The present invention relates to tables, benches, shelves or similar structures, this application being a division of an application tiled b v me on June 19, 1925, Serial #38361, now Patent 1,855,273, on benches or tables. An object thereof is to. provide a novel means of securing boards or strips to a suitable support. Another object of the invention is to provide a finished connecl tion between the boards or strips and a suprt. Still anotherobject of the invent-ion is to provide a novel means of securing two strips or boards end to end to a suitable support. A further objectis to provide a 15 novel means of securing a pluralityof boards or strips in parallel relation and side by side to a suitable support. e
' To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts land combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter de#- scribed, the novel features being pointed out in theup )ended claims.
In the rawing: Y .Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a structure in which a plurality of boards arranged in parallel relation are secured end to endl with another similar set of boards to asin esu rt:
Fig. 2 ispiifection on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; 3 Fig. -3 is a fragmentary plan view of a structure inv which a single set of boards is secured to the .support by means which also provides a-finisliingV for the ends ofthe boards; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3; Fig. .'i 'is a perspective view of part of the securing means: and
Fig. n is a detail plan view of one of the sections of the finishing and securing strips 0 shown in Figs. 1 and 2. v
ln the illustrated embodiment the sup port comprises two transversely extending horizontally arranged angle irons 1 and .2 .supported at opposite ends in this instance,
. b v upright angle irons 3 and 4. The angle irons l and 2 havetwo of their flanges in the .saine plane. and the other two parallel and spaced aptlt to provide an elongated v-lot or opening I. the flanges 1 and '.2 extend .ing outwardly away from uid opening.
vtwo sets of boards, and4 in this instance, is
lIn the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2,`the boards or stri 6 extend longitudinally and are arranvsinv two sets end to end. the members o each set being parallel and spaced apart, and the endl of the two sets being spaced apart over'tbe slot or opening 5.
A com ined finishing and securing strip bridges the joints between the ends of the formed of a plurality ot` transversal extending abutting .sections 7 arranged in transversi-ly. extending alignment and having interlocking portions at their proximate endl formed b v a notch 8 in one end of one section. receiving a projection 9 on .one endof another section. The outer ends of the end sections have 'projections 10 which extend into the spaces between the angle iron pieces 3 and 4 at the ends of the angle iron pieces l and 2. v'Each .section of the finishing strip has a holding rim l1 adjacent its margin to fit in transverse grooves 12 in the upper faces of two boards or strips 6 near the ends of the boa rds in order to hohl the boards against movement away from the finishing strip. Each section of the finishing strip also has two depending abutnicnts 13 for cooperating with adjacent. ends` of two boards held by the finishing strip. said abutments depending in the space between the two boards.
For holding the finishing strip in position to prevent the separation of the two sets of boards endwise and also to clamp the boards to the support. each .section of the finishing .strip ina v vlie provided between its aliutments 13 with an opening 14 through which may be passed a bolt 15 which is anchored on an anchoring block or member. The latter has two spaced grooves ot notches lfi in its Upper face lseparated b v a projecting portion 17 which hasv decliningr opposite sides leading t0 the grooves. Thisprojecting portion extend-l in the slot between the two angle iron piecesl l und 2 while the lower edges of the upright thingcs of the angle irons are received in the grooves, so as to prevent lateral di-phneuient of the anchoring device.
ln the einhmlinicnt illustrated in Figs. 3 and l.. the support is the saine as shown in 100 Figs. 1 and 2 but onlv one set of longitudinelly extending parallel boards 6 are used. One side of the transversely extending finishing strip is identical with both sides of'the finishing stripshown in Fi s. 1 and 2. but the other side is wider am extends to the outer edge of the |horizontal flange on the angle iron piece 2. This wider side has a. marginal flange 1S which has a width substantially et ual to the, thickness of the boards or strips ti held by the other side of the finishing stri i. and may rest on tht` horizontal or upper ange of the angle iron 2 and the ends of the finishing strip interlock with the uprights.
Both forms of the invention having elongated slots or openingsI 19 in each of the seetions of the finishing strip to be employed for the passage of bolts to secure any suitable structures such as partitions or grille work. n
