1 Claim. (01. 8046) This invention, relating as indicated to a feed table for sheets, has specific reference to the construction of a feed table adapted to be employed for the purpose of feeding metal sheets to cold rolls, and the like, in sheet mills. As is well known to those familiar with the art of sheet metal manufacture, when thesheets are passed through the cold rolls, the center portion of such rolls will be smooth, but, due to imperfections in the edges of the sheets, that portion of the rolls adjacent the necks thereof, will be marked to such an extent that, should the body of the sheet be permitted to come in contact with this portion of the rolls, a marking of the sheet would occur which would make such sheets unfit for use. Accordingly, considerable difficulty has been experienced in providing a feeding means for the sheets as the same are fed to the cold rolls, so that such sheets will at go all times be fed into the rolls in such a manner that no marking of the sheets will occur.
It'is among the objects of my invention to provide a feeding table for cold rolls which may be advantageously employed for the purpose of feeding sheet metal sheets'in the desirable manner above set forth.
During the rolling of sheet metal, as hereinbefore stated, imperfections are along the edges of said sheets, which imperfections extend for variable distances into the body of the sheets. This condition makes it necessary, in a great many cases, to feed the sheets to the rolls in a plurality of laterally displaced positions so that the central smooth portion of the rolls will contact with the central smooth portions of the sheets. A feeding mechanism for cold rolls, in order to properly feed the sheets to such rolls must be adapted to move laterally with respect to the desired movement of the sheets, so that no marking of the roll will occur.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sheet feeding table which shall be adaptable to ready adjustments so that the sheets may be properly fed to the rolls in the manner above described.
The mechanism by which the sheets are fed to the cold rolls, in order to present such sheets to the rolls in substantial alignment, must be provided with some means for aligning such sheets prior to their introduction to such rolls.
Such aligning means must be positive in its operation so that the formation of scrap sheets will be reduced to a minimum. It is among the objects of my invention to provide a sheet feeding table which is adapted to properly align the sheets prior to presenting the same to the cold rolls. Other objects of my invention will appear as the description proceeds. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the sheet feeding table comprising my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of a portion of the table illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the table illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the general arrangement of the means for mountng such table, it being noted that a number of the rolls have been omitted for convenience in showing the particular features of construction.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral I is employed to designate frame members in the form of I-beams which extend longitudinally of the table and which may rest upon suitable bed plates 2. The longitudinally extending members I have cross sills 3 preferably formed of I-beams as shown, which are framed in such members I in any suitable fashion, so that the upper surfaces thereof will be in the same plane as the upper surfaces of the longitudinal members. The above described construction, when fabricated in the manner described, serves as a rigid base upon which the table comprising my invention is movably mounted.
Movably mounted on the above described base is a frame which consists of longitudinally extending side members 4 and 5, preferably in the form of I-beams which are suitably cross braced on their lower surfaces by angle members 6 which are positioned in paired back-to-back relation, so that rollers 'I may be mounted therebetween, which rollers riding on the upper surfaces of the members 3 movably support the frame of the table. The longitudinal members 4 and 5 have secured thereto transversely extending members 8 here shown in the form of channels to which are secured racks 9. Journalled in the projecting terminals In of the cross sills 3 is a shaft II which has secured thereto pinions I2 and a hand wheel I3. The pinions I2 mesh with the racks 9 so that, upon rotation of the shaft II, theabove described frame may be moved laterally relative to its supporting base for the purposes hereinafter more fully explained.
The longitudinal members 4 and 5 have a plurality of angularly disposed bearing blocksl4 and I5 mounted respectively thereon, in which bearing blocks are journalled the necks of rolls Hi. The shafts of the roll l6, project for a short distance as at H beyond the bearing blocks l5 to which projections are secured sprockets l8 which have driving chains l9 mounted thereon by means of which driving communication is established between the several rollers. The roller adjacent one end of the frame has a gear 20 secured to its projection II, which gear is in mesh with a pinion 2| secured to the shaft of a suitable motor as 22. The motor 22 is mounted on'a bracket 23 which is secured in a suitable manner to the longitudinal member 5 so that the motor 22, the roll l6 and the driving connections between such rolls and such motor are all moved as a unit upon rotation of the hand wheel l3 in the manner hereinbefore described.
The longitudinal member 5 has vertically extending bracket members 24 secured thereto which serve as a means of support for a stop 25 which extends vertically and longitudinally along one edge of the table frame. The stop 25 is bent outwardly as at 26 at the receiving end of the table so that sheets passing from the delivery means 21 will be deflected onto the body of such table if such sheets should be discharged in a position displaced laterally from the normal position of such sheets.
The operation of the above described sheet feeding table is briefly as follows. The sheets as discharged from the delivery means 21 pass onto the angle roll table and, due to the angular displacement of such rolls with respect to the sides of such table, will be forced, against the longitudinally extending stop 25 and consequently accurately aligned preparatory to presentation to the cold rolls (not shown) occupying a position to the left of the feeding table, as illustrated in Fig. 1. When a sheet, or sheets, passes onto the angle roll table and the operator of the table observes that a lateral movement of the sheet is necessary for proper presentation of the same to the cold rolls in order to prevent a marking of such rolls, such lateral displacement or movement of the sheet prior to its being fed to the cold rolls may be quickly and accurately effected by a rotation of the hand wheel I 3 which bodily moves laterally the angle roll table. In this manner the operator can, at all times, by minimum expenditure of effort control the feeding of the sheets to the cold rolls. in a manner not possible with any forms of feeding devices heretofore employed. v
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
In apparatus of the character described a feed table for a rolling mill comprising a stationary base, and a laterally movable structure mounted on said base, said structure comprising a series of feed rolls located angularly with respect to the longitudinal extent of said base, means for driving said feed, rolls, and guide means at one longitudinal side of said series of rolls, said movable structure being laterally movable with respect to said rolling mill and being manually controlled whereby sheets passing over said feed rolls may be fed to the center of said rolling mill irrespective of the width of said sheets thus presenting the smoothest portion of said sheets to the smoothest portion of said rolls.
