WILLIS H. HARVEY, OF SOMERVILLE, TENNESSEE.
HORSE-POWER FOR GINS, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,407, dated June 29, 1880.
Application filed May 18, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. H. HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Fayette and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Powers for Gins, 85c. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for transmitting motion from a prime motive power to the machinery to be driven thereby; and it has for its object to simplify the construction of such mechanism and reduce the expense of the same. These'objeots I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawin gs, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a top view, and Fig. 3 a perspective view, of the same.
The letter A indicates the base of my improved apparatus, and B a frame or superstructure mounted thereon.
The letter 0 indicates a vertical shaft journaled or stepped at its lower end in the frame A, and journaled at its upper end in a hearing, D, in the cross-bar E, forming part of the frame B. The said shaft 0 carries a horizontal pulley, F, grooved at its periphery, the said pulley being firmly secured to said shaft, so as to travel with it when said shaft is rotated. The said shaft is also provided with the arms G, to which the draft-animals may be attached for operating the machine.
The letter H indicates a horizontal pulley 0 at the other in an upright, O, forming part of 5 the frame of the machine.
The letter P indicates a vertical pulley mounted on a horizontal shaft, R, journaled in bearings S in the uprights T of the frame of the apparatus.
The horizontal shaft M is provided with a fly-Wheel, U, by means of which a continuous and uninterruptedmotion maybe kept up when the machine is in operation.
The letter V indicates an endless band, cord, or chain, which passes around the horizontal driving-pulley, then around the pulley H, and, finally, around the vertical pulleys, as hereinbefore described, whereby a horizontal rotary motion may be converted into a vertical rotary motion, as and for the purposes described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatusfor transmitting motion from a prime motor to machinery, the horizontal pulley F, mounted on the vertical drivingshaft B, in combination with the smaller horizontal pulley M, the two "ertical pulleys P H, and an endless band or chain, V, the whole arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W. H. HARVEY.
