IMPROVEMENT IN KEY-HOLE/GUARDS FORl LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188.302, dated March 13, 1877; application filed February 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIJAH W. MOEFATT, of Hyde Park, of the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Safety Attachment or Key-Hole the outside of the door.
In the drawings, A denotes the door, and B a mortise-lock letinto such door in the usual `manner. 4The key-hole to the bolt is shown at a as extending through an escutcheon-plate, C, having projected from it an arm, D, provided with a slot, b, as shown, such slot being i extended into the door and the back plate of the lock-case. Within such case, and beneath the bolt, is a gate, E, which is to be applied so as to be capable of being slid across the keyhole, so as to cut off any passage through it into the lock. From this gate a shank, c,
` provided with a knob, d, extends through the slot b, in manner as represented. There is pivoted to the slotted arm D a latch, G, provided with two notches,` e f, to receive the shank c in its extreme positions, and serve to hold the gate from being moved either forward or backward.
When the key is in the key-hole, the gate is entirely out of it, and will be held in 4place by the latch. After having locked the bolt and removed the key from the key-hole, and advanced the gate so as to close the passage into the lock, such gate may be kept in place by turning down the latch.
l claim as my invention as follows:
1. The key-hole escutcheon -plate C, pro.- vided with the slotted arm D and the duplex notched latch Gr, arranged and applied as set forth.
2. The gate E, its shank c, and the duplex notched latch G, arranged and combined with the lock B, the door A, and the key-hole a, substantially as and to operate as specified.
ELIJAH W. MOFFATT.
