UNITED STA ES PATENT OFFICE.
RANSOM SABIN, OF SHELBY, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DRIER AND SMOKE-HOUSE Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1885,07 1, dated March 6, 1877 application filed January 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RANSOM SABIN, of Shelby, in the county of Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Combined Dry-House and Smoke-House, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical section on line 3 y in Fig. 3, looking toward the front of the house. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 z in Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section online a: a; in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to houses designed for smoking and drying meat, or drying fruit, lumber, &c., and for storing ashes; and it consists of a building made of sheet metal and angle-iron, having a fireplace, and a flue running around its interior and out at the roof. It also consists inacircle provided with hooks, upon which to hang meat and other articles, and in the arrangement of swinging shelves for supporting fruit and vegetables.
In the drawing, A is the front-of the house, and B B B the three other sides, all of which are attached together by angle-iron strips 0, which are riveted .to the plates forming the sides. D is a door at the front of the house, through which to enter it. E is a fire-box attached to the front A, which is provided with a door, F, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, (and from which the flue Gr extends horizontally around the interior of the house until it reaches the fire-box, when itextends vertically through the roof, and is provided with a wire-gauze section, H, and metallic top I. Jis a damper in the vertical portion of the flue for controlling the fire, and K is a damper in the horizontal portion for admitting smoke to the interioI of the house. L is a circle attached to the upper portions of the sides A B, 850., and provided with cross-pieces M. Hooks A are secured to the circle L and cross-pieces M, upon which to hang meat to be smoked or dried.
N is a tray, having a wire-cloth bottom, and hinged at b, so that it is capable of folding up or down against the wall of the house.
Spring-supports c are attached to the side of the house, upon which the tray rests when in a horizontal position. A series of trays or shelves of this kind may be arranged around the sides of the house.
The roof 0 is convex, and is attached to end and side pieces, which shut over the sides of the house. The roof is detachable, and the sides and corner-pieces are manufactured and fitted, and the holes are punched for the rivets at the manufactory, and the parts may be shipped in small compass, and may readily be put up and riveted together at the place where it is to be used.
When the house is used for drying purposes, a fire is made in the fire-place, and the products of combustion are conducted by the flue around the interior of the house, and thence through the roof by the vertical portion of the flue.
The article to be dried is placed upon the trays or suspended by the hooks, or in case of lumber it is stacked in the most advantageous way to permit the escape of moisture.
Having thus described my invention, I; claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A smoke and dry house, consisting of the sheet-iron walls A B, having attached to their inner surface the fire-place E and the flue G, and provided with the circle L, having books a, and the detachable cover 0, combined and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The hinged tray N, and the supportingspring 0, in combination with the dry-house, constructed as shown and described.
RANSOM SABIN.
