MITIER-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Application filed May 22, 1918. Serial No. 235,913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WELLINGTON DARoY and SoLoN H. BENBOW, citizens of the United States, residing at Jackson, county of Jackson, and Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, Michigan, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to'improvements in miter boxes.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved miter box which may be quickly knocked down and compactly arranged for transportation or storage and quickly set up or assembled.
,Second, to provide an improved knockdown miter box which when assembled is ver rigid and secure, the parts being assembled so that they possess practically the rigidity and security of a permanently assembled structure.
Third, to provide an improved knockdown miter box which maybe mounted on a saw horse or similar support, such support con stituting the bed piece for the box.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our inven tion by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanving drawing. forming a part of this specification, in which:
'Figure I is a perspective view of a struoture embodying the features of our invention mounted upon a saw horse. the top bar of the saw horse constituting the bed piece of the box.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail vertical transverse section on a line corresponding to l ne 2-2 of Figs. IV and VII.
Fig. III is an enlarged detail longitudinal section of the saw guide bar showing the ar an ement of the latch.
Fig. IV is a detail view partiallv in horizontal section on a line co responding to the br ken l ne 44 of Fig. II.
Fig. V is an enlarged detail partiallv in sect on on a line corres ondin to line 55 of Fig. II. showing details of the knock down features.
Fig. VI is a detail section through the saw guide posts on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. II.
Fig. VII is an inverted detail view of the saw guide bar and its retaining means.
Fig. VIII is a detail section showing details of the means for securing the back members on a line corresponding to line 8-8 of Fig. IV.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views aretaken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the base 1 is provided with a quadrant 2 provided with suitable gage or angle indicating indicia and with a series of holes 3 adapted to receive the latch or stop pin.
At its rear side the base is provided with upwardly projecting back supports or posts 4 having vertical slots 5 therein. The back members 6 are adapted to rest on the base in front of these uprights or posts and are provided with set screws 7 engaging the slots for detachably securing the back members to the posts.
At the front of the base and in an opposed relation to the back supports is a lug 8 carrying the clamping screw 9 which is provided with a swivel shoe 10. The bed piece 11, which may be the top bar of a saw horse or like support or a suitable wood bar of proper dimensions, such as a piece of scantling. is positioned across the base in front of the back members 6 and is clamped against the same by means of the screw 9, thus rigidly clamping the bar upon the base and also clamping the back members in position.
The base is preferablv provi ed with supporting legs 12 for u e when the box is used upon a bench or table. Bv this simple means the bed piece and hack members are ri idlv secured and at the same time the structure may be quickly knocked down wh n desired.
The saw guide bar 13 is mounted upon the pivot 14 projecti g d wnwardlv from the base as shown in Fig. II. To detachablv retain the bar this pivot is notched at 15 to be en aged bv the latch 16. which is pivotally secured to the bar by means of the set screw 17. the latch having a transverse notch 18 therein adapted to engage the post so that by t is means the bar is securely retained permitting its swinging action and at thesame time may be readily released.
At its front end the bar is provided with a latch 19 which is reciprocatingly supported in the upwardly projecting lug 20 to coact with the holes 3 of the quadrant, see Fig. I A thede s of he latch form 1 part of this invention they are not further described herein.
At its ends'the bar is .providedwith pairs of sockets 22 for the pairs of saw guide posts 21. Transverse slits 23 extend between these sockets and longitudinal slits 24- eXtend from the'ends' of the bar to these transverse slits providin clamping members 25 for the posts. (ilamping screws 26' are threaded into the ends of the bars to engage the ends of these clamping members as shown.
The post top bar 27 is provided with sockets, clamping members, and clamping screws the same as the guide bar, so that thetop bar may be detachably secured to the posts and the posts detachably secured to the guide bar, it being only necessary to manipulate. four set screws to efi'ectively secure or release these parts.
The saw guide rolls 28 are mounted upon the posts in coactin pairs, the pairs being connected by the yo es 29 engaging grooves 80 at the upper ends of the rolls.
A spring clasp 31 is provided on the top bar for supporting the saw in its elevated inoperative position. To secure lightness we preferably form the partsof our improved miter boX of aluminum and owing to the form and manner of connecting the parts they may be readily knocked down and compa'ctly arranged for transportation or storage, so that a workman may conveniently carry the same about with the usual equipment of carpenters or cabinet mak'ers tools.
As the saw horse topbar or-other-bars or pieces of wood may be used effectively as bed pieces it is not necessarytorthe-workproven very satisfactory. We have not,
illustrated or described certain structural details which we contemplate as we believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which our invention relates to embody or'adapt the same as maybe desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1, In a miter box, the combination with two posts of a bar having socket holes for the posts, a slot connectin'gthe holes and a transverse slot connecting the formerslot with a surface of the post with common screw clampingboth the parts defined by'the slots and holes upon the posts.
2. In a miter box, the combination ot a base, a pivoted saw guide bar removably mounted on said base, pairs of saw guide posts, and a top bar therefor, said saw guide bar and top bar being provide dat theirends with. pairs of sockets for said posts and being slotted to provide post clamping members, and screws coacting with said clamping members for clamping them uponsaid post.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two witnesses.
D. MILDRED SMITH, JOHN E. CRosE.
