TOBACCO PRESS Filed Sent. 24, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 .A. f fiziz'elds Inventor Patented Sept. 27, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALEXANDER F. SHIELDS, OF MOUNT STERLING, KENTUCKY TOBACCO rimss Application filed September 24, 1931. SerialNo. 564,928.
to Another object of the invention is to so construct the press that it can be readily moved from one place to another and which can be constructed at low cost.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the'several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the" appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like 01' corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is an end view of the press showing both parts thereof in open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing parts in section and with one side in closed posi- 39 tion.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the movable member of the press.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the upper part of the body part of the press.
As shown in these views, the body part A of the press, is composed of the two end members 1 of inverted V-shaped and the elongated boards 2 which have their ends connected to the limbs of the end members and the limbs of each end member are hingedly connected together at their upper ends by the hinge 3 so that the end members can be spread apart or the limbs can be positioned to form an inverted V as shown in the drawings.
The limbs of each end member are held in J-shape by a latch 4 connected to one limb and engaging an eye 5 on the other limb. A
longitudinally extending rod 6 has its ends held in recesses 7 formed in the abutting ends of the limbs of the end pieces when the same are in the position shown in Fig. 1, so that the rod is supported at the upper end of the end members, and nuts 8 or the like are placed on the ends of the rod to prevent longitudinal movement thereon. v
'Anend board 9is fastened to each limb of each end member and abuts an end of a board so 2 and projects beyond the board with the upper end of each board 9 beveled upwardly to form a space 10 to receive the end of a stick 11 on which the tobacco leaves are placed as shown at 12 in Fig. 3. When the stick is 86 placed in the spaces 10, the leaves will lie upon a board 2 as shown in Fig. 3.
The movable part B of the press consists of the end members 13, each in the shape of a flat inverted V piece, and the boards 14,
having their ends connected to the under edges of the end pieces 13, and a central member 15 is connected to the central part of each end member 13 and is pivoted on the rod 6 sothat the movable part B has rocking 76 movement on said rod 6. Thus either one of the boards 14: can be brought against the leaves 12 to clamp the same against a board 2 as shown in Fig. 2.
Posts 16 extend outwardly from the lower edges of the boards 2 and carry the clamping arms 17 which are of the curved construction shown in the drawings, so that when these arms are swung upwardly and inwardly, the V curved portions will engage the wear plates 3 18" on a board 14 so as to cause said board 14: to'exert pressure on the tobacco leaves placed between the said board 14: and a board 2. This will press the leaves as will be understood.
As will be seen when one side of the movable member B is in clamping position, the other side will be raised so that when the leaves on one stick are being pressed, an-
other stick containing tobacco leaves will be placed in the other side of the device, so that these leaves can be pressed by simply reverse ing the position of the member B after the first leaves have been pressed.
Thus it will be seen that when one side of the press is being used, the other side is open, ready to receive another group of leaves.
This press gives the tobacco pressed thereby a smoother and better appearance which will increase the sales price, the parts are strong and durable, easy to operate and can be readily moved from one place to another.
As shown in Fig. 4, the two parts of each end member 3 are connected together by the strap 19.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may. be made in the construction and in the com bination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is i 1. A tobacco press of the class described comprising a pairof end members of inverted V-shape, aboard at each side of the end members having its ends connected to intermediate portions of the limbs thereof, a pressing member pivotally connected at its center to. the upper end of the structure formed by the end members and comprising a pair of end members and a pair of boards connected therewith, for cooperating with the firstmentioned boards to press the tobacco between them, and means for forcing each board of the pressing member towards a firstmentioned board to clamp the tobacco leaves between the boards.
2. A tobacco press of the class described comprising a body part of substantially inverted V-shape, with a board at each side thereof, a presser member in the shape of an inverted flat V pivotally connected at center to the top of the body part and having a board at each side thereof, whereby the presser member can be moved to a position where one of the boards will press tobacco leaves between itself and a board of the body part while the opposite board of the presser member will be in raised position to permit the tobacco leaves to be placed on the other board of the body member.
3. A tobacco press of the class described comprising a body part of substantially inverted V-shape, with a board at each side thereof, a presser member in the shape of an inverted fiat V pivotally connected at its center to the top of the body part and having a board at each side thereof, whereby the presser member can be moved to a position where one of the boards will press tobacco leaves between itself and a board of the body part while the opposite board of the presser member will be in raised position to permit the tobacco leaves to be placed on the-other board of the body member, and clamping levers at each side of thebody'forexerting the sides of the body having their ends connected with the limbs of the end members, a rod extending from one end member to the other adjacent the upper ends of the end members, a presser member of inverted flat V -shape having endpieces at the ends thereof through which the rod passes, a board at each side of the presser member for pressing tobacco leaves between themselves and the boards of the body, outwardly extending posts at the sides of the body, and cam-faced lovers carried by the posts and exerting a pressure on the boards of the presser member.
' 5. A device of the class described comprising a body part including a pair of end members of inverted V-shape, the limbs of each memberbeing hingedly connected together at their upper ends, latch means for holding the members in inverted V-shape, boards at the sides of the body having their ends connected with the limbs of the end members, a rod extending from one end member to the other adjacent the upper ends of the end members, a presser member of inverted flat V- shape having end pieces in the ends through which the rod passes, boards at the sides of the presser member for pressing tobacco leaves between themselves and the boards of the body, outwardly extending posts at the sides of the boy, and cam-shaped levers carried by the posts and exerting a pressure on the boards of the presser member, and end boards connected to the ends of the body and extending beyond the ends of the boards thereof with their upper ends forming supports for a stick which supports the tobacco leaves to be pressed.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature.
