Description
N. MEYER Dec. 20, 1932.
PENCIL Filed March 22, 1952 m In a Me] P. & w .c M 7 w 5 P f A tlomey Patented Dec. 20, 1932 UNITED STATES NICHOLAS MEYER, or TONAWANDA, new YORK PENCIL Application filed March 22,1932. Serial No. 600,533.
' tribution to the art to which theinvention relates.
The specific details selected for reducing the invention to actual practice have been selected and organized with the foregoing purpose in mind, and will become readily apparent from the accompanying illustrative drawing and the succeeding detailed explanation thereof. I
In the drawing. wherein like numerals are employed to designatelike parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevat-ional view of a pencil constructed strictly in accordance with the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view with portions in elevation. v
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the manually adjustable slide serving as a feeding device for the stick of lead.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5.-5' of I Figure 4.
The body of the pencil which may be of wood, is denoted by the numeral 6 in the drawing as seen in Figure 2 and has its writing end shaped as indicated at 7 for conventional writing purposes.
The intermediate portion of said body is slotted as indicated at 8 the slot extending the approximate distance disclosed. The slot communicates with the bore in which the slidable writing lead 9 is arranged. At the left hand end of the pencil is the customary metal ferrule 10 carrying the conventional rubber eraser 11.
The wooden body is encased in a paper wrapping 12 which overlies and covers the slot 8 when the pencil is new and un-used.
In addition to the paper wrapper covering the slot, an important feature of the invention is the slide or lead seating device which is generally designated by the numeral 13. This comprises a cylindrical push-rod 14 having a right-angular upstanding end portion 15 attached to the underside of the finger actuat'ng button 16. The forward edge of this upstanding part 15 is sharpened to provide a cutting knife 17 which travels in the slot and cuts the paper as the lead 9 is gradually slid out to projected writing position.
The numeral 18 designates a drag finger wh ch is pointed as indicated at 19 and attached to the button by an upstanding shank 20. The features 18 and 19 provide a pawl which is slidable in the slot and is designed to frictionally engage the bottom of the slot and prevent retrograde movement of the feed device 13 after it has been moved to a. set position.
Particular importance is predicated on the use of the paper wrapper covering the guide" slots wherein the cutting knife 17 co-operates with the paper, cutting the paper as the device 13 is gradually fed longitudinally alon the slots 8. Further novelty is also base on the use of the special feed device 13 which serves to effectively feed the lead and hold the leadin writing position due to the functioning of the simplified drag pawl made up of the partsj18and- It is thought that-the description taken in connection with thedrawing will enable a clearlunderstanding vofthe invention to be had. Therefore, a. more lengthy description isthoughtunnecessary. v
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim: 1 1. A pencil of the class described comprising a cylindrical longitudinally bored body having a slot formed in one side and opening through its outer surface and communieating with the bore, said slotterminating shortfofthe opposite ends of said body, a paper wrapper surrounding said body and covering said slot, and a slidable lead feeder arranged in the bore and slot and co-operabl-e with the adjacent end of a lead and having a cutting knife movable in said slot for gradually cutting the paper as the slide is fed progressively toward the writing end of the pencil.
2. A pencil comprising an elongated longitudinally bored] stick of wood having an elongated guide slot terminating short of the opposite ends of the stick and opening through one face thereof and in communication with the bore, a lead feeding slide having a cylindrical pushrod member slidable in said bore and engageable with the adjacent end of a lead, said rod having a r ght angularly disposed end portion provided with a cutting knife. a button attached to said end portion and disposed on the exterior of the wooden stick for convenient operation, together with a pawl carried by said button and constructed for operation in said bore, and a paper wrapper surrounding the stick and covering the guide slot, said cutting knife progressively cutting that portion of the paper which overlies the slot as the lead feeder is progressively adjusted.
In testimony whereof I affix inv signature.
NICHOLAS MEYER.
