My invention relates to improvements in tables intended for kitchen and/or dining room purposes, and the same has for its object to provide a simple, compact and attractive table which may be readily enlarged by leaf or extension members which are normally wholly concealed within or below the table top.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an extension table of simple construction in which the extension or leaf members are normally wholly housed and concealed within and by the table top, and which may be readily moved from their retracted or inoperative position to their extended or operative position in a straight line or horizontal plane parallel to the table top in its normal position.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an extens'on table in which the extension or individual leaf members arranged at opposite sides of the table when withdrawn or adjusted to operative position will have their inner edges in closeengagement with the respective edges of the main member or table top, and their upper surfaces in a horizontal plane coinciding exactlywiih that of the upper surface of the main member or table top.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an extension table in which a plurality of extension or leaf members are normally housed and concealed within and by the main member or table top, and in which the main member or table top is so constructed that the same is capable of a limited verticalmovement a-nd tilting movements transversely in order to permit of the adjustment of said extension or leaf members to operative and inoperative positions, and vice versa by merely slightly raising the edges of said main member or table top.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an extension table in which a plurality of extension or leaf members are normally housed by and within the main member or table top, and in which the latter is yieldingly or movably secured along its central, longitudinal axis to the supporting frame so as to permit the raising of its longitudinal edges whereby to withdraw first the extension or leaf member at one side of the table, and then the one at the other side of the table.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an extension table in which the hollow metal top, is braced or reinforced and protected against undue injury by extension or leaf members and their respective supports disposed within and below said hollow top.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an extension table in which the same supporting and guiding means is common to and serves to guide and support the extension or leaf members at opposite sides of the table.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front view illustrating one form of table constructed accordingto and embodying my said invention;
Fig. 2 is an under side view of the table, the legs being shown as broken away;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken at about the plane of the lines 3+3 in Fig. 1 and showing the main table top down flat and housing both leaves;
Fig. 4: is an end view showing the top tilted and the leaf on the left-hand side partly extended, the leaf on the right hand side being in its retracted and housed position;
Fig. 5 is a cross-section showing the leaf at the left fully extended, the edge of the main top dropped behind it, and the leaf at the right hand side half way out;
Fig. 6 is an end view showing both leaves fully extended, the main top in position behind them, the entire upper surfaces of the leaves and main table portion being in the same horizontal plane, and
Fig. 7 is a detail in projection of a portion of the corner of the table looking from below and showing a modified or alternative means for securing the main table top to the frame so that it may readily be tilted transversely towards each if its longitudinal edges.
The table herein illustrated has an oblong supporting frame comprising a pair of iongitudinalside members 10, a pair of end members 11, and legs 14 all of which are secured together by means of clamp plates 12 and screws 13 entering the tops of said legs 14*. This is a conventional form of construction, and does not form part of my invention aside from the fact that the frame members cooperate with elements which do enter into the invention, and the frame members are modified in certain respects to accommodate my construction.
The main member or table top 14 is pref erably formed of metal which may or may not be provided with an enamel coating according to the intended uses to which the table is to be put. in the illustration this main table top is of substantially the same form as the frame, but is preferably somewhat larger. The top is shown having a dependent flange 15 -which is preferably int-urned at its lower edge 16, and within the flange and its inturned edge is disposed a wooden frame 17 comprising longitudinal side members 17, end members 17 and a central longitudinal member 18 which is secured at its opposite ends to the inner sides of the end members 17', and serves to divide the under side of the top within the frame member 17 into two longitudinal recesses 18*, to receive the separate extension members or leaves. The frame 17, as a whole, also serves to stiffen or reinforce the metal top, and protect the same against injury which might ordinarily occur as a result of pressure or sudden impact against the upper side thereof.
The bar 18 normally rests upon the end frame members 11 at about their central portion. Each of the longitudinal sideframe members 10 is shown provided in its upper edge of its ends with a recess 19. A pair of guide rails 20 are located crosswise of the table in said recesses 19, and are secured to the frame members 10. For the purpose of steadying the main table top 14 and guiding it in its tilting movement, the rail 18 carries a pair of depending pins 21' which are loosely received in holes 22 in the guide rails 20. The holes 22, however, are sufficiently close to prevent undue movement of the table top upon the supporting frame. For limiting the lifting or the upward movement of the table top the pins 21 are shownprovided with heads 23 which are larger than the openings 22 and located in position to permit a pre-determined upward movement of the table top and the tilting thereof transversely towards each of its longitudinal edges.
