--This invention relates to improvements in shuttles adapted for cooperation with thread parters and it is the general object of the invention to provide a shuttle carrying means so placed with-respect to the weft delivered by the shuttle as to assist in the action of a thread parter external to the "shuttle.
In 'weftreplenishing looms the outgoing bobbin at the time of transfer leaves a piece of thread which extends from 'the adjacent like on the front wall ofthe shuttle positioned adjacent the delivery eye, of the latter and located between said delivery eye and the ad- 20 jacent selvage so as to cooperate'with a thread .ably into the thread groove.
parter which may be brought into action to part the thread at the time of weft replenishgroove providing a chamber in which the thread may lie without requiring the same to be pinched between the binder andthe front wall of the shuttle. It is a further ob- {iect of my present invention to provide the thread plate in the front wall of the shuttle and located so as not to protrude objection- When so placed the plate will be out of engaging position with respect to the binder and there will be no tendency to pinch the thread between the -"shuttle and the binder as the shuttle is boxed. 4.0
{my invention to employ the usual bolt which It is a more specific object of one form of holds the shuttle block in position to also re tain the thread plate in its position in the have shown my invention applied to two different-forms of shuttle,
. Fig. li's a front'elevation o'fa shuttle of i the preferred .;f orm made according tomy present invention, 1
F ig. 2 is a top plan view ofa shuttle shown in Fig.1,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1' but showing the modified formyandy g i Fig. 1 is a vertical section on line i -tor" Fig. 3 showing the manner of holding the thread cutter plate in position. I
. Referring to Figs.,l, and ,2 I have shown the preferred form of shuttle as havinga weft chamber 10. having provision as at 11' to support afbobbin so thatthesame may be expelled at the time'of weft replenishment. The. opposite end of the shuttle is provided with a-thread passage .12 in which is located a tension designated generally at 13. Leading forwardlyfrom the chamber 12 is a delivery eye 14 the forward end of which is in substantial horizontal alignm'entwith a shallow thread groove 15 extending throughout a greater'part of the length of the shuttle as set forth in Fig..1.' i V The shuttle setforth inthis form ofithe invention may be substantially the same as that shown in'patent to 'Hutchins No. 1.723,
41-23. Such shuttles employ a cover 16 which may be held in position by a vertical bolt carrying my invention into effect in its preferred form I cut'a recess 20 the front wall 21' of the shuttle *and insert therein a plate. 22, the front wall 2o of which preferably does not extend into the passage defined by the groove 15. While I-pr'efer this construction yet the invention will operateif the surface 23 extends forwardly with respect Ur I to the rearmostpart of the groove 15. The
plate may be held in, positionbv means of screws 24 screwedintothe front wall of'the shuttles By reference to Fig. 1 it will be'seen The cutting edge of the head engages the weft and pinches the same against the plate 22 so as to out the fillin at a point V63 T close forward threaded end of a screw 3a latter extends through the usual shuttle block to the eye of the shuttle. The outgoing bobbin is therefore able to carry with it the coinparatively short length of thread extending from the plate to the right through tl' 'e eye" 14 and back into the thread chamber IO; For
this reason a comparatively slight thread withdrawing action on the part of theoiitgo ing bobbin will suffice to clear the shuttle'eye.
In the modified form of the invention set forth in Figs. 3 and 4 theshuttle is provided with afront wall having therein a recess 31 similar to recess20, th'eplat'e 32 being non,-
circular and fitting intothe recess 31 so as to be held against displacement vertically'or in a direction parallel to the axis of the shuttle The plate has a boss 33 which receives the The 35 and has a head 36 accessible from the rear wall of the shuttle. As in the preferred form of the invention, the shuttle has a delivery eye 37' which lies intermediate the vertical 5 extremes of the plate 32 and therefore is positioned to engage the weft when the latter is punched thereagainst by the cutter. In the preferred form the cover holding -screw extends vertically whereas in the modified form the screw extends horizontally and can there plate in position. In the modified form the screw does not extend forwardly to the front face of the plate so that the latter is continuous within its outside perimeter to coact properly with the cutter; I i
* From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a' very simple form 'of plate or the like on a shuttle to coact with a thread parter, the plate being located very close to the delivery eye of the shuttle and extending so as to insure proper location with respect to the thread to be out. It is to be understood that the weft cutter has a sufficient vertical dimension to engage the weft. It will also be seen in the modified form that the bolt 34 serves not only to hold the shuttle eyein pomore usual form wherein the weft engaging surfaces are stationary with respect to the V shuttle, tension being caused by the characterof surface which contacts with'the weft.
It is to be understood that my invention is weft cutting head to part the'lilling eithe i 'bya cutting orv a breaking action.
I Iaving thus described my invention it will be seen that ehange'sand modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the. art without departingfrom the spirit andv scope of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I'c'laim is: f i
In a weft parting shuttle having a shuttle eye blockand a delivery eye in fixed relation with the block and aligning with a'longitudi- 'nal thread groove, means presenting a relatively hard surface set in an exterior portion. of the shuttle and having said surface extending across the groove, and securing means carried by the shuttle and holding the first named means and the block securely to the shuttle; the first named means being po-- sitioned to coact with a thread parter to sever a thread extending across said surface,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
fore be made use of in holding the thread osoia v. PAYNE. V
