UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM THOMAS GROSS, OF W'HITEVILLE, TENNESSEE.
HO RSE-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,519, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed March El, 1885. (X0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. CROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whiteville, in the county of Hardeman and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to horse-powers adapted more especially for use in running cottongins; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall combine simplicity of construction with durability, ease of operation, and general efficiency.
The invention consists in the improved con-. struction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, andpointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, FigQ-e l is an elevation of ahorse-power constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the top of the framing removed, and Fig. 8 is a section on the line 00 00 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of referenceindicate corresponding; parts in all the figures, A represents a vertical shaft, which in this case is mounted and has bearing in top and bottom strips, B O, which are supported by vertical posts or uprights D. Upon the shaft A is mounted a grooved pulley or band wheel, E, and secured to said shaft below the wheel E are bars E, which may be provided with any suitable arrangement of draft appliances. At one corner of the frame are provided posts or uprights G, between which is journaled a band-wheel, H, which is connected by a band, I, with a somewhat smaller band-wheel, .I, mounted in brackets K upon the top 13, the belt passing to said small band-wheel J through a hole or opening in said top. 7
Upon the shaft of the band-wheel His a pulley, L, which is connected with the grooved wheel E by a strap or belt, a.
Upon the strap a is located a pulley, I), having bearing in a bracket, 0. The said pulley is located upon the strap or band a adjacent to the point at which the latter strikes the pulley L and guides said strap or band thereto.
, M represents uprights, which are diagonally arranged with regard to the uprights G, and between saiduprights is mounted an idler, e.
Secured to the bracket 0 is a cord, f, carrying a weight, g, at its end, said cord passing over the idler c.
The operation is as follows: Motion is imparted to the wheel E by turning the shaft A and the band-wheel H through the medium of the pulley L and strap a, connecting the same with the band-wheel E. The pulley b on the strap or band a serves to guide the latter to the pulley L and prevents any possibility of its becoming detached, and by the employment of the weighted cord the bracket is held in place and the strap or band a held taut, thus preventing it from slipping upon the wheel E or pulley L.
The power before described is simple in its construction, may be built at a slight cost, is thoroughly efficieut and easy in its operation, and strong and durable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with an upright shaft having a bandwheel thereon, a shaft having a band-wheel and pulley thereon, a shaft located above the frame and carrying a band-wheel, a strap connecting the band-wheel E and pulley L, a pulley on said strap, an idler mounted in posts or uprights, and a cord carrying a weight at its end, said cord being connected with the bracket of the pulley b, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'ILLIAM THOMAS CROSS.
Witnesses J. Y. HUNDLEY, A. J. Goiyrns.
