This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in smoke pipe air checks especially adapted to be used in connection with domestic heating plants, the object being to provide an air check which will operate efficiently on either a horizontal or vertical type ofheating plan Another object of'my invention is to provide a smoke pipe air check which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, the
same being formed of a sheet of metal rolled into 1ts proper form so as to provide apipe section with a plurality of substantially semi- :circular shaped pockets for feedingair, into the interior of the pipe section to regulate the combustion so that a considerable economy in'the consumption of fuel will be obtained.
. f Another object of my invention is to provide: novel means for holding the damper sleeve for regulating the admission of air in position onthe casing so that it can be readilyturned and held in its. adjusted position.
A still further object of the invention is 'to provide a smoke pipe air check with a damper by means of which the draft'can be regulated to a nicety.

The sheet of metal thus formed with the pockets is preferably rolled into cylindrical form to form a pipe section, the meeting edges being preferably welded together. When the sheet of metal is rolled to produce the pockets, lateral beads 5 and 6 are formed which provide a guideway for a collar 7 which is revolubly mounted within the guideway and is provided with openings 8 adapted to register with the pockets so as to allow air to be fed into the interior of the pipesection to mingle with the products'of combustion in order to produce the desired result which is well known in the art.
The ends of the collar 7 are provided with lateral flanges 9 and 10 which are apertured and the flange 10 is provided with extensions 11 between which'is mounted a cam 12 carried normally has the tendency to draw the two flanges together in order to hold the collar or band tightly within the guideway formed by the heads 5 and 6 so as to form a substantially air tight joint between the collar and the outer circumference of the cylindrical stove pipe section.
By'this construction, when the shaft 13 is turned through the medium of the handle 14, thehead of the bolt will be forced towards the flange 10 so as to compress the spring 18 which allows the flanges 9 and 10 to separate to facilitate the revolving or turning ofthe collar in the guideway. After the collar has been moved into its adjusted position by turning the handle 14, the high portion ofthe cam will be turned out of engagement with the head of the bolt so as to release the tension of the spring which has been energlzed by the operation of the cam so as to allow said spring to deenergize and forcethe 7 two flanges 9 and 10 together in order to holdand facilitates'the revolving of the collar its guideway by reducing the frictionbetween the inner faces of the collar and the outer face ofthe stove pipe section. .It' will be noted-that thesepockets-are ar I ranged on theinterior of the pipe section in e such amanner that a space is left between the same: which allows the air enteringthe pockets tothoroughly commingle' with the products of combustion passing through the pipe section. 1 I V In order to be able to controlthe .draf through the smoke pipe air check to a nicety, I dispose therein a butterfly damper 20 which is carried by a shaft. 21 provided with a handle 22 for. operating the same, said damper having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of a radius drawn to meet the ,inner'walls of the substantially semi-circu-- lar pockets by "means of which the draft through thepipe section can be regulated and it will be noted that this damper will not completely cut oil the draft through the pipe section as there will always be an open space-betweenthe pockets through which the products of combustion can pass to the line; From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a smokefpipe' air check which can, be manufactured very cheaply and which is provided withaplurality of pockets disposed circumferentially around the interior ofa cylindrical pipe sectionhavingmeans at the lower ends for delivering air into the volume of smoke prod ucts of combustion passing therethrough,

It will also be seen that by having thecollar mounted in a guideway it is held in its proper position so as to preventany danger of the same moving longitudinally and by having the means for holding the collar -un-' 'de'r tension in position, I, provide a tight joint between the'collar and the circumferlooseningthe collar in order to allow. it; to
be manually operated and when the collar has been set in position so as to admit air through the openings formed therein into the pockets, these streams of air are delivered into the volume passing through the pipe in all directions and it will be noted that these pockets are spaced so that the volume of products of combustion pass entirely aroundthe outlet openings of the pockets. 7
By having the pockets spaced when the butterfly damper is in closed position, a plurality of separate flues are formed between v the pockets so that the check valve can never be completely closed.
Devices of this kind have been used and found entirely satisfactory in use and it has been found by experimenting that the stack will be maintained cooler with such a device and that there will be a greatsaving of fuel.
What I claim is: 1. A smoke pipe air check of the kind described formed of a sheet of metal rolled into cylindrical form and having pockets expand- 7 ed inwardly therefrom provided with lateral endof said pockets and a butterfly damper arranged within said casing and adapted to ,close the central area of said pipe section between said, pockets.
3. A smoke pipe air check of the kind described comprising a cylindrical apertured casing having a collar revolubly mounted on the circumference thereof provided with air inlet openings, said collar being provided with lateral flanges at its ends, a bolt extending through said flanges having a coil spring surrounding a portion thereof and a cam carried by said collar adapted to engage said bolt for compressing said spring.
A. An air check of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing having openings, a collar surrounding said casing having air inlet openings for admitting air through the openings of said casing, said collar being provided with lateral apertured flanges, a bolt extending through the apertures of said flanges, a spring surrounding said bolt for drawing said flanges towards each other, a cam carried by one of said flanges adapted to engage saidbolt for compressing said spring to allow said flanges to move away from one another.
5. As a new artlcle of manufacture, a
smoke pipe air check comprising a casing formed from a single sheet of metal having a plurality of internal air chambers provided with outlet openings, a collar revolubly mounted on said casing provided with open- I ings for admitting air to said chambers, means for holding the ends of said collar together under tension and means creating and for releasing said tension.
