Description

B. MOON.
TOBACCO-CUTTER. N0.188,397. Patented March 13,1877.
- fines-es Inventor UNITED STATES A ENT FTTQE;
Bone MOON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 188,397, dated March 13, 1877 application filed January 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BONG MooN', of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Implement for Guttin g Tobacco; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings. v
My invention relates to an improved cutting implement and plug-holder for shaving or cutting plug or cake tobacco into long strips, such as is known in the market as long-cut smoking-tobacco.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the holder for the plug of tobacco. Fig. 2 shows the tobacco-cutter.
A represents a base or platform, one'end of which-is supported on a beam or timber, B, while the opposite end is secured to a bench or table, or to the floor, as most convenient. Through this base or platform I make two or more pairs of holes, (J O, at a short distance apart and in the same line. In these holes I insert the ends of stakes or standards G G, so that the standards will stand in pairs, the two stakes of each pair being far enough apart to provide a space between them, which is just wide enough to admit the plug or cake of tobacco-edgewise. These stakes or standards will hold the plug or cake firmly, it being pressed down by the handwhile it is being cut.
The cutting implement consists of a handplane, H, the base I of which I provide with a metal shoe, I, through which the planebit passes. My object in providing the plane with a metal shoe is to prevent the face of the plane from becoming clogged with the oil of the tobacco, as the ordinary wooden base plane would soon be rendered unfit for use by the accumulations of gum and oil.
That portion of the plane which is in front of the bit I excavate, so as to form a chamber, K, in which the cuttings or shavings will be caught and retained. I also secure a scoopshaped guard, c, which may be leather or other suitable material, around the front end of the plane, so that it will project above the upper edge of the plane, and thus form an enlarged chamber for the reception-of the shavings.
The plug or cake of compressed tobacco having been secured between the standards G G on the platform A, the person who uses the plane, by successive strokes, in the usual way, over the end of the plug, will convert it into long strips, or what is known as long-cut tobacco. As often as the recess becomes filled it is emptied, and the process is repeated.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The plug-holder consisting of the plot I form A, with its standards G G arranged as described. v
2. The plane H, provided with the chamber K and guard i, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
Witnesses:
A. F. ADAMS, T. M. J EWETT, J 0s. F. OBEIRNE.
