Description

Patented Dec. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT ori-ICE HARRY A. NEFF, Ol' BELLAIBE, OHIO, ASSIGOB TO lTHE BELMONT GASKET MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, 0F OOLUMBUS, OHIO, A OORPORATION OF OHIO GASKET Application medium 4, 1931. semina.. 541,9s'i- My invention relates to caskets.
It is the object of my invention to provide a new article of manufacture for use as a covering for the outside of the bottom of a metallic casket.
It is the 'object of my invention to deaden any metallic sound that is likely to occur in the handling of a casket as, for instance, when putting the casket ina funeral car.
It is a further object .to provide such a bottom so that the casket will seat more firmly on pedestals or trucks without moving and without slipping.
It is a further object to provide such a bottom which will permit of its being moved when on a pedestal or truck without the danger of its slipping off of the truck or pedestal.
- It is a further object to provide means of attaching and a method of attaching a nonslipping material, such as wood, that the capacity of sound deadening to the metallic bottom of a casket in such-a manner as to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the wood without detaching its attaching means, at the same time presenting a neat and attractive appearance without in any way destroying the structural strength of the bottom of the casket, without penetrating it and, furthermore, with the additional advantage of reinforcing the thin metal bottom of the casket in such a manner as to strengthen it without penetrating the metal of which it is composed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the4 casket;
Figure 2 is 'a' section on the line 2-2 thereof Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 is the metal bottom of av casket which is generally designated 2. Mounted on this metal bottom are a series of parallel spaced wooden strips. Varying types of material may be used, but wooden strips are preferable. y
I provide apertures 4 in the Wooden strips cut completely through the wod and having countersunk portions 5 at the margins thereof. I insert within these apertures 4 and countersuk portions 5 an attaching button comprising a side wall 6, a bottom 7 and a ange 8. The bottom 7 is spot welded at 9 to the metallic b ottom 1 of the casket while the side Walls engage the side walls venabled to force the relatively soft wood on to the relatively rough surface 11 of the cas ket. This is an additional means of prf *enting relative movement between the wooo mil metal due to the interlocking of the soft wood in the rough metal grain.
It will be noted that the casket bottom 1 not weakened in any way and is not penetrated, but that thebuttons are spot welded thereto and serve to strengthen the bottom 1 1n addition to the wood reinforcing strips 3 having a strengthening function.
While I have adapted my invention to the use of casket bottoms, the invention `is also applicable to any other form of structure where shock absorbing, sound deadening, reinforcing material is to be adapted to a very thin metallic plate, as in elevator cages, metal furniture, or other lines -of construc- Y tion.
I do not desire to limit myself to the uses of the particular form of my invention as shown herein, but comprehend within it those modifications within the scope of my specication, drawing and claim which'may be necessary to adapt my invention to vvarying conditionsl and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A casket having a metal bottom, said'bottom being flat, a plurality of flat wooden strips covering practically the entire bottom, said wooden strips being spaced apart to allow for expansion and contraction, said strips having a plurality o`f holes arranged in if' symmetrical relation, and metal cup-shaped members countersunk in said holes and secured to said bottom for permanently attaching said wooden strips to said bottom, said members being so secured to avoid disrupting the continuity of said bottom.
` In testimony whereof, I aix my signature.
HARRY A. NEFF.
