IMPROVEMENT IN PULLEV-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,3 i4, dated March 13, 1 877 application filed February 7. 1877.
' of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pulley-Block, of which the following is a specification:
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved pulley-block.
This invention has for its object to produce a pulley-block for ordinary domestic use and for marine purposes, on which the cheeks are so formed as to allow a knot in the rope to pass between the cheeks over the sheave. It frequently occurs that a broken rope cannot be readily replaced, and that it may be re tained in use by tying its ends; yet the pulley-blocks of ordinary construction do not permit a knot to pass between the cheeks over the sheave, and prevent, therefore, in many cases, the use of a rope having a knot or knots.
My invention consists in spreading or bulging the cheeks of the pulley-block between the sheave and the suspension-loop, for the purpose of thereby obtaining an enlarged opening, which will permit a knot or knots to pass over the sheave.
In the drawing, the letters A A represent the cheeks of my improved pulley-block. B
is the sheave, hung on the axle O, which has its bearings in the cheeks A. D is the sus pension-loop, applied to one end of the pulley block, for the purpose of attaching the same to a suitable support. Between the sheaveB and the suspension-loop D the cheeks A A, which may be made of Wrought or cast metal or other fit material, are bulged out to form grooves a a, which should be substantially parallel to the edge of the sheave. These grooves, facing each other, as shown, form an enlarged passage, through which any ordinary knot tied into the rope will be allowed to pass.

I claim as my invention- A pulley-block whose cheeks A A are spread apart between the sheave B and the suspension-loop D, to form a laterally-enlarged passage, a, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
