BRACKET FOR CLOTHES HANGERS Filed Feb. 24. 1930 5 1 Patented Nov. 29, 1932 ELMER ELLSWOR'IH WIL'IKOF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS BRACKET FOR CLOTHES HANGERS Application filed February 24, 1930. Serial No. 430,893.
This invention relates to improvements in brackets for clothes hangers, and more particularly to a bracket adapted to be installed as a fixture in the cover of a wardrobe suitcase to support one or more clothes hangers therein.
The object of the invention is to provide a bracket for supporting clothes hangers from the top of the suit case cover, from which a plurality of hangers may be suspended in predetermined, spaced apart position relative to each other, and by which the hangers and clothes supported thereon will be retained in proper position, substantially parallel to the side wall of the cover, while the cover is being lowered to close the case.
In packing a suit case it is customary to rest the suit case on the side wall of the main section, with the cover in open position, the cover being then substantially at right angles to the side wall of the main section. It has been found that when the cover is moved on its hinges toward the main body section,
to close the case, the hangers and clothing swing away from the side wall of the cover, rendering it difficult to close the case without disarranging the clothes.
The bracket of the present invention is designed to overcome these objections and to retain the hangers and clothing in substantially parallel relation to the side wall of the cover regardless of the position of the cover.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a suit case embodying my invention, the cover being partly in section to show the location of the bracket for the clothes hangers.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation, partly in section, of part of the raised cover 01' the suit case showing a hanger suspended. from the bracket embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modified form of bracket adapted for holding one hanger instead of a plurality of hangers.
Fig. 5 is a. front elevation of the bracket shown in Fig. 4.
In that embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the main section of the suit case comprises a side wall 10, end walls 11, top 12 and bottom 13. The cover comprises a side wall 14, end walls 15, top 16, and hot tom 17, the latter being hinged to the bottom 13 of the main section. The top sections 12 and 16 are secured together by suitable fastening means 18.
It will be understood that the bracket for clothes hangers about to be described may be used in various kinds of suit cases. It is particularly useful in that type of case, such as shown, which rests on its side wall 10 and has its cover raised while being packed. The bracket for removably holding the hangers comprises a body 19 which may be in the form of a straight bar or rod or may be curved, as shown, and secured to the top 16 and side wall 14. v Said body 19 is apertured transversely. at 20 to accommodate one or more hangers. One end of the body 19 is provided with an ear or ears 21 andrthe op posite end with an ear or ears 22 through which the device may be secured to cover walls 16 and 14, respectively.
Forwardly of the first aperture 20 in the form shown in Fig. 3, is a tongue 23 which depends from the body 19 at such an angle to the body 19 that the tongue is substantial ly parallel to the cover wall 14. In Fig. 4. in a bracket having only one aperture 20, the tongue is indicated at 23.
A. clothes hanger 24 having arms 25 and a hook 26 is shown in position in the bracket. When the hook 26 engages the bracket body 19 through one of the apertures 20, the tongue 28 or 23 will depend from the bracket body 19 sufliciently to contact with the hanger 24 as soon as the cover is moved on its hinges toward the main section of the case. The tongue prevents the hanger and clothing from swinging away from the side wall of the cover. The tongue 23 may be of any desired form, and any type of clothes hanger with which the tongue 23 is adapted to contact may be used.
In a narrow suit case the bracket 19 may be provided. with only one aperture for. a single clothes hanger as shown'in Fig. 4, and in larger cases the body of the bracket may be elongated to accommodate any desired number of apertures to receive a corresponding number of hangers.
If a plurality of apertures and hangers are a used, regardless of the number, each hanger scope of my invention, and I do not intend to be limited to the precise form shown and described, except as pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim M 1. In a wardrobe suit case having a main section and a cover hingedly connected there to, a suspension device for clothes hangers secured in the upper portion of the cover, said device consisting of a body member for carrying clothes hangers, and a tongue rigidly depending from the body member for limiting the transverse movement of the hanger when the cover is moved on its hinges toward the main section.
" 2. In a wardrobe suit case having a main section and a cover hingedly connected thereto, a suspension device for clothes hangers secured to the top and side walls of the cover, said device consisting of a curved body membcr having a plurality of apertures for re ceiving clothes hanger hooks, and a tongue depending from the body member forwardly of the first aperture in position to contact with a clothes hanger when the cover is moved gen its hinges toward the main section.
3. In a wardrobe suit case having a main section and a cover hingedly connected thereto, a suspension device for clothes hangers secured in the top of the cover, said device consisting of a body member having a plurality of apertures for receiving clothes hanger hooks, and a tongue depending from the body member forwardly of the first aperture substantially parallel to the side wall of the eov r and of a length to contact with a clothes hanger when the cover is moved on its hinges toward the main section to prevent forward swinging movement of said hanger.
4. In a wardrobe suit case having a main section and a cover hingedly connected thereto, a suspension device for clothes hangers secured in the upper portion of the cover, said device consisting of a body member provided with a plurality of spaced apart apertures for ireceiving clothes hangers, and a tongue rigidly depending from the body member for limiting the transverse movement of the hanger when the cover is moved on its hinges toward the main section.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I afiix my signature, this 18th day of February, 1930.
