ADAMS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK BENCH R TABLE Application filed June 19, 1925, Serial The present invention relates to benches or tables and more particularly to the type 111 which a bench or table is constructed in sectional form so that the length of the bench may be made to accommodate any desired number of workmen. An object of this invention is to provide a side frame which may be made from angle iron pieces to provide a strong and durable structure. A further object of the invention is to provide a side frame which permits the ready connection thereto of top pieces, foot pieces, brackets and other appliances without the necessity of boring such frame. Still another object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable means of securing top pieces or other connecting pieces to the side frames. A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means of securing a finishing strip to a side frame beyond the end of the top of the bench or table.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appendedclaims.

Each of the side frames in the illustrated embodiment employs two uprights and two horizontal connecting means, one of the latter above the other. Each upright, in this instance, embodies two angle iron pieces, each of which has a portion 1 parallel with the portion 1 of the other piece and a portion 2 in a plane with the portion 2 of the other piece, the edges of the portions 2 of the two or groove 3 and said portions 2 forming the outer face of the upright. These angle iron pieces are connected together at intervals by tie pieces 4; in the form of cast blocks which have a hollow and substantially rectangular form with perforated end walls 5 through which bolts 6 pass to secure the tie pieces or blocks to the angle irons of the uprights. These rectangular pieces also have notches or recesses 7 opposite the slots or openings 3 in the outer faces of the uprights for a purpose which will be hereinafter set forth.
The upper horizontal connecting means embodies, in this instance, also two angle irons, each of which has a flange 8 vertically arranged and parallel with the flange 8 of the other, said flanges 8 being secured to the flanges 1 of the uprights, preferably by the bolts 6 which serve for securing the two angle irons of the uprights to the tie blocks The other flanges 9 of the upper horizontal connecting means are horizontally arranger in the same plane and also preferablyin the plane of the upper ends of the uprights. The upper horizontal connecting means may end at the uprights as shown in the left hand side of Fig. 3 or may project beyond such uprights as shown in the right hand side of Fig. 3.
T o the end of preventing any pivoting action of the angle irons, forming the horizontal connecting means, on the angle irons forming the uprights 1, each upright is provided near its upper ends with two bosses 10, each, in this instance, formed by slitting the flange 1 at 11 and then pressing the metal to one side of the slit outwardly, so that one edge of the slit forms a shoulder. The two slits are in horizontal alignment, so that two shoulders are formed engaging the lower edge of the flanges 8. Each flange 8 is also provided with two bosses 10 for engaging the flange edge of the flange 1 and if the angle iron pieces forming the upper horizontal means are extendedbeyond an upright, as illustrated in Fig. 3, then the flanges 8 may be provided with another pair of bosses or projections 10 for engaging the face of the flange 2. It is apparent that the two angle irons being spaced apart provide an upper connecting means with a longitudinally extending and horizontally arranged opening or slot, the uses of which will be hereinafter set forth.
The lower horizontal connecting means of each side frame may also embody two angle irons, each of which has a vertical flange 12 parallel with the vertical flange of the other and secured to the outer face of the flanges 1 preferably by the bolts 6 which secure the tie pieces or blocks 4 to the upright angle irons. The flanges 13 of the angle irons forming the lower horizontal connecting means lie horizontally in the same plane and project outwardly from the sides of the flanges 1. The flanges 1 are provided with bosses or projections 10 for engagement with the lower edges of the flanges 12 and for engaging the upper surfaces of the flanges 13, while the bosses or projections 10 are formed on the inner faces of the flanges 12 to engage the edges of the flanges 1, thereby preventing the twisting or turning of the angle irons or the lower horizontal connecting means on the bolts 6. It will thus be seen that side frames are provided which have the outer faces of the uprights provided with vertical slots or openings extending from the top to the bottom of each upright. The upper horizontal connecting means also has a slot or opening extending from end to end and a slot or opening is formed in the lower horizontal connecting means between the uprights.
Each upright may have at its lower end a foot piece, see Fig. 7, comprising, in this instance, a base portion 14: with a shoulder 15 and a reduced portion 16 projecting upwardly from said shoulder. This reduced portion is formed to fit in engagement with the inner faces of the flanges 2 and the inner faces of the flanges 1, the lower ends of the angle irons forming the uprights resting on the shoulder 15. A bolt opening 17 is provided in the reduced portion 16 and at this bolt opening, a bolt 18 is received. This bolt passes through the slot 3 formed in the outer faces of the upright and connects with a clamping member 19 in the form of a plate having laterally turned ends 20, the plate engaging the outer faces of the flanges 2 and the laterally turned ends extending onto the outer faces of the flanges 1 to hold the clamping plate against turning. It is apparent that the tightening of the bolt draws the clamping member 19 against the outer faces of the flanges 2 and the outer end of such clamping member against the inner faces of the flanges 2, thereby holding the foot piece in place.
