UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE L. KINGSLEY AND WILLIAM P. PACKARD, OF RAOINE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKBOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189.473, dated April 10, 1877; application filed To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HORACE L. KINGS- LEY and WM. P. PACKARD, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable. Improvement in Blackboards; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a repreientation of a perspective view of our blackboard, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention relates to blackboards; and
it consists in the construction, combination,
and arrangement hereinafter particularly set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a blackboard, and B B designate two rearwardly inclined standards, to which said blackboard is rigidly attached. 0 O designate two rear braces, which complete the supporting-frame, formingwith said standards an inverted V in end View. On the front of said standards are formed two lugs or brackets, b 12, upon which lugs rests the said blackboard A. At the bottom of said blackboard is formed a chalk tray or trough, A of even length therewith, and provided with a facing or front piece, a. Above said blackboard is formed a head-piece, A attached to the upper edge of the blackboard, and inclined rearwardly from it, and in front of the base of said head-piece is a ridge or flange, a In the groove 0!? between said head-piece and said December 23. 1876.
ridge a copy-card may be placed, presenting figures or letters which are to be imitated by pupils upon said blackboard A. By inclining rearwardly the head-piece A from the face of the board, a similar inclination is given to the copy-card, whereby it is more securely held in the groove a in adjusting the inclination of the blackboard. Said card, though securely retained in position, may be reversed at will, or another may be substituted therefor.
The standards B B and G G are pivotally attached together, the upper ends of the former extendingabove and behind the points of attachment. This pivotal arrangement enables the said blackboard A to be inclined at any angle that may be preferred.
What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The blackboard A, provided with the flange a and head-piece A rearwardly inclined from the face of said blackboard, substantially as described. and for the purpose set forth.
2. The blackboard A, provided with the flange a rearwardly-inclined head-piece A standards B, and chalk-trough a, in combina tion with the pivoted supports 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above We have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses. W
HORACE L. KINGSLEY. WILLIAM P. PACKARD. Witnesses:
