Description

- Jan. 24, 1933. c. A. BEARD ATTACHMENT FOR GOLF BAGS OR THE LIKE Filed April 23, 1950 UZaucieAbeaifggg HIS ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 24, 1933 CLAUDE A. BEARD, oncnrcaco, I LLnvoIs- I l I arracnmmrr ron GoIii BAGS on m f Application filed April 23,
This invention relates to certainnovel improvements in attachments for golf bags or the like and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture. I 7
Among the several objects of the invention is to provide an attachment for a golf bag or the like which may be conveniently atm tached to the neck portion of a golf bag. so
as to provide a suitable support for the bag and golf clubs therein thereby eliminating the necessity of employing a person to carry the golf bag and clubs while the player is in'the act of playing golf.
A still further object of the invention is the novel arrangement employed for moving certain parts which constitute supporting members for the golf bag into and from o supporting position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will'be bestunderstood by reference to the accompanying drawing,
showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective vlew ofthe lnven- 30 tion Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the invention; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side View of the invention. Y I
Referring now particularly to the drawing, a golf bag is indicated at and this golf bag includes a base portion 11 and a neck portion 12. The golf bag 10 is usually carried by means of a shoulder strap 13 and 0 includes a handle 14 which facilitates picking the bag up and carrying the same when the shoulder strap 13 is not employed for the purpose.
With a golf bag of this character or of a similar character I detachably associate my invention, the object of which being to support a golf bag at a proper inclination to afford access to the golf clubs confined therein.
To accomplish this and other objects of the invention I provide a collar or yoke 15 i ase; Serial 36.146362.
formed substantially semicircular in plan view and shaped to conform to the-shape of the neck 12. This yoke 15'is detachably' connected to theneck l2 by means of a strap-16 including a buckle structure 17 The ends of the strap 16 are inserted through slots 18 and, then folded upon themselves and secured together in any suitablejmanner such as bymeans of rivets 19; I "The yoke 15 includes-"oppositely disposed depending lugs 20 having formed thereon lateral ears 21which provide stops for pu'rv poses hereinafter set forth. i y The supporting legs are indicated at 22 and if desired these legs may be formed from asingle length ofmaterial bent at'its'inter mediate portion 'to provide a "substantially semicircular loop 23 shaped to conform to the Y shape of the yoke '15. If desired fh'owever this loop 23 may be provided by the'ends of separate lengthsof material providing the legs 22 and secured t ogetherbymeansfiofa finger plate 24 and nut carryingbolt-s 25. .The supporting legs are pivotally connected to the-yoke 15 by means of suitable pintles 26 and positioned about these pintles 26 are the intermediate portions 27 of spring members 28, which intermediate portions are formed to provide coils embracing the pintles 26. Corresponding end portions of the spring 28 are hooked upon the yoke 15 and the opposite corresponding end portions are looped about the legs 22 whereby the action of the spring members will tend to move the leg members into parallel relation with the bag 10 when the same is manually removed from an inclined position.
To pivot the leg members 22 into supporting position whereby to support the bag 10 at an inclination the thumb or finger is pressed against the plate 24: and by applying pressure against this plate the'leg members will be caused to pivot from parallel relation with the bag 10 into-a position to support the bag 10 at an inclination as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
If, however, it should be desired the weight of the leg members 22 may be such as will" cause these leg members to pivot away from the bag against the action of the springs when the bag is positioned at an inclination as shown in Fig. 1.
From the description herein it will be seen that I'have provided an attachment for supporting, a, golf bag when not being carried about which is simple to operate and which will be highly eflicient in use fortheopurpose. V
1 v P WhileI have illustrated and describedthe preferred form of construction for carryin I my invention into efi'ect, this is capable o variation and modificati0n-,' withoutdepart ing from the spirit of the invention, I, therefore, do not wish to be limitedtothe precise details of constructioniset.forth, but desire I to availsmyself of such variations and modificationsasj come within thescope of the apip c im. a e. Y
. Having thus describedmy invention what I claim as new and desire to protect :by Let- 2 ters Patent isi 'An attachment for a golf bag or the like including'af substantially semi-circular yolk having-depending wing portions, a member including a buckle structure for detachably a connecting said yolk to the;neck of said golf bag or the like, a-pa-i-rof leg members having upper end .portions-curvedto embrace said 7 yolk, means for pivotallyconnecting said leg members to said yolk, spring'means for urging said leg membersto pivot in one direcr -tion-,,means provided by said wing portions to limitmovementaof said leg members in said one" direction, and thumb engageable means for connecting the said end portions of the leg members together-and for moving said leg members in an opposite direction when thumb pressure is applied to said last mentioned means. v
i .In testimony whereof I aifix my signature. CLAUDE ALBEARD.