Any number of side frames may be employed to make a bench or table, the number depending upon the length of the table desired, as well as the weight to be supported thereon. In Fig. 1, a bench or table is shown where four side frames are employed connected by a top piece 21. The lengths of the top pieces are such that the ends of the top sections lie at the middle of the two end frames, so that another top section 21 may be arranged end to end with the top sections to provide a longer bench or table, or, as when the end of a top section 21 is to form the end of the bench or table, a finishing strip 22 may be secured to the side frame.
The main top pieces 21 may be secured to the side frames in any suitable manner. hen two top pieces are secured end to end, each main top piece at each end may have a number of castings 23 secured thereto by screws 24-, each casting having a projection 25 on one side thereof received in notches 26 formed in the adjacent edge of the top piece 21 and serving by engagement with one wall of this recess or notch 26 to position the casting 23. This casting 23 also has a shoulder or surface 27 presented toward the underside of the top piece 21. It further may have a camming surface 27 on the side thereof opposite the shoulder 26. Each casting also has a surface 28 forming a shoulder. These castings or securing lugs 23 lie, when the ends of two top sections abut, over the slot in an upper cross piece within such slot or surface 28 and abutting the inner faces of the flanges 8. In order to hold these two ends of the top secby a number of slats 43.
tions'in abutting relation and on the upper horizontal member of the side frame, there may be provided clamping pieces 29, each formed with a central opening and two lugs 31 on opposite sides of the central opening and two ribs 32 beyond the lugs. The upper surface of the clamping piece between a lug 31 and a rib 32 engages the underside of a flange 8, while the inner bevelled faces of the lugs 31 cooperate with the inner bevelled faces 27 of the castings or securing lugs 23. A bolt 33 passes through the bolt opening 39 and upwardly between the securing lugs, its upper end being engaged by a nut 34 which rests on the shoulders 27 of two of the lugs or project-ions 23. Furthermore, the ends of the section are drawn tightly in abutment through the camming faces of the lugs 31 engaging the cam faces 27 on the lugs or casting For fastening the finishing strip 22 in abut ment with the top section 21, the casting 23 may have a lug 36 projecting laterally therefrom and secured in a recess or pocket 37 by a screw 38 passed through the opening 39. This pocket permits-the underface of the lug to lie flush with the underface of the finish ing strip 22. This lug or projection 36 has at its outer portion, an overhanging retaining lug 40 which is adapted to engage under the free edge of the outermost flange 9 at the top of the side frame, as illustrated in Fig. 4. It will be seen that by tightening the bolt 33, the clamping member 29 will have its bevelled lugs 31 drawn into tight engagement with the bevelled surface 28 on the lugs carried by the finishing piece and the top piece, thus drawing the finishing piece and top piece toward each other into firm abutment.
Furthermore, the lug 40 is drawn firmly on the underside of the flange 9.
The lower horizontal connecting means of the side frames may form a supporting means for a lower shelf, formed, in this instance, These slats are spaced apart at 44 and are secured firmly t0 the lower horizontal connecting means of the side frame. Between the ends of the benches, these slats 43 rest upon the flanges 13 and the 3 adjacent ends of the two slats are held by a securing member 45 which is formed on its underside along the opposite edges with the ribs 46 entering into the grooves 47 in the adjacent ends of the two slats. The under- 15 side of the securing plate 45 has also two ribs 53 which form abutments for the ends of the two slats 43. Most of these securing plates have each end formed with a wide projection 43, the Width being equal substantially to the 1? distance between the inner or opposite faces of the flanges 1 and the uprights, so that said projections 48 will lie between said flanges and hold the plate against lateral shifting. The other end of such plate is notch-ed at 49 and this notch is formed so as to receive a projection 48 on another plate which secures two other slats 43, the plate 45 projecting preferably from one side of the two slats to which it is secured in order to space the adjacent two slats therefrom. In this instance, two of such plates are employed, one at the rear upright and the other at the front upright in reversed positions. An intermediate plate 45 is provided like the plates 45 except that it has projections 48 at opposite ends and no notches 49. The plates 45 and 45 are each anchored by a bolt 50 to a clamping member 51 which has seats 52 thereon for engagement with the undersides of the flanges 12, as indicated in Fig. 14. In this instance, the bolt 50 tends to hold the plate 45 and the clamping member together with the slats 43 firmly held on the flanges 13 of the horizontal lower connecting means of the side frame. The clamping member 51 is shown in perspective in Fig. 18.
