IMPROVEMENT IN SIEVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 185,265, dated March 13, 1877 application filed October 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. STARNES and WILLIAM M. LIPE, of Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sieves, which improvement is fnlly set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is aperspective view. cross-section of Fig. 1.
The nature and object of our invention is to constructasieve with an adjustable bottom, so that a series of bottoms of different grades can be used in the same hoop; and its novelty consists in the manner of attaching and .securing the wire cloth between two narrow metal hoops, in such a manner that strength and durability are both obtained.-
In the drawings, A represents the outward or.main hoop of the sieve, in which the adjustable bottom 13 is loosely fitted. This bottom is constructed with two narrow metal hoops, separated by e and 8, (see Fig. 2,) between which the wire cloth is secured. The inside hoop s has a flange at the upper edge, which turns inward. The outside hoop c has also a flange the same as the other at the upper edge. The flanges are for the purpose of giving strength, and forming a bearing for the wire cloth. The hoop e is of sufficient width so that the lower edge can be turned Fig. 2 is a over the edge of the hoop 8. (Shown fully in Fig. 2.) The wire cloth is placed over the hoop s. The hoop e is then pressed down over the wire cloth, which is of sufficient size to lap over the lower edge of the hoop s. The lower edge of the hoop e is then turned down, and the two are milled together, which secures the wire cloth between the two hoops, binding them permanently together, which gives both strength and durability. The bottoms are put loosely in the hoop A, which can be taken out and cleaned without injury, and others of different grades can be placed in the hoop for different materials, as the case may be.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A removable sieve bottom, consisting of wire cloth B, and inner and outer hoops s e, each hoop having a horizontal and a vertical flange, the wire cloth being clamped between the flanges of the hoops and between the lower edge of the vertical flange of the inner hoop, and the curved lower part of the vertical flange of the outer hoop, substantially as and for the purpose described.
