IMPROVEMENT IN MUC|LAGE=HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.188,659, dated March 20, 1877; application filed February 27, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN S. NEWTON, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking'Bottle Stopples and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of I this specification.

The drawing represents a vertical section of a bottle embodying my invention.

A is the bottle, which may be of glass, metal, or other suitable material, and of any desired shape or configuration, although I prefer substantially that shown. B G represent a cap, secured to the neck of the bottle by means of a screw-thread, as indicated in the drawings, by cement or otherwise. The inner central part 0 of this cap consists of a downwardly-projecting tube, open at top and bottom, and provided with an internal screwthread. D is a delivery-tube, having an external screw-thread, which fits closely the internal screw-thread of tube 0. The lower end of tube D is reduced in size, so as to form a shoulder, d, and the lower end of tube 0 has an inwardly-projecting flange, 0, against which the shoulder at strikes; or, when preferred, a packing-washer, 0, may be interposed between the shoulder 61 and flange c, as shown. d d are ports in the lower reduced ends of the tube D. d is a cap secured to the end of this tube. The upper end of this tube has a number of deliveryports, 01 and, when preferred, another port, at, may be formed in the extreme tip end.

E is the sponge-brush or ball of some porous material, attached to the upper end of tube D by means of a wire or cord, which may, for greater security, pass through some of the ports 61 E is a thumb-plate attached to tube D just below the sponge.

The bottle being filled with blacking or other liquid, it (the liquid) may, when the parts are in the position shown in the drawing, be discharged, through the tube D and ports 01 and d into-the sponge E, and from thence it may be applied to shoes or any other object, as will be readily understood without further explanation.

It willbe seen that when the shoulder d is pressed firmly down upon the flange e or packingwasher 0, none of the liquid can escape around the outside of tube D in such manner as to soil the outside of the bottle.

It will also be seen that by turning the tube D in the proper direction, the screwthread upon its outside will withdraw the ports 01 Within the flange c, and thus prevent further discharge of the liquid from the bottle.

I do not in this patent make any claim to the combination of a sponge-holder with a blacking-bottle, broadly considered but the tube D as a central support has some advantages over a cup-shaped or flat spongesupport, because a person can easily replace the sponge, and fasten it securely by the use of simply a needle and stout thread, or a piece of flexible wire.

The liquid is evenly and quickly distributed through the sponge from the centrallylocated discharge-ports, and the liquid can be pressed out upon a shoe until the sponge is nearly dry; and my method of securing the sponge to the tube only and entirely above the thumb-plate E is important in a stopper where the tube is to be manipulated by the finger, because it prevents this plate from becoming soiled by the contents of the bottle, and is therefore a much more I desirable arrangement than would be extending the sponge over and below the edge of plate E.

Neither do I claim in this patent the combination of the sponge-support and the valve or gate attached to and operated by the sponge-support, through which liquid is delivered from the bottle to the sponge, as this combination forms the subject of another application filed by-me; but

What I do claim is- 1. In a bottle-stopper, the discharge-tube D, provided with the thumb-plate E, in combination with the sponge E, arranged outside of and secured to the tube above the thumbplate, substantially as set forth.

2. In a blacking-bottle, the combination of the sponge E, the screw-threaded tube D, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as provided with ports (1 d and the screwmy own I affix my signature in presence of threaded tube 0, substantially as set forth. two witnesses.