For those slats whose ends rest upon the outermost side frames of the bench, a securing means is provided which also acts as a finishing means for such end. This combined finishing and securing means, in this instance, comprises plates 45 which are identical with the plates 45, except that the rib 46 on one side of each plate is eliminated and in place thereof an extension 46'? is employed which increases the width of the plate 45 sufliciently to cover the flange 13, the outer edge of this extension being turned downwardly at 46 to rest upon said flange and said projection being extended at one end at 46 be yond the end of the plate 45 so as to be flush with the face 2 of an adjacent angle iron of the upright. The other end of the extension 46 is in spaced relation to the opposite end of the plate 45 so that the end 46 of an extension 46 on an intermediate plate 45 may be received, this intermediate plate having extensions 46 at opposite ends and also two projections 48. All of these slat securing plates may have slots 145 which may be utilized for permitting bolts or other fastening devices being extended therethroughto connect with clamps such as shown in Fig. 18, for securing any suitable devices, such, for instance, as the lower edge of a gr lle 52. If desired, the lower shelf may be widened at the front or the rear, or both, by extending the lower horizontal angle irons beyond the uprights, as illustrated in Fig. 7 at 12 and connecting the projecting portions by slats 43.
In some instances, it is desirous to close the space in a side frame enclosed by the upper and the lower horizontal connection means and the uprights. This result is secured, in this instance, by a closure 52 in the form of a grille frame which conforms to the space. To secure this frame in position, its upper edge is received within the notches 53 of the clamping members 29 for the top. At its sides the grille closure is held by securing means attached to the front and the rear uprights. In this instance, these securing means each embody a plate 54 cooperating with the outer face of the uprights, see Fig.
5, and having laterally turned edges 54* engaging the sides of the upright, Through this plate passes a bolt 55 extending also between the angle irons and being secured to a yoke 55 which has two arms 55 extended therefrom and provided with hooks 55 at their ends, the arms being deflected at 55, so that they may be passed between two vertical strips 52 and 52 on the closure 52 in order to lie on one side of one and the opposite side of the other, so that the hooks 55 may engage about the strip 52 The yoke also has at the inner end of the arms two hooks 55 which are adapted to engage the strip 52 By tightening on the bolts 55 at opposite ends of the closure 52, the closure may be held in a tight condition, its upper edge being confined in the notches 53 of the clamps 29.
Foot rests may be provided on the benches. In this instance, these foot rests, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and P, at 56, are formed in sections, are arranged at an angle to the horizontal, and are supported on brackets 57 The brackets 57 are slotted at 59 at their rear ends and are secured by bolts 58 to the uprights 1. The brackets have their sides in the form of angle pieces 57 so that they may be engaged by clamping members 29 as used and illustrated in Figs. l and 9.
This clamping member 29 cooperates with castings 23 on the sections of the foot piece 56, the end sections or finishing pieces of the foot piece being held in position in the same manner as illustrated in Fig. 4;, while the intermediate sections of the foot piece are held together in the manner illustrated in Fig. 9. There is, however, this difference, the bolt 56 which connects with the anchoring piece 29 extends upwardly through the notches 56- in the proximate ends of the sections, as shown in Fig. 10, its head being counter-sunk in the foot pieces. This arrangement makes it possible to utilize the bolt 56 to prevent the shifting of the sections of the foot piece in their plane. The other parts of this connection will not be described in detail, but will have the same reference characters applied thereto as are applied to similar parts in Fig. 4. Intermediate sections of the foot piece will be secured together as shown in Fig. 9, except for the bolt 56 which will be like the bolt 56*, as shown in Fig. 4.
Work rests or supports may be provided on the upright frames of the benches. These serve to separate the workmen at the benches and, at the same time, can be utilized for supporting different materials being worked upon by the workmen. Each of these supports is in the form of an elongated strip or member 60 secured at its inner end by bolts 61 to a bracket 62, see Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which by bolts 63 are secured to an upright of a side frame, the bolts passing through the slots 3 between the flanges 2 of the angle irons.
