IMPROVEMENT IN QUILTING-FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,885, dated February 27, 1877 application filed February 8, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARSHA A. MILLS, of Columbia, in the county of Maury and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a quiltingframe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan viewof my quiltingframe; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.

A A and B B represent four corner posts or legs, which are firmly connected together to form an upright frame, in which the rear posts or. legs -B B extend up higher than the front posts A A. In the upper ends of the front posts or legs A A are placed the journals of a roller, 0, one of which journals is extended through the post and provided on the end with a pulley, a, and crank G. Di rectly opposite the roller 0, in the rear legs or posts B B, are 'two rollers, D D, as shown in Fig. 2, one above the other. At about equal distances above and below the rollers D D are two other rollers, G G, each of which has one of its journals extended through the post and provided with a pulley, b, on the same side of the frame as the pulley (1. Around the pulleys a and b is passed a cord or belt, d. The quilt or patch-work is attached to, and rolled up on, the upper roller G, and the lining is in like manner placed on the lower roller G. The ends of the quilt and lining are then passed in between the rollers D D and together fastened to the roller 0. The cotton is then placed between the quilt and lining in the horizontal part between the rollers O and D D, and as soon as this part is completed it is rolled up on the roller 0 by turning the crank O, and so on until the whole is done. The roller 0 and lower roller G are provided with ratchets i and pawls h to prevent them from unwinding.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a quilting-frame the roller (3, idle rollers D D, and rollers G G, all combined and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. The roller 0, with pulley a and crank 0, the idle rollers D D, rollers G G, with pulley b, and the cord or belt d, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
