UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. DAVIS, OF VERONA, MISSISSIPPI.
DRIVING MACHINERY FOR COTTON-GINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,667, dated May 9, 1882.
Application November 1, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. DAVIS of Verona, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving Machinery for Cotton- Gin's, &e.,of which thefollowingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a power for running cotton-g ins and similar machinery which shall have the minimum amount of friction, and which shall be simple and cheap of construction.
Reference is to be had to the a'ceompan yin g drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure Us a sectional elevation of my improved driving machinery, taken on thelinezr as, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
When my improved power is set up in an ordinary gin-house or in any building for use the frame-work shown in the drawings will be modified and partially dispensed with, the walls and frame of the building being utilized for supporting and staying the parts of the machine; but when set up out of doors the frame will consist of the main ground-sillsA A, uprights B B, lower cross-piece, O, and the upper crosspiece, D, the forward upright posts, E E, and the guideframe F. In the upper and lower cross-pieces, D and. (J, is journaled the vertical king-post H, which carries the main horizontal sheave or drive-wheel J, which is guttercd on its periphery to adaptit for use with a rope, belt, or band. Below the sheave J the king-post is provided with the arms or levers I I, to which the horses or mules are to be attached. In the forward upright posts is journaled the horizontal shaft K, which is provided with the large band-wheel or pulleyL and with the small guttered pulleyM,over which the rope or band a from the large driving-sheave passes (N0 model.)
and transmits motion to the shaft K and to the largepulleyL, which transmitsmotion tothegin or other machine, N through the belt I), which passes over said pulley and over the small pulley e of the said machine. The main belt a, as it passes from the main sheave to the small pulley M on the horizontal shaft, is supported and guided by the vertical rollers f j, which are journaled in the guide-frame F, and by the horizontal diagonally-placed rollers g g, which are fitted upon the bent arms h h, which latter arms are adjustable upon the guide-frame for guiding and changing the direction of the belt; and secured to the said frame F, and reaching toward the horizontal shaft K, are the adjustable arms h. h, to which are secured the rollers f'f', which, in connection with the adjustable arms h h and rollers g g, serve to tighten the belt.
Thus constructed, the power is very simple and cheap of construction, and runs with a very small amount of friction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The adjustable arms h h, provided with the rollers g g, and the adjustable arms h h, provided with the rollersff, in combination with the vertical guide-rollersff, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the vertical kingpost H, provided with the levers I I, and carrying the main drive wheel J, and the horizontal shaft K, provided with the pulleys L andM, the intermediate frame, F, provided with the adjustable arms h h, having the rollers g g, and the arms h h, provided with the rollers'ff', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
- WILLIAM HARVY DAVIS.
