gauges through cleaning and galvanizing ap paratus, for economys sake it is desirable that these strips be'passing simultaneouslythrough the various baths, etc., but this creates difficulty because the drawing rolls as ordi narily constructed, if spaced apart by the strips that are relatively thick, will not prop: carry along the thinner strips.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple, novel and effective drawing mechanism that will accommodate itself to strips of various widths thick.- nesses and will properly operate'on them, even when they are simultaneously passing through the apparatus. 7
An embodiment of the invention that is at present .consi dered the preferableone is illustrated in the accompanying draw ngs,-where- 1n:
igure 1 is a front elevation of the drawing mechanism.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the oppo site end to that shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line H of Figure 1.
Figures 5 and 6 are respectively sectional lines 5-5 and 6-6 of Figure 3.
views on the Figure 7 is a detailsectional view through one of the positioning rollers and its mount.
In the embodiment disclosed, a suitable base 8 is employed mounted on supporting beams 9 and carrying upstanding head plates 10 and 11. In these head plates is suitably journaled van upper drawing roll 12, which for the purpose of distinguishment"i s termed the main roll.
Beneath the roll 12 is asectional drawing roll 13 coacting with the main roll 12. This lower roll includes a central shaft 14: having diametrically opposite wings or flanges 15, forming ;keys. "Located on the shaft 14 and located end to end thereon are drive collars 16 individually movable laterally of the shaft and having internal keyways 17 that receive the lreys 15. The width of the keys 15 is less than the depth of the keyways so as to permit the said lateral play of the drive collars. Surrounding said drive collars 16 are sleeves constituting roll shell sections 18 that are also laterally movable with respect toth e shaft and are keyed to the collars 16. To that end, said collars are provided in their peripheries with keyways 19 that are disposed at right angles to the keyways 17 and in these keyways 19 are'internal ribs 20 formed on the shell sections 18. It will be noted particularly by reference to Figure 4 that the keys 20 are of less width than the depths of their keyways 19 so that the shells are free to move laterally with respect to the shaft 14; and at right angles to the lateral movement permitted the drive collars 16. i
Located beneatheach shell section or sleeve 18 is a 'presser lever 21. fulcrumed at its rear the base 8. "The free ,end' of the lever is mounted on a'depending vertically movable plunger bolt 2 1 that passes through a supporting bar 25 and is 'yieldingly urged upwardly by a spring 26 having a bearing on the bar 25 and abutting a washer 27 .ad]ust- .ablyfixed by n ts 28 to the upper end of the bolt 24. The portion of the 'lever-21'that passes beneaththe shell section or sleeve 18 carries a bracket 29 in which are journaled positioning and presserrollers 30 that bear .against'the under portion of the sleeve or shel section 18 :on opposite sidesof the central vertical plane oftheaxis of the'shaft. It will be evident therefore thatfthe'se rollers serve to prevent any horizontal lateral play on the part of .the shell sections or sleeves 18, but will permit them 'to move vertically with respect to the roller 12 and against the tension of'the' springs26. 1
Connecting tliehead plates 11 at the front side thereof, is asupportingbar 31 in which guide pins 32 are detachably and adjustably mounted for directing the strips to be drawn by the rolls, between said rolls.
The rolls may be driven by any suitable 5 means. Thus there is shown mounted on the base 8, a main drive shaft 33 geared at one end of the apparatus, as shown at 34 to a countershaft 35. This countershaft in turn through suitable gearing 36 drives the upper main roll 12 and the lower sectional roll 13. With'this structure it will be evident that if a thin strip is entered between portions of the rolls 12 and 13, the lever or levers 21' acting on theshells or sleeves'18, which are engaged by the strip, will press the strlp'firmly against the main 18 will turn freely even though they are eccentric to the axis of the shaft 14;. A thicker strip may be located alongside the thin strip and so long as it is not engaged by the same shells or sleeves 18, it will not affect the drawing action thereon, but will hold the sleeves 18, which it engages, farther awa from the main roll 12. Consequently it will be clear that strips of various gauges and various widths may be engaged and drawnby the roll structure herein disclosed.
From the'foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention Wlll be 313-3. parent to those skilled in, the art without fur-- ther description, and it'will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, promay be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
What we claim, is:

2. In-a drawing. roll structure, the combiing roll comprising a shaft, roll shell secward the main roll and permitting their individual movements away from the same, said means holding the shells against" lateral play roll 12, and the said shells ,4 roll comprising a shaft, a plurality of driving prevent their lateral portion and minor details of construction,

In a drawing roll structure, the combination with a main bearing roll, of a coacting rollcomprising a-shaft, a plurality of driving collars located on the shaft and interlocked therewith'so as to have lateral play on the shaft, a plurality of roll shells surroundingthe drive collars and interlocked therewith so as to have lateral play with respect to the shaft, the interlocking portions between the shells and collars being out of line with the interlocking portions of the shaft and collars, and means bearing against thial shells for urging them toward the main ro g 4'. In a drawing roll structure, the combination with a main bearing roll, of a coacting collars located on the shaft and interlocke therewith so as to have lateral play on the shaft, a plurality of roll-shells surrounding the drive collars and interlocked'therewith, so as to. have lateral play with respect to the shaft, the interlocked portions between the shells and collars being out of line with the interlocking portions of the shaft and collars, spring-pressed carrier arms at the side of the coacting roll opposite to the main roll, and of the arms bearing against the respective shells at spaced points to urge the shells toward the main roll and displacement to either side of the same.
5.- In adrawing roll structure, the combination with a main bearing roll, of a. coacting roll comprising a shaft, a roll section, surrounding and located on the shaft, a drive member within the roll section and interposed between it and the shaft, said drive member having an interlocking drive connection with the shaft that effects its rotation by the shaft and permits it to move laterally with respect to the shaft and also having an interlocking drive connection with the roll section to effect its rotation and permit its lateral play with respect to the drive member.
6. In a drawing roll structure, the combination with a main bearing roll, of a coacting roll comprising a shaft, a roll section surrounding and located on the shaft, a drive member within the roll section and interposed between it and the shaft, a key and keywayconnection between the drive member and shaft that secures their common rotation rounding and located on the shaft, a drive sleeve surrounding the shaft within the roll shell, a key and keyway connection between the drive sleeve and shaft that secures their tures.
