In the construction of reinforced concrete roads 'and the like, it has been :Eoimd necessery to provide metallic center strips which are usually supported in-position by means of retaining pins or stakes and have dowel bars which project through "apertures in the center strip and have the ends thereof "sup ported by means of dowel bar supporting pins.
Heretofore, dowel bars have'u'sually been constructed of solid rods or bars which require the ends thereof to be supported by means of separate supporting pins or stakes which are driven into the sub-grade to per in'it the ends of the dowel bars to be projected through apertures in the pins. To eliminate the use of solid metal dowel bars and the requirement of separate dowel bar support tion, constructed of grooved or channeled an improved dowel bar device of channeled metallic material to provide a dovvel bar device adapted to be constructed of light,
weight material and grooved or channeled to increase the surface area thereofto' provide a greater contact surface With the concrete and furthermore adapted toreceive quantities of thejconcrete embedded in the grooves or ehannelsthereof to provide a rigid reinforcement for the concrete body section of the road as Well as a suitable support for a road center strip,- said dowel bar devices adapted to be used in overlapping or interfit-tirigpairs arranged to havethe interfitting ends disposed to project through a center strip opening to afford a double or increasedthickness of dowel bar material at the point of intersection of the dowel bars with the center strip.-

The grooved middle section 4 of the center strip is also provided with an opening'or aperture 10 which is located inthe middle or angled portion of the intermediatesection 4L and is, provided for the reception of one or more dowel bars. 7

The dowel bar device I embodying the 7 principles of this invention is illustrated in detail in Figures 2 and 3 and comprises a channel-cross sectioned or grooved dowel bar section 11 adapted to be constructed ofa metal channel bar or of sheet metal. grooved dowel bar supporting pin or stake 12, the lower end of which is cut to provide a tapered tip or point 13 which is adapted to be driven downwardly into the sub-grade 1 a distance adapted to be limited by a pair of outwardly projecting Wing, flanges or arms 14; which are struck from the lower portions of the sides or flanges of the channelcross-sectioned dowel bar pin 12. V g H I In the use of the improved dowel hardevice, the free end of the dowel bar section 11 is adapted to be projected through the open- 'ing 10 of the middle section 4 of the center strip, and the'dowel bar supporting pin is adapted to have the point or tip 13 thereof driven into the sub-grade 1 until the stop flangesor arms l'seat against the top surface of the subgrade, as illustrated in Figure 1.. A second dowel bar device is-used on the opposite side ofthe center strip, and the free end of the dowel bar section 11 of thesecon d device is adapted to be slightly pinched as indicated at 15., to restrict-or compressithe end of the dowel bar section so that the same may be frictionally engaged or pushed into the free end of the opposite dowel bar device. The dowel bar'supporting pin of the second device may then be driven downwardly into the sub-grade similar to the positione ing of the dowel bar device supporting pin 1 shown in full linesin Figure 1. This arrangement of thetwo interfittingdowel bar sections 11 provides a double thickness of metal at the points where the dowel bar sections project through the aperture 10 of a center strip, thus producing a reinforced dowel bar construction where "additional strength is most needed, since it is at the intersection of dowel bars with center strips that'wea knesses develop due to corrosion of i the dowel bar metal. 7
If preferred, the improved dowel bar de vices, instead of being usedin interfitting pairs as illustrated and described in connecs tion with the showing in" Figure l of the drawing, may be used in staggered relation on opposite sides'of thece'nter strip with the a respective free ends" of the dowel bar sections form a dowel bar supporting pin, the lowerendof which is adapted to be tapered-and have a plurality of wings or flangesstruck therefrom to correspond with the flanges 714 of; the dowel bar supporting pin 12,. illus, trated' in Figures '2 and- 3.": The improved dowel bar device is adapted to be constructed of grooved or channel material, or may be constructed from blanks or forms struck from sheet metal, said forms adapted to be eventually bent into the shape corresponding to that illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing. In cases where the channel dowel bars are used individually, one end of the channel section 16 or 11, as the case may be, may be of increased thickness, which may be produced by doubling the material on itself to provide a strengthened end section 17 It will, of course, be understood that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and it is, therefore, not purposed to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.
530 I claim as my invention:
1. A dowel bar device comprising a dowel bar section, a dowel bar supporting pin integrally supported on one end thereof, and stops formed on said pin.
2. A dowel bar device comprising a channel dowel bar section, a tapered dowel bar supporting pin secured on one end thereof, and stop flanges integrally struck from said pin to afford stops for limiting the insertion 80 of the pin into a road sub-grade.
3. A dowel bar device comprising a grooved dowel bar section, a grooved supporting pin therefor integrally formed on one end of said section, and means integrally formed on said supporting pin for limiting the insertion thereof into a road sub-grade.
4. A dowel bar device comprising a dowel bar section having one end thereof deflected to provide a supporting pin, and means integrally formed on the supporting pin to afford stops for limiting the insertion of the pin into a road sub-grade.
5. A dowel bar device comprising a pair of interfitting sections. affording a double l-v thickness of material, means connected with the ends of said sections to support the same in position, and stop members formed on said means.
6. A dowel bar device comprising a chan- 00 nel section having one end of increased thickness of material, and means connected with the other end for supporting the dowel bar device in position, said means having a portion thereof shaped for limiting the insertion thereof into a road sub-grade.
