Description
Nov. 22, 1932. M. L. LARSEN LOOSE LEAF BINDER Filed OGC. 27, 1950 1, INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 22, 1932 UNITED STATES MARY' L. LARSEN, OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA i Loose-LEAF BINDER Application led October 27, 1930. Serial No. 491,370.
' This invention is for a 'loose leaf binder, and has for its main object the provision of a post type loose leaf binder, which is adapted to the insertion of additional leaves until such time as the record is complete, and pro.-
viding additional means for permanently locking said binder to. complete a permanent record.
Another object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf binder which may be used for the, temporary tiling of leaves, or which may be, used for permanent record, and permanently locked after insertion of leaves therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a conveniently operated device,
which is cheaply constructed, and yet has all the desirable features of strength, durability, ease of manipulation, and pleasing appearance.
@ther objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent asthe following description is read on the. drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention consists of a cover hinge element, formed from a strip of sheet metal, having a tube or longitudinally extending eye formed along one edge and throughout its length, and having recesses cut back through the eye to receive looking posts, the sides extending transversely from the eye having a slot formed between them, said tube andA slot being keyhole-shaped in cross section tov slidably receive a locking bar, said 315 bar consisting of a strip of sheet metal having transverse extensions formed into eyes, and locking pins fixed inthe eyes and extending forwardly therefrom, the distance between the ends of each pin being less than the distance between the locking posts adjacent thereto, and one of the pins being circumterentially recessed to cooperate with a locking post. The locking bar extends beyond` the end of the cover hinge element, and is scored adjacent the. end, and bent back, so as to permit breaking off the bent end when the device is to be permanently locked, which is prevented by the stop formed by the bent 5,0 end.
- The invention is adequately illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation drawn to an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end elevation of a book formed by the binder. f
The invention is intended to be used in conjunction with a binding` post 10, covered by Patent No. 1,1182,7 81, Feb. 5, 1924 and which consists of a cylindrical sleeve 11, in which are slidably mounted, opposed latches 12, outwardly urged by a spring 13, although I do not restrict the invention to use with a particular type of post.
The invention consists of a strip of sheet metal 14.-, having an eye 15 formed longitudinally thereof, and an interposed slot extending from the eye, and formed by o-setting the sheet as at 16, forming a key-hole type slot. Perforations arek provided ask at 17, for reception of tacks 18 used tor aiiixing the device to a cover 19 of cardboard, or other suitable material. Slots 20 are 'formed through the eye to receive locking posts 1l), or other. suitable posts. y
The locking bar consists of a strip of sheet metal 21, having transverse extensions 23 formed into eyes 22, one of said eyes having ailixed therein, by welding or other suitable means, a locking pin 24 provided with a peripheral recess 25, adapted to cooperate with the latches 12 in post 10, and the other eyes having plain pins 26 and 27, the distancey between the corresponding ends of the pins being less than the distance between the corresponding sides of slots 2O adjacent thereto. Thestrip 21 has an extension 28 at one end, which is bent at right angles to i'orm a finger lug 29, the` bar being scored at B0, whereby it may be broken oli' when it isr desired to permanently lock the device.
The pins 26, 24 and 27 are intended to engage the respective posts 10 successively which provides more convenient securing of thev cover 19, astheiirst of the pins may be engaged, and the balance of the posts are then easily aligned. Each pin is shorter than the distance between the slots adjacent thereto and, the` pins are mounted on the bar with their respective forward ends at different distances from the respective slots ahead when the bar is in retracted position, whereby when the locking bar is advanced, the pins will successively engage their respective posts in the slots.
The invention is rusedy as follows: A cover 19, with the invention attached as at 18, has posts 10 secured in the slots 20 by press-- ing the locking bar linger lug 29 inwardly to rest against the end of strip 14, which causes the locking pins 26, 24 and 27 to successively enter the cooperating posts 10, the
1. A binder element for loose leaves, in combination with a plurality of posts having transverse apertures adjacent the ends, one of said posts having resiliently urged plungers therein; said element comprising a cover edge member adapted to be attached to a cover, and having a key-hole type slot extendin throughout its length and recesses throng the eye portion of said slot adapted to receive said posts in equally spaced relation, a locking bar slidable in said slot and having a plurality of transverse extensions, lookin pins secured to said extensions and slidab within the eye portion of said slot, one of said pins being circun'iferentially recessed to cooperate with a resiliently urged plunger in one of said posts, and detachable means for preventing cooperation of said. plunger with said recess.
2. vA binder element for loose leaves, in combination with a plurality of posts having transverse apertures adjacent the ends, one of said posts having a resiliently urged latch therein; said element comprising a cover edge member adapted to be secured to the back edge of a book cover and having a key-hole type slot extending throughout its length and spaced recesses formed transversely through the eye ortion of said slot for cooperation with saidposts, a locking bar slidable in said slot and aving transversely extended eye members slidable in the eye portion of said slot; pins fixed in said eye members, the for- Ward ends of said pins being spaced apart a distance less than that between rear sides of recesses adjacent thereto, one of saidfpins having a peripheral recess adapted to cooperate with said latch, and a detachable stop member at one end of said locking bar adapted to be removed to permit permanently locking said device.
A loose leaf binder, including a plurality of posts each having a transverse aperture adjacent each end, one of said posts being provided with a resiliently urged latch, a cover edge element having a series of equally spaced transverse post receiving slots and a slide provided with a plurality of hinge pins the forward ends of said pins being unequally spaced and adapted to successively cooperate with said posts, one of said pins having a groove adapted to cooperate with said latch and detachable means on said slide for preventing cooperation of said latch with said groove.
4. A binder element for loose leaves in combination with a locking post having a latch and a plurality of leaf engaging posts, each post being provided with a transverse aperture adjacent one end thereof, said element comprising a cover edge member havlng a tubular edge and a plurality of equally spaced post-receiving slots formed inthe edge thereof, a locking bar having transverse extensions formed into eyes and slidably mounted within the tubular edge, each extension having a pin secured therein, the distance between the forward ends of two pins being less than the distance between the rear sides of the slots respectively adjacent thereto in said cover edge member, said pins being mounted with their respective forward ends at different distances from the respective slots ahead when said bar is in retracted position whereby, when said locking bar is advanced, the pins will successively engage said posts in the slots, one of said pins having a peripheral groove formed therein, said locking bar having a detachable extension beyond the end of said cover' edge member adapted to prevent registry of the peripheral groove in said one pin with the latch in said locking post. l
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature.
MARY L. LARSEN.
