COMBUSTION TUBE.
Application filed December 29,1924. Serial No. 758,745;
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK B. DISCO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combustion Tubes, of which the following is a specilication. l I
My said invention relates to a combustion tube for stoves and furnaces designed to be applied in the smoke outlet pipe thereof and adapted to be shifted to constrict the outlet for smoke thereby serving as a damper.
It is an object of the invention toprovide a device of this character which will produce a more complete combustion of the fuel and also a more thorough combustion of the gases generated from the fuel during the burning operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive and simple device which may be readily adapted to the conventional stove pipe.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a furnace having my invention applied thereto.

In the drawings reference character indicates a furnace of the usual hot air type having a feed door 11 and ash pit door 12 with a smoke outlet pipe 13 extending into achimney 141-. Mounted concentrically of the smoke pipe 13 is a tube 15 secured therein by means of supporting elements 16 and having at its outer end an annular radially extending flange 1'7 forming a valve head adapted to be shifted by means of the operating lever 19 to bring said valve head into contact with the end of the pipe or valve seat 18 of the pipe 13.
The tube .15 is mounted so as to move longitudinally through the supporting elements 16 and is adapted to be shifted from the position shown to the dotted line position by the operating lever. In the position shown the smoke from the furnace will readily pass out around the small tube 15 and up the chimney flue, however, when the tube 15 is shifted to the dotted line position illustrated the valve head 17 will contact or seat onthe pipe end18 closing the annular passage around the same and permit only a small volume of smoke to pass out through the tube 15.
. In order to insure a more thorough and as it passes around the tube toward the,
front end thereof where it may readily commingle with the gaseous products escaping from the fuel and as a result thereof said gaseous products will be'practically entirely consumed by the fire'inthe furnace.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the combustion tube may be readily applied to smoke pipes of different sizes without varying the construction of the same by merely providing supporting elements of a size to correspond with the internalsize of the pipe to which the sameis applied; It will also be noted that the combustion tube may be cheaply constructed of sheet metal and the thinner the tube the more thoroughly the incoming airwill be heated.

It will. be obvious to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
While in Figure 1 I have shown the valve 17 as a flat disk adapted to impinge closely against the end of pipe 13 it will be understood, of course, that other forms may be used without departing from my invention; for example, in Figure 2 I have shown a modified construction wherein the valve is of conical form and I havet provided an internal flange or head 21 on the inner surface of the pipe 13 at its end against which said valve may seat. Such construction may be preferred in some instances or even other forms, it being understood that my invention is only limited in this and other particulars by the terms of the claims.
Having thus fully described my said in vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is:
1. In combination with a furnace, a smoke outlet pipe, at concentrically mounted tube 2. In combination with a furnace having.
a fire pot, a smoke outlet pipe extending. from said fire pot, a tube supported concentrically of said smoke pipe and terminating adjacent the'upper end offsaid fire pot, an:
annular radially' extending." flange at the outer end of said tube of a diameter greater than the inside diameter of the smokepipe, means for moving; said flange agalnst the end of the smoke pipe, an air inlet in said:
smoke pipe intermediate the ends thereof for permitting air to pass into said smoke pipe around said. combustion tube to said: fire pot and through said combustion tube, substantially asset forth.
3.- In combination with a furnace having a fire pot, a smoke outlet pipe extending from said fire pot, a tube supported concentrically of said smoke pipe and terminating adjacent the upper end of said fire pot, an annular radially extending flange at the outer end of said tube of a diameter greater than the inside diameter of the smoke pipe said tube being longitudinally movable in said smoke pipe, means for moving said tube to seat the annular extending flange against the end of the smoke pipe, an air inlet in said smoke pipeintermediate the ends thereof for permitting air to pass into said smoke pipe around said combus tion tube to said fire pot and through said combustion tube, substantially as set forth. 4. A combustion tube for smoke outlet pipes for furnaces having an annular ra dially extending flange at one end thereof for engagement with the end of the smoke pipe and means for moving said flange against the end of said pipe to cause the smoke to pass through said tube and for spacing the same from the end of said pipe for permitting the smoke to pass out around said tube, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a furnace, a smoke outlet pipe, a concentrically mounted tubeextending longitudinally thereof, a radially extending: flange oncthe outer end said tube,
anv air'inlet in said smoke pipe intermediate the. end thereof, means for moving said tube longitudinally of said smoke pipe to cause said flange to contact the end of the smoke pipe whereby air Will be drawn in through the air inlet and, will be heated and commingled; with the gases in said furnace, substantially as set forth.
