Description

Jan. 10, 1933. PARSONS BOOK Filed Dec. 4. 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet INVENTOR Patented Jan. 10 1933 UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE DONALD H. PARSONS, OF NOROTON, GONNECTIGUT, ASSIGNOR T0 MCCALL COMYEANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORTPORAIION OF NEW YORK BOCK Application flled December 4, 1931. Serial N0. 578,926.
This invention relates t0 the manufacture 0f books, and particularly to the manufacture Qf magazines or periodicals.
Magazines and periodicals are customarily bound either with a saddle wire stit-ch, a side Wire stitch 01 a thread stitch depending upon the number of pages which it is desired t0 include in a single issue. A11*0f the pages 0f a single issue are customarily bound together in a single volume, of course.
According to the present invention, I propose to divide the subject matter of any given issue of a periodical into a plurality cf sections, which sections I propose t0 bind separately, preferably with a c0ver jf0r each, and then to secure the separate sect1ons together in such manner that the cover page of any given section may be exposed as the cover page 0f the combined b0ok, accorchng as the preferance of the reader may chctate.
As a spe(zific example, the subject matter cf womens magazines may be divided easily 1nto three classes, first matters of general interest, such as stories, 130etry, editorials and the 11ke, second, matters relating t0 home making, such as cooking, decorating, househ old economy, budgets and the like, and th1rd, fashions, including dress making, millinery and the like.
The advantages from the publishers point of view Will be obvious. Since each section of the magazine would preferably have its OWI1 Cover, the cover design may be cf a character appropriate to the subject matter cf the section, thus making for greater 111- terest and increasing the value cf the publications fr0m an advertising standPoint. From the publishers viewpoint also this invention should make the selling and securing 0f circulation materially easier with the obvious appeal to the prospective reader of having a plurality of magazinesin one.
Furthermore, the advertising may be associated with the subject matter 0f the magazineto which it is ;mcst closely related. For
enabled t0 bring that section in which he is most interested 0n top, thus making for greater ease in handling and reacling.
In addition the segregating of related editorial matter into a separate section within the magazine makes for greater editorial display with a resulting increase 0f reader interest. And further as editorial over-runs cf each section may be contained within its section there is a further increase in ease of handling and as such of reader interest.
From the publishers viewpoint as well as 0f the advertisers there is a distinct advantage in such a magazine by reason cf the increased amount 0'f preferred position, f0r instead 0f a sing]e front and back cover with a single inside freut anc1 back cover, these positions may be increased by the number cf covers for which there are sections. And from a publishers standpoint this means that a greater volume oft advertising may he carried at a greater profit as there is no necessity of facing such advertising with editorial matter which is a large item 0f publishing expense.
It is an object ofthe invention to provide a construction Which Will enable the above advantages to be realized.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will appear hereinafter.
A preferred emhodiment cf the invention the line 3-3 of Fi re 6. igure 8 is an end elevation shwing the 1i1anfliar in which the sections may be rotated around the connecting n1ember.
Referring to the drawings the book illustrated may be termed a multiple book and comprises three sections, A B and C which may be termed individual multi-leaved books und which are secured together in such manner that the position of the individual sections may be changed with respect to one another at the will 0f the reader. Each 0f the sections is preferably provided with an outside cover 1 and may consist 0f any desired number of pages 2, und the individual sections are preferably separately hinged t0 a common hinge element, preferably formed es an elongated member and of a character to lie entirely between the planes of the top und bottom faces of the multiple-book when the sections lie flat upon one another so as not to interfere with stacking and handling during shipment, 01 be inconvenient in use.
In the preferred embodin1ent illustrated, the pages of each secon are secured together by means of the ordinary saddle stitch 3 so that euch of the sections forrns a separately bound unit.
In order t0 secure the individual sections or units together, it is desimble t0 provide a central securing element, together with means for securing each cf the sections to the central element. F01 this purpos'e, in the present embodiment there are provided connecting members 4 in the form of short tubular members, placed adjacent the bound edges of the individual sections with their axes paralleling the same and the individual sections ma. be conveniently secured thereto by means 0 staples 5 which closely resemble the ordina.ry saddle stitch. As shown, these saddle-wire-like staples 5 also function to aid in retaining together the leaves of a leaf-section, folio, er signature through which they may be inserted (see Fig. 5) and may thus supplement 01 replace ordinary saddle stitches (see Fig. 6) in this connection, es indicated in Fig. 1, as weil as to provide loops for hinging the individual sections to the conunon hinge element 4.
Referring to Figure 8, it Will be seen that the individual sections may swing about the connecting members 4 in order to bring any desired section t0 the front of the assembled book. Thus in Figure 3, section A is on top, while in Figure 8 section A is being removed from the top osition to the lowermost position, thus bringing section B on top. By swinging section B in the same manner, section C may be brought to the uppermost position. As will be observed, the relative positions of the sections may be changed es frequently as may be desired by the reader, the se arate sections swinging freely on the centra connecting member without danger of damaging the paper of which the sections are formed.
It will be understood that the invention may be Variously modified und embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim es my invention:
1. A multiple book consisting of a plurality of individual multileaved books, und constructed to present any one of seid individual books es the freut section of the multiple book with said individual books lying flat on one another; said individual multileaved books being separately bound und separately hinged at their bound edges to a common hinge element; said hinge element, when said books lie flat on one another, lying entirely between the planes of the top und b0ttom faces of the multiple book; und said hinge element providing for rotation of individual books thereabout from a flat ition as the freut section of the multiple k to a flat position es the back section theveof and vice versa to present any one of said individual books as the freut or back section of said multiple book.
2. A multigle book according to claim 1 in which said inge element com rises a tubular member, of a diameter less t an the combined thickness of said individual books placed adjaeent the bound edges of said individual books, and with its axis paralleling seid bound edges, und in which said individual books are hinged theret0 by individual loops extending through said tubular member und individually secured to the bound edges of said individual books.
3. A multiple book according to claim 1 in which said hinge element comprises an elongated member, of a thickness less than the combined thickness 0f said individual books, placed adjacent the bound edges of said individual books, und with its length paralleling seid bound edges, a.hd in which said individual books are separately hinged to said member by individual loops to provide for the independent swinging thereof about said member.
4. A multiple book according to claim 1 in which said hinge element comprises a xnember of a diameter less than the combined thickness of seid individual books, placed adjaeent the bound edges cf seid individual books, and with it s axis paralleling said bound edges, and in which said individual books each comprise a leaf section, folio, o1 signature at least partially bound by a saddlewire-like staple which also hinges said individual book t0 said member provide for ics rotation thereabout as sei: forth in claim l.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 3rd day of December, 1931.
DONALD H. PARSONS.
