircular orscoring movement, though of course this might be resorted to if found advisable. The
great advantage in the use of either type of sheet is that it acts in the nature of a plane and removes minute shavings instead of scratching the surface as is the result when the ordinary sandpaper sheet is used. As
the abrasive sheets are tempered, they will- :naturally be brittle so that'they may be easily broken into any desired-size depending upon the nature of the work to be done.
While we have shown and describedthe preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course tobe understood that we reserve the right to makeisuch changes in the form, construction and. arrangement of parts, as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoinedclaim.
We claim: 1 An abrasive sheet of slightly flexible metal but of a suficiently brittle nature to permit being formed on one face with a roughened surface.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures. I
SIDNEY E. EsKnw. LEWIS HARRIS.
