Abstract
759,358. Cuttingsheet glass. ASAHI GARASU KABUSHIKI KAISHA. May 4, 1953 [May 6, 1952], No. 12376/53. Class 56 An automatic glass cutting apparatus comprising a continuously travelling conveyer for the glass having a cross cutting device mounted on a slide bed movable across a carriage bridging the conveyer and movable backwards and forwards in the direction of movement of the conveyer, in which the carriage forward movement is synchronized with the conveyer by a lever connected to the carriage and slide bed which falls into and engages the rear of a recess in the conveyer, which thereby brings into operation the cutting device which moves with the slide bed to effect cross cutting of the glass while the carriage moves with the conveyer. The glass plate to be cut or scored is loaded from a device 90 on to a conveyer 1A comprising a chain 1, to each link of which is secured a flat wooden plate 2, travelling continuously round sprocket wheels 8, 9 on main shafts 6, 7 journalled in bearings on frameworks 3, 4. the shaft 6 being driven through a gear wheel 10 from an electric motor with reduction gear. Small holes 86 and recesses 34 with slots 34A are provided at fixed positions through some of the plates 2, and pins 85 held in the holes 86 are adapted to be moved upwardly by fixed ramps, pairs of central pins being used to position the glass plates initially and the others for cracking off or breaking the glass along the score lines. Slide rests 18, 18<SP>1</SP> for guide carriage 5A are supported on frames 5 either side of the conveyer and comprise slide grooves of V and channel section respectively in which run rollers 22, 22<SP>1</SP> of rhombic and cylindrical shape, the rollers being secured to the side rails 21, 21<SP>1</SP> of carriage 5A which are connected in cross rails 20, 20<SP>1</SP>. The rails 20, 20<SP>1</SP> have channel and V section slide surfaces and rack bars 23, 23<SP>1</SP> along their inner walls, and a bed 25 carrying the transverse cutting tools 38 or carriers 95 along one or both sides, is mounted by rollers 24 and V-blocks 25 on the rails 20, 20<SP>1</SP>. Cords 97 secured to counterweights or springs 89 are attached to the rear ends of the carriage 5 and pass over rollers 19 mounted on brackets 19A on the frame 5 so as to return the carriage to its normal rear position. A motor 26 on bed 25 drives, by way of a reduction gear 27, a gear wheel 29 having an eccentric pin 30 cooperating with a slot 32 in a sector 31 pivoted at 33, gear teeth on sector 31 meshing with a gear wheel 31<SP>1</SP> mounted on the bed 25 which is in engagement with a wheel 35 mounted on a shaft 37 under the bed. Pinion wheels 36 at each end of shaft 37 engage with racks 23, 23<SP>1</SP> so that operation of motor 26 rocks the sector 31 to drive the bed 25 across the carriage 5A, a limit switch 24<SP>1</SP> at each end of rail 20' being contacted by one of the blocks 25B to stop the motor 26. The cutting tools 38 are adjustable along the carrier 95 and means are provided for moving the tools into contact with and away from the glass plate at the beginning and end of the cross stroke. The trip arrangement to synchronize movement of the carriage 5A with the conveyer, comprises crank levers 39, 42 pivoted at each end of rail 20' and connected by a rod 43 at their lower arms 40, 40'. A lever 45 is pivoted at 44 to brackets 44A on the rail 20<SP>1</SP> so that one arm 46 co-operates with the upper arms 41, 42A of levers 39, 42 and the other arm 45A has turned down portions 47 which enter into any one of the recesses 34. A rockable member 48 is mounted in a cut out portion of arm 45A and operates a double switch 49, on the portions 47 entering a recess 34, to start a slow motion carriage drive and on the portions 47 striking the rear of the recess, to start the motor 26. Rollers 50 under arm 45A normally engage the surface of the conveyer 1A and enter the slots 34A. The carriage slow motion drive is operated from chain wheels 52 (not shown) arranged under the conveyer to receive drive from the chains 1, each carried) on a shaft 51 journalled on the frame 5 and coupled to a shaft 53 by a magnetically controlled clutch 54, operated by switch 49. A chain wheel 56 on shaft 53 engages with an endless chain 58, carried by sprockets 57, which carries a pawl 59 to engage a lug 59<SP>1</SP> on the inside face of the rails 21, 21' to move the carriage 5A, drive being such that the speed is slower than that of the convever 1A. As the carriage is overtaken by the conveyer 1A. the portions 47 contact the rear of recess 34 to move the carriage at the same speed as the conveyer, the motor 26 then being started to effect cross cutting. At the end of its traverse, the bed 25 strikes limit switch 24<SP>1</SP> and arm 41 or 42A to move the arm 42A or 41 into contact with lever arm 46 to pivot the lever and lift the portions 47 out of the recess 34 and break the contacts of switches 49. Drive to shafts 53 is thereby stopped and each pawl 59 is returned to its original position by a counterweight on a chain belt over a sprocket 60 on shaft 53. The carriage 5A is returned by spring 89. The glass plate then moves forward under longitudinal glass cutting tools 63 carried on a rod 96 on a frame 64 supported by cradles 65, the tools being raised and lowered by a cam 66 driven through chain wheels 71 on a shaft 69 journalled in brackets 68 on frames 67 and driven from the conveyer by chain wheels 70. The glass edges are then cracked off by the pins 85 adjacent the score lines, the glass being pressed down by rollers 83, 84 at the same time. The rollers 83 on shafts 83D are mounted on shafts 83A; 83W interconnected by levers 83E; 83G and a rod 83B, the shaft 83A being connected to a crank lever 81 and thence by crank 79 to a rod 77. Similarly rollers 84 on shafts 84B are carried by rods 84A connected at one end 84C to a crank 82 and thence by arm 80 and member 7,7A to the rod 77. The rod 77 is reciprocated, to press the rollers 83, 84 into contact with the glass, from the chain wheel 71 through chain wheel 73 on a shaft 73A on which is mounted a cam on which rides a roller 75 carried bv a rod 76 pivoted at one end to a bracket 76A and at the other end to the rod 77. Specification 759,359 is referred to.
