Description

Dec. 27, 1932. DIXON 1,892,484
MACHINE FOR COATING PAPER, FABRIC, OR THE LIKE Eiled March 15. 1930 I8 G 0 J 0 a G 17 P13 flam- H. I Dixon AHOIIIY UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE THOMAS HENRY LAKCELOT DIXON, OE LE'ICHWORTH, EN GLAND MACHINE FOR COATING PAPER, FABRIC, OR THE LIKE Application filed March 13, 1930, Serial No. 435,509, and in Great Britain March 15, 1929.
I This invention relates to machines for coating pa er, fabric or the like and more particular y to machines for double coating F photographic paper and the like in one op- D cration.
In machines of this character as hitherto constructed a reel of paper or fabric to be coated is disposed inside the web of the paper or fabric undergoing the coatin treatment, the paper after receiving its first coating passing round the reel to means for imparting the second coating from whence the web passes over a cooling or freezing cylinder and thence to the festooning mechanism. This arrangement, however, necessitates a large loss of material at the start and finish of each reel and it is the object of the present invention to provide an improved construction and arrangement of machine for the 30 purpose stated by the use of which the low of material is avoided and the coating operation rendered continuous.
According to the present invention a machine for coating paper or the like is provided wherein two feed reels are employed disposed at the exterior of the machine in such a manner that the web from the one can be joined on to the nearly exhausted web of the other and thus avoid the production of waste portions at the beginning and end of a. reel and enable the process to be carried on continuously.
Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates diagrammatlcally and by way of example a machine arranged -according to the invention.
In the form illustrated two supply reels of paper 1 and 2 are mounted the one above another externally of the main framework, a portion of which is indicated by 3 of a double coating machine the web 4 from one of these reels being led in an upward direction over guide rollers 5, 6, 7, 8,9 to the first coating roller 10 which is' disposed above a trough 11 in the known manner. From this coating roller and trough the web 4 next passes around a cooling cylinder 12 and over a further series of guide rollers 13, 14 by which the web is guided to the lower part of the machine where it is treated by a second coating roller 1.5 for applying a second coating to the same side of the web as that coated by the roller 10. From this point the web 15 guided again to the upper part of the ma: chine by rollers 16 and 17 where it passes around a second cooling or freezing cylinder 18 and passes thence to festooning means of usual type. I
The reels 1 and 2 are mounted in brackets 19 and 20 extending rearwardly from the machine framework 3 and are mounted in laterally adjustable bearings 21 and 22. As either reel. approaches the point of exhaustion the leading end of the paper on the second reel is joined on to the rear end of the first web and the coating process proceeds without interruption. As the web is being drawn off the second reel the empty reel is replaced by a new one in readiness for fur ther joining when the second reel becomes exhausted.
In the drawing the reel 1 is being utilized and leading end 24 from the reel 2 is passed. around a roller 23 this end being joined to the end of the web 4 as the latter is exhausted so that coating can proceed without interruption when the reel 1 is exhausted.
It is preferred so to arrange the feed of paper from either reel so that a depending 00p of paper always exists between the reels and the guide rollers over which the web of paper enters the machine. When it is necessary to join the end of one web onto a fresh reel the loop enables this to be done without stopping the operation of the machine. The 35 improved arrangement above described ne-' cessitates alterations-in the general design of the coating machine consequent upon the alteration in the position of the supply reel from 'its former position inside the web. 99 The course described for the web. however, in which its progress to the first coating roller is within the coated portion passing to the second coating roller enables the paper to be continuously treated without any danger of its coated surface being impaired.
I claim In a machine for continuous operation to coat a web, a coating means for the web, a frame carrying the coating means a roll on 199 one side of the frame adj aeent the base thereof from which the machine is adapted to u wardly draw the Web, a second roll on t e frame, said second roll being located above and outwardly offset with respect to the first mentioned roll from which a replenishing supply of the web is adapted to be drawn by the machine, and means guiding the web into the machine including amember on the frame above the rolls and substantially in vertical line with the axis of one of said rolls so that an exhausting end of web will automatically be positioned ad'acent the attaching zone of the free end 0 the replenishing Web for expeditious connection thereto While the machine is in motion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS HENRY LANCELOT'DIXON.