The dimensions of the flange 15, rails 20, and the bar 18 are preferably such that the lower surface 24 of the inturned portion 16 of the flange 15 occupies a plane above the eeaeee plane 25 occupied by the tops of the legs 14 and the frame members 10 and 11, see Figs.
1 and 6. Each of the guide-rails 20 is provided at. each side with a tongue 26. The said tongues engage and cooperate with grooves 2? formed in slide rails 28 and 29 secured to the leaves 30, 31, respectively. Stops 32 and 33 are shown secured to the under sides of the slide rails 28 and 29, respectively, for the purpose of limiting the outward or withdrawing movement of the leaves.
The slide rails 28 and 29 are cut away inwardly of the leaves which they carry so as to present surfaces 34 at a proper distance below the upper surfaces of the leaves to accommodate the depth of the edge of the main table top when the same drops into position behind the leaf when the latter is fully extended.
Preferably the leaves are of such proportions that they will fully occupy the recesses 18 in the under side of the main table top formed between the bar 18 and the inner edges of the longitudinal frame members 17 or the flange 15. Suitable finger recesses 35 are shown formed in the under side of the front edges of the extension leaves.
The outer edges of the extension leaves are formed with curved lines so as to produce an ornamental appearance of the table when they are extended, which differs from the outline of the main table top when the leaves are retracted below and within the same.
From the foregoing it will be apparent when the leaves 30 and 31 are fully retracted and in the folded position of Figs. 1 and 3, that they are, not only as to their upward surfaces but as to their outer edges, completely concealed from View and protected from soiling or injury from the culinary operations which may be carried on upon the main table top. It will also be seen that the bar 18, the guide pins 21, the guide rails 20 and slide rails. 28 and 29 afford stable and adequate support for the table top both in the retracted or inoperative position or in a position with one leaf or both leaves extended to operative position.
Assuming that the leaves are in their normal or retracted positions shown in Figs. 1
1, 2 and 3, and it is desired to withdraw and extend them, it merely becomes necessary to .raise one longitudinal edge of the table with one hand as, for example, the left hand side at Fig. 3, and grasping with theother hand the forward edge of the leaf 31 at the recess 35 until its front edge appears below the edge of the main'top portion 14, whereupon the top 14 may be permitted to drop or rest upon the partially withdrawn leaf 31.
Thereupon the extension leaf may be fully extended until the front edges of the stops 33 engage the rear side of member 10 to limit the further withdrawal of the leaf, Whereupon, the edge of the main top will drop down aeeaoeo position hehind the inner edge of the and rest upon the upper sur- 84 of the slide rails29. The upper sur- -laces of the extension or leat members will he protected against injury or scratching ,by the projecting lower edges of the longitudinal frame members 17, which extend below the lower edge of the inturned flange of top.
A similar method of withdrawing or extending the lead at the right hand side in e lligs. 3, and 5 is carried out. lhe relafl tlt Z-fi positions or the stops 32 32, is such that tie inner edges oil the leaves 30 and 31 are so spaced apart as to accommodate snugly, yet
freely between them, the main table (op 14:. lln such fully entended operative position the upper surface of the top 14 will occupy a horizontal planecoinciding with that of the upper surfaces oi. the leaves 30 and 31.
1t has proved very diilicult in folding tiles to arrange the various parts so that a drawer of any considerahle size may be provided. According to my construction, with th slide rails located widely apart and transversely of the frame, ample space is provided for the location of a drawer which pulls out from the cenmr portion or the side frames. A drawer 36 is illustrated disposed in an opening formed in one of the side frame members 10. Suitable slide rails 39 are secured in the proper position to the trams members it) to slidahly support the drawer.
lln certain instances it has been found pret- W erahle to employ as the means tor-securing the tahle top to the supporting top a pair of angle plates 40, as shown in Fig. 7. lln such cases two plates 40 are employed and one leg l0 secured rigidly to the under side each end of the central bar 18 of the top name 17, while the other depending leg 40 is provided with a longitudinal slot l2 to loosely receive a screw or holt l3 which is ri idly secured to the inner side of the end irarne memher ll in order to accord a limrnovement to said angle plate and the tahle top to which it is secured.
Having thus described my said invention, what- 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
