UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. CORNWALL, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN OR TO THE BARNARD &
LEAS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE. J
ROTARY BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,345, dated May-28, 1889.
Application filed July 9, 1888- Serial No. 279,385. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CORNWALL, of Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Bolting-Reels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a bolting-reel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the end spiders. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the braces. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate two modes of attaching the cloth to the end spiders.
This invention is an improvement in reelframes; and its objects are to reduce the cost of the reel by simplifying and cheapening the attachment of the bolting-cloth thereto, and to provide a substantial, simple, and efficient reel.
The invention consists in the novel means of attaching the bolting-cloth to the reel, and in providing a reel-frame in which longitudinal or spiral ribs are dispensed with, as will be understood from the following description and claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the central shaft of the reel, near one end of which is mounted a reel-head, B, to which one end of the boltingcloth a is secured.
C designates a spider adjustably mounted on the opposite end of the shaft by means of a set-screw, 0, playing through its hub or in any other proper manner. The end of the bolting cloth or screen next spider C has attached to it two bands or strips, D E, of webbing, ticking, or other proper flexible material, of sufficient width to overlap and inclose the rim of spider C. Aftercloth a is attached to the head of the reel, the strips D and E are placed around the rim 0 of spider O. WVhen the cloth has been properly stretched, the free edges of the strips are sewed or otherwise secured together at the outer edge of the rim of the spider, inclosing the same and securely binding the cloth thereto. The strips D E may be sewed to the edges of the screen or cloth, the latter being placed between them, thus reducing the liability of the cloth to wear and tear at its edges by more thoroughly equalizing the strain thereon, as shown in Fig. 4. The strips D E may be separate, or they may be formed of one wide band, doubled, as shown in Fig. 5.
The rim of the spider may be cylindrical, hexagonal, or of other form, the flexible bands being as readily attached to one form of spider as another. Instead of using ribs in the reel-frame, I employ circumferential braces attached to light spiders F, placed at regular.
intervals between the spider C and head B, one or more of these spiders F being employed, as found desirable.
Preferably I construct the spiders C of a cast-iron hub, O, in which is a set-screw, c, and from which project four tangential spokes, C, secured to the hub by casting their ends therein. The rim 0 of the spider is made of fiat band metal, to which the bands D E can be readily attached. It will be observed that by attaching the cloth to the rim of the spider, as described, no obstruction is offered to the flow of material from the inside of the reel. After sewing the strips around the rim of the spider, the latter can be moved on its shaft, so as to stretch the cloth properly, the spider being then secured in place by the set-screw.
I thus provide a cheap, economical, and efficient reel, dispensing with all wood or metal work on the end of the reel-frame, which has been hitherto employed to fasten the boltingcloth.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A bolting-reel frame provided at one end with a spider having a circumferential hoop, in combination with a bolting-cloth or covering for said reel-frame, having two strips of flexible material attached to the ends thereof, whereby the cloth is attached to the spider by placing its rim between said strips and fast ening the strips together beyond the edge of the rim, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a bolting-reel, of the central shaft, a head fixed thereon, and a spider at the opposite end of the reel adj ustably mounted on the shaft, and the bolting-cloth attached to said head and having" strips of my own I aifix my signature in presence of flexible material at its other end adapted to two witnesses. be lepped over the rim of said spiqer anc} fast JOHN H CORNTALL ened to each other, thereby lneloslng smd run and securing the cloth thereto, substantially Vitnesses: as described. E. H. SEIFFERT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as CHAS. S. KERNS.