A work bench constructed in accordance with this invention has a large amount of flexibility. It may be made of any length. The distances between the side frames may be varied to meet different conditions. The side frames are of novel construction and without the boring of any holes therein may be utilized for securing thereto a number of different parts which connect therewith. These side frames are formed of angle irons in such a manner that slots extend throughout the lengths of the uprights as well as throughout the lengths of the horizontal connecting means between the uprights. These slots are utilized for anchoring thereto the top, the lower shelf, the foot rests and sup ports projected forwardly from the upright. Novel means is employed for securing the top to the side frames and the bottom shelving to the side frames, and finishing strips are secured in a novel manner at the ends of the bench.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. side frame for tables, benches or the like comprising two uprights, one at the front and the other at the rear of the frame, each formed of two angle iron pieces, a flange on one angle iron piece of each upright being parallel with and in a plane with a flange on the other piece, the parallel flanges of the two uprights being at the front and the rear sides of the frame, each pair of angle iron pieces having its parallel flanges spaced apart to provide a slot which opens at the outer face of the upright throughout the length of the upright and which has a width sufficient to permit the passage of fastening devices therethrough and the vertical adjustment of the fastening devices in the slot, and means connecting the angle iron pieces on the inner sides of the parallel flanges, said means having a recess opposite the slot between the angle iron pieces, so as not to interfere with the adjustment of the fastening devices in the slot.
2. A side frame for tables, benches or the like comprising two uprights, one at the front and the other at the rear of the frame, each formed of two angle iron pieces, a flange on one angle iron piece of each upright being parallel with and in a plane with a flange on the other piece, the parallel flanges of the two uprights being at the front and the rear sides of the frame, each pair of angle iron pieces having its parallel flanges V spaced apart to provide a slot which opens at the outer face of the upright throughout the length of the upright and which has a width suflicient to permit the passage of fastening devices therethrough and the vertical adjustment of the fastening devices in the slot, and means connecting the angle iron pieces on the inner sides of the parallel flanges, said means having a recess opposite the slot between the angle iron pieces, so as not to interfere with the adjustment of the fastening devices in the slot, the width of the recess being greater than the width of the slot so as toexpose the rear faces of the parallel flanges adjacent such connecting means for engagement by the fastening devices. 7
3. A table or bench comprising a top, two
side frames supporting the top and provided with vertically extending slots, a foot rest, brackets supporting said foot rest from both of said side frames, and fastening means for said brackets passing through the vertically extending slots and cooperating with said uprights to hold the foot rest in different positions.
4. A table or bench comprising side frames each provided at its top with connecting means, the connecting means comprising two angle iron pieces each having one of its flanges projecting outwardly and in a hori- Zontal plane with a like flange on the other spaced apart throughout their lengths to provide slots between them, a top arranged on said connecting pieces, and fastening means for securing the top to the connecting pieces operating in the slots and engaging with the inner faces of said flanges.
5. A sectional table or bench embodying a plurality of side frames, each frame having an upper portion provided with'a slot extending horizontally transversely of the table, a sectional top connecting said side frames, each side frame supporting the ends of two of said top sections with their abutting ends positioned over the slots, and fastening means for securing the abutting ends in abutment and also securing both sections to the frame, said fastening means being arranged in the slot and engaging both sections between the side walls of the slot and also engaging the side frames.
6. A table or bench comprising side frames, each having an upper portion formed of two angle irons with horizontally extending flanges in the same plane, the horizontally extending flanges being presented outwardly and thevertical flanges being spaced apart, a top resting on said side frames, one end of the top having its edge lying over the slot between the angle iron pieces, a finishing piece having its edge in abutment with the aforementioned edge of the top over the slot, a hook carried by the underside of the finishing piece and engaging the horizontally presented flange of one of the angle iron pieces, and means arranged within the slot and cooperating with the finishing piece to hold the hook of the latter in engagement with the flange and the edge of the finishing strip in abutment with the top in the same plane therewlth, and also engaging the side frame to hold the top and the finishing strip to the side frame.
7. The combination with a plurality of side frames, each frame having a slot extending horizontally, of a sectional connecting surface between the side frames supported with the adjacent ends of two sections adjacent a slot of a side frame, and fastening means for the adjacent ends of the'two sections operating in the slot of a side frame, engaging said side frame and having means associated therewith for holding the ends of the sections in adjacent positions.
8. The combination with a plurality of side frames arranged transversely of a structure with at least one of said side frames being intermediate of the ends of said structure, of a plurality ofseparate pieces connecting each two adjacent side frames of the structure, each intermediate side frame of the structure having the adjacent ends of two sets of connecting pieces supported thereon, and sectional interlocking securing means for the ends of all connecting pieces secured to such intermediate side frames.
