Abstract

759,359. Cutting sheet glass. ASAHI GARASU KABUSHIKI KAISHA. May 4, 1953 [May 31, 1952], No. 12377/53. Class 56 Apparatus for cross cutting or scoring glass sheets comprises an intermittently movable conveyer for receiving the sheets;. means for locating the glass sheets thereon, a device for supporting at least one glass cutting tool, the device being such that the tool can co-operate with the glass sheets, means for moving the tool transversely to the direction of motion of the conveyer when the conveyer is stationary or substantially stationary and means for locating the device at a predetermined position relative to the conveyer. The glass plate is loaded from a device 35 on to a conveyer comprising a chain 1, to each link of which is secured a flat wooden plate 2, travelling round sprocket wheels 38, 38A on main shafts 8, 9 journalled in bearings on frameworks 5, 7, the shaft 8 being driven through gear wheel 10 from an electric motor with reduction gear. Small holes 3, 4 and recesses 32 are provided at fixed positions through some of the plates 2 and pins 3A held in the holes 3, 4 are adapted to be moved upwardly by fixed ramps, the pins 3A in the holes 3 being to position the glass plates initially and those in the holes 4 for cracking off or breaking the glass along the score lines. Slide rests 11, 11A for a guide frame are supported on frameworks 6 either side of the conveyer and comprise slide grooves 12, 12A of channel and V-shape section respectively along a part of the front and rear portions of their upper surfaces. The guide frame of rectangular shape, comprises two guide rails 13,.13A with each bars 14, 14A along their inside walls and having slide surfaces of V-shape and channel section respectively in their upper surfaces, the end portions of the rails being connected by bars 15, 15A. Small rollers 16, 16A of drum and rhombic forms in section respectively extend outwardly from the front and rear of the two bars 15, 15A to roll in the slide grooves 12, 12A so that the guide frame may have limited longitudinal sliding movement. Steel ropes 39, 39A secured to counterweights 17, 17A are attached to the rear ends of the connecting rods 15, 15A and pass over rollers 19, 19A extending out from the slide rests 11, 11A to hold the frame normally in the rear position. A slide bed 18, carrying the transverse cutting tool 23 on carriers 40 at either side, is mounted on the rails 13, 13A for travel transversely of the conveyer. The bed 18 carries an electric motor 20 with reduction gear, rotating a shaft 21 under the bed 18 having pinions 22, 22A meshing with the rack bars 14, 14A to move the bed in either direction, the motor 20 being stopped by limit switches 34 at each end of guide rail 13A. The glass cutting tools 23 are movable in position on the carrier 40 and are normally held in a raised position, being lowered by apparatus (not shown) when cutting or scoring is to be effected. To accurately position the guide frame relative to a glass sheet on the conveyer and to start movement of the slide bed 18, impact levers 24, 24A (Figs. 2b and 3). pivoted on both outer sides of the front guide rail 13, have one arm connected with one arm of turning levers 26, 26A, pivoted in the middle of rail 13, by connecting bars 25, 25A. When the bed 18 reaches either extremity of sliding, a projection thereon strikes the free arm of impact lever 24 or 24A causing it to move outwardly and thereby turn the lever 26 or 26A, either of the other arms of levers 26, 26A being adapted to operate an engaging lever 27. The lever 27 has a reduced end 28, engaged by levers 26, 26A, pivoted at 28A to a pair of brackets extending out from the rail 13, and the lever 27 rolls on the conveyer by means of rollers 29 on the lower side of the front portion 27A. This front portion 27A is bent at right angles to form a part 33 with a central cut-out through which swings a lug of a member 30 pivoted to the lever 27. The conveyer motor is stopped, by intermittently operated mechanism (not shown) just when the bent part 33 of the lever 27 is about to fall into one of the recesses 32 of the conveyer and forward movement of the conveyer continues for a short time, during which the bent part 33 is engaged by the rear edge of the recess 32 to move the guide frame with the conveyer for a short distance and at the same time the lower lug on the swing member 30 is engaged by the recess 32 to move an upper lug on member 30 to operate a limit switch 31 in the circuit of motor 20 to drive the bed 18 for cross cutting or scoring, one set of tools 23 being lowered. At the end of cross movement, the switch 34 is operated to stop motor 20 and the lever 24 or 24A moved to lift lever 27 to disengage the recess 32. The guide frame is then returned by the weights 17, 17A and the conveyer restarted. The glass plate moves forward under longitudinal cutting or scoring tool or tools 36 fixed over the conveyer and which can be lowered on to the glass in timed relation to movement of the conveyer. The waste edges are cracked or trimmed off by being pressed down by rollers 37 and 55 carried by connecting rods 57, 58 and by the pins 3A riding up through the holes 4, the bottoms of the pins 3A riding over fixed ramps under the conveyer. The rollers 37 and 55 are operated from a shaft carrying a chain wheel 45 and journalled in brackets 44 on cradles 43 at each side of the conveyer, the wheel 45 being rotated by a chain belt from a wheel 42 on a shaft 41 driven by means not shown. A cam 46 on the shaft of chain wheel 45 engages a roller 47 on a swing bar 48 pivoted to the bracket 44 to actuate a connecting rod 49 joined to one arm of a lever 51 pivoted to a bracket 50 on the frame 5, the other arm of lever 51 being connected by a rod 53 to a shaft 58A which carries one pair of roller 55 from brackets. The second pair of rollers 55 is carried from brackets on a rod 58B connected to shaft 58A by the rod 58. A lever 52 is 'also pivoted on the rod 49 and is linked at each side of the conveyer by rods 52A, 54 with the shafts 57 which carry the rollers 37. Specification 759,358 is referred to.
