Description

GyE coRNELL,
GATE.
Patented March13, 1877.
N-PETERS. PHOTOJLH'HOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
NITE PA FFIGE,
GEORGE E. CORNELL, OF EAST SAGINAW, MICHIGAN, A SSIGNOR TO SAMUEL V. PARSONS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 85,342, dated March 13, 1877; application filed February 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWARD GOR- NELL, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in 'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyin g drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,'and in which Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts This invention relates to that class of gates which are opened by lifting them out of the way 5 and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully shown and specified,
In the drawing, A A A are the posts of the gate. O O are the lifters, which are pivoted to the cross-bar 'v of the gate, and tostubs S, projecting from the ground. B is a post,
placed at a suitable distance from thegate,
and having a lever, H. D is a chain or rod, attached to the lower end of lever H, passing under a pulley, P, at the bottom of post A,
passing from thence over a pulley, P, in the upper part of post A, and finally down to one of the lifters O, to which it is attached. Ohain D is connected at t'with another chain, G, which passes over pulleys P P in post B, and having a Weight, F, attached to its end.
From the foregoing description the operation and advantages of my improved gate will be readilyunderstood. By moving thelever H, whose fulcrum is ate, downwardly, the gate is lifted and deposited on the other side of posts A When the gate sinks down it replaces lever H into its original position, (by means of weight F,) and, consequently, a repetition of the same operation from either side of the gate will replace or close the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a lifting and tilting gate, constructed substantially as herein described, the combination of posts A A, pulleys P P, post B, having lever H, and pulleys P P, rod or chain D, and chain G, having weight F, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
GEORGE EDWARD CORNELL.
