Description
Jan. 24, 1 933. a. E. PICKETT PROTECTOR FQR SURGICAL OPERATIONS Filed Oct. 24, 1931 ,ZiEP-icieZZ Patented Jan. 24, 1933 UNITED STATES BRITTON E. PICKETT OF CABRIZO SI RING S, TEXAS rno'rno'ron ron SURGICAL OPERATIONS,
Application filed October 24, 1931. 1 serial No. stasis;
The general object of this invention is to provide a protector of such character that it 10 may be readily applied and readily removed,
which will be loose and comfortable, and particularly which will protect or shield all portions of the body below the waist without in any way interfering with proper surgical 15 treatment or examination.
A further object is to provide a protector of this character which is in the form of a square or diaper, which may be readily washed and rendered hygienic.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figurel is a plan View of my protector;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the protector folded as it will .be in position 011 the body of a patient.
Referring to the drawing, particularly Figure 1, it will be seen that this improved 3O protector roughly has the form of a hexagon or six-sided sheet, this sheet being designated generally 10. This sheet may be made of muslin, cotton, linen or any other suitable material. The opposite straight edges 11 35 and 12 of this sheet are provided at the ends of the straight edges with the tapes 13 designed to be tied at opposite sides of the waist. posed, as shown in Figure 2, so as to provide 40 a portion A disposed at the rear of the body and a portion B disposed over the front of the body. On the two edges of the protector which extend down from the upper edge 11 as shown in Figure 2 so that the portion B is over the front of the abdomen and the portion A over the rear of the abdomen, two leg When so tied, the protector is dis-- openings C will .be provided on each sideand the tapes 15 will be engaged with the tapes '14 over'the legs of the patient in the manner shown in Figure 2. V i V At approximately the middle of the sheet 10 la relatively large opening 16 is formed which constitutes an observation and operatmg opening, this opening being o f lany suit able size and large enough to permitfree access to the parts. This opening is so dis- .99 posed that when the protectoris "foldedas shown in Figure 2,. the greater portion of the opening will be in the portion B and a relatively small. portion ofthe opening will extend upward on-the portion A.
While I do not wish to be limited to this, preferably. the middle portion of the sheet I fromthe edge 11 to the edge 12 will be formed of one strip or width of fabric 17 stitched to the side pieces 18 by stitching 19. Ob- 1. viously I do not wish to be-limited to this construction except as defined in the appended claims. The edges of this sheet are hemmed and the edge of the opening 16is hemmed.
It will be seen that this device provides a relatively loose covering for the lower portion of the patients body except as to the parts under observation or treatment and that it is very easy to put on or take off, it is :39 loose and comfortable and permits free movement of the patients-legs in any direction and that if necessary it is an easy matter to detach the tapes on one side or the other of the sheet so as to uncover the patients body and that it permits the ready insertion of the physicianshands through the openings on each side of the legs, if necessary.
I claim 1. A protector for use in abdominal operations of the character described, consisting of a hexagonal sheet of fabric adapted to be folded transversely beneath the crotch of a patient, thev forward and rear edges of the; sheet being shorter than the lateral edges of 19 the sheet, the lateral portions of the sheet being approximately triangular, the sheet being formed with an approximately central observation and operating opening and having tapes at its corners whereby when folded it may be attached around the Waist of a patient, the sheet when folded transversely providing laterally disposed leg openings and the lateral edges of the sheet having coacting tapes adapted to extend over the' leg openings, the sheet being formed of a medial breadth of fabric extending from one end of the sheet to the other and of two lateral pieces of fabric stitched to the first 7 10 named breadth.
2. A protector for'usein abdominal opera-- tions of the character described, consisting of V a hexagonal sheet of fabric adapted to be folded transversely beneath the crotch of a patient, the forward and rear edges of the sheet being shorter than the lateral edges of thesheet, the lateral portions ofthe sheet being approximately triangular, the sheet being formed With an approximately central observation and operating opening and havingtapes at its corners whereby when folded it may be attached around the Waist of a patient, the sheet when folded transversely providinglaterally disposed legopenings and the lateral edges of the sheethaving coacting tapes adapted to extend over the leg openings. 7