9. The combination with a side frame, of two sets of connecting pieces resting on the side frame with ends of the two sets adjacent each other, and plates arranged end to end transversely of the connecting pieces, interlocking at their adjacent ends and engaging the adjacent ends of the two sets of con necting pieces, and means for securing the plates to the side frame to hold the connecting pieces to the side frames.
10. The combination with a side frame, of a set of connecting pieces supported on the side frame, and securing plates arranged end to end transversely of the connecting pieces and interlocking at their adjacent ends for holding the connecting pieces to the side frame.

The combination with a side frame for tables, benches or the like comprising two uprights, one at the front and the other at the rearYof the frame, each formed of two angle iron pieces, a flange on one angle iron piece of each upright being parallel with and in a plane with a flange on the other piece, the parallel flanges of the two uprights being at the front and the rear sides ofthe frame, each pair of angle iron pieces havlng its parallel flanges spaced apart to provide a slot which opens at the outer face of the upright throughout the length of the upright,
and which has a width sufficient to permit the y passage of fastening devices therethrough and the vertical adjustment'of the fastening devices in the slot, a suitable part to be secured to the side frame, and fastemng devices secured to the part lying in the slot and engaging the inner faces of the parallel flanges.
12. The combination with a side frame for tables, benches or the like comprising two uprights, one at the front and the other at the rear of the frame, each formed of two angle iron pieces, and a flange of one angle iron piece of each upright being parallel with and in a plane with a flange on the other piece, the said parallel flanges of the two uprights being at the front and the rear side of the frame, and said parallel flanges extending toward each other and being spaced apart at their edges to provide a slot which 0 ns at the outer face of the flanges throughout the length of the flanges and connecting means between the uprights embodying two angle iron pieces, each having one of its flanges horizontally arranged and turned outwardly with reference to the horizontal flange on the other angle iron piece, the two flanges being in the same horizontal plane, and the vertical flange-s of said horizontal connecting means being secured to the outer faces of the flanges of the uprights which extend transversely of the frame to provide a slot, of a member supported by at least one of the uprights, fastening means carried by said member adjustable vertically between the angle iron pieces of the upright and engaging the inner faces of the flanges which extend toward each other, a member resting on the connecting means, and fastening means carried by said member lying in the slot between the two angle iron pieces of the uprights and engaging the lower edges of the vertically arranged flanges of the angle iron pieces.
13. A side frame for tables, benches and the like comprising two uprights one at the front and the other at the rear of the frame and each formed of two angle iron pieces of L shape in cross section, a flange of one an le iron piece of each upright being parallel with and in a plane with a flange on the other piece, the said parallel flanges of the two uprights being at the front and the rear side of the frame and extending toward each other and said parallel flanges being spaced apart at their edge to provide a slot which opens at the outer faces of the flange throughout the length of the flanges and which has a width sufficient to permit the passage of fastening devices therethrough and the vertical adjustment of the fastening devices in the slot, and the other two flanges of each upright projecting inwardly in parallel relation on the sides of each upright, the spaces between such flanges of each upright serving as channels in which the fastening means may be housed, and connecting means between the flanges comprising two angle iron pieces of L shape in cross section spaced apart and each having one of its flanges in a plane with and parallel with a like flange on the other, the
two flanges extending away from each other, the said parallel flanges being at the top of the connecting means and the two angle iron pieces being spaced to provide a slot opening upwardly throughout the length of the angle iron pieces and ofa width sufficient to receive fastening devices therein and the other two flanges of the connecting means depending to provide a channel on the under side of the connecting means in which the fastening means passed through the slot may be passed.
14. A side frame for tables, benches or the like, comprising two uprights, one at the front and the other at the rear of the frame and each formed of two angle iron pieces of L shape in cross section, a flange of one angle iron piece of each upright being parallel with and in a plane with a flange on the other piece the said parallel flanges of the two uprights being at the front and the rear side of the frame, and said parallel flanges extending toward each other and being spaced apart at their edges to provide a slot which opens at the outer face of the flanges throughout the length of the flanges and which has a width suflicient to permit the passage of fastoning devices therethrough, and the vertical adjustment of the fastening devices in the slot, and the other two flanges of each upright projecting inwardly in parallel relaw tion on the sides of each upright, the spaces between such flanges of each upright serving as channels in which the fastening means may be housed, and connecting means between the uprights embodying two angle iron pieces, each having one of its flanges horizontally arranged and turned outwardly with reference to the horizontal flange on the other angle iron piece, the two flanges being in the same horizontal plane, and the vertical flanges of said horizontal connecting means being secured to the outer faces of the flanges of the uprights which extend transversely of the frame to provide a slot.
