Description

NOV. 1, 1932. w E :w BATES 1,885,104
BASKET Filed Feb. 5. 1951 v Inventor JVZZZJ'aIn 177 24 239 gmm A tlomcy Patented Nov. 1, 1932 UNITED STATES WILLTAM ERNEST PERCY BATES,OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA BASKET Application filed February 5, 1931. Serial No. 513,755.
The present invention relates to a basket and more particularly to' a device of this character which is adapted for use in electric or mechanical refrigerators, but it is underin with this invention may be used in any manner for which the same may be found adapted and desirable.
An important object of the invention is to provide a basket of the aforementioned character embodying the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby a basket of comparatively large capacity is provided which will require a minimum of space.
Another important object of the invention isto provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a basket of the aforementioned char acter embodying a novel construction whereby the contents thereof are exposed to the air 20 on all sides, the basket being of a construction to permit free circulation of air therethrough.
Other ObJGCtS of the invention are to provide a basket of the character set forth which will be simple in construction, light in weight, strong, durable, eflicient and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention may become apparent from a'study of the fol,-
lowing specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and
wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a basket in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section through the basket.
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal cross section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1 looking downwardly as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 designates a foraminous split cylinder having a bottom 2 which is encircled'by .an annulus 3 of angle iron cross section.v The vertical edges of the split cylinder 1 are spaced from so each other to provide a vertically extending stood, of course, that a basket in accordanceopening 4 whereby access may be convenient- 1y had to the interior of the basketfrom one side thereof.
At its upper end the split cylinder 1 is open. A metallic binding 5 is mounted on the upper end of the split cylinder and extends downwardly, as at 6, on the opposed vertical edges. thereof. The bindings 5 and 6 shield the edges of the mesh from which the cylinder 1S fOIl11GCl and also constitute reinforcing or stifiening means for the cylinder, as will be obvious. An arcuate lifting handle 7 has its ends anchored to thebinding 5, said ends be- 1ng looped in a manner to provide eyes 8 (see Figure 2) which encircle the binding 5 65 at diametrically opposite sides thereof.
The basket further includes a plurality of vertically spaced foraminous shelves 9 which may be spaced as desired in the split cylinder 1. As will be obvious, articles may be placed w on the shelves 9. or removed. therefrom through the opening 4 in the split cylinder 1.
It will thus ,be seen that a baskethas been provided which is extremely light-in weight and which embodies-the construction for permitting free circulation of air therethrough for contact with the contents of the basket.
It is believed that the many advantages of a basket in accordance with thisinvention will be readily understood, and although the so preferredembodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within th scope of the invention as claimed. What is claimed-isz- A basket of the character described comprising a split, vertically disposed, foraminous cylinder, a series of'vertically spaced, foraminous shelves mounted in the cylinder, said cylinder having laterally and constantly spaced vertical walls definingan opening to all of said shelves, a foraminous bottom in the lower endof the cylinder, a metallic binding enclosing the upper end portion of the cylinder, an arcuate carrying handle extending transversely above the cylinder and having rolled end portions encircling the binding at diametrically opposite points in a manner to connect the carrying handle Iuu thereto, an annulus of angle iron cross section encircling the lower end portion of the cylinder and constituting a base therefor, and a metallic binding mounted on the vertical 5 marginal portions of the cylinder and extending between the first named binding and the annulus.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM ERNEST PERCY BATES.
