The principal objects of the invention are to provide means for receiving the longitudinal folded edge of a web coming from the former, to prevent the mis-aligning of the loose ends of the papers on account of the greater thickness at the folded edge, and to provide a roller located in advance of the folding couple with a fluted edge for the same purpose.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is an end view in section of a part of a folding mechanism to which this invention can be applied, and
Fig. 2 is a side view showing the operation of this form of the invention.
When newspapers are folded over the nose of the former, the longitudinal folded edge is generally left slightly uncreased, due to the fact that the nipping rolls between which it is led cannot be adjusted too tightly as they are considerably accelerated in speed and, having a knurled surface, cannot be expected to pinch the paper too tightly. For this reason the folded edge of the paper is expanded and in going around the cylinders, has a tendency to mis-align the loose ends of the pages due to the greater thickness of the paper along the folded edge.
The invention is shown as applied to a folding couple comprising a folding cylinder 10 and a cutting cylinder 11 to which is added a yielding cylinder 12. The web passes through the nipping rollers, in contact with the yielding cylinder, and then into the folding couple.
In order to prevent the above mentioned difliculties I provide the end of the yielding roller 12, along which the folded edge of the paper runs, with longitudinal crimps or fluted edges 20. "eration. This makes it easier for the paper to wrap itself arounda small cylinder than hasbeenthe-case heretofore and overcomes the above mentioned difficulties.
The roller 21 is mounted on a movable shaft on an arm 22 which is pivoted on a rod 23 fixed in a bearing 24 on the frame of the machine 25. A spring 26 holds the roller 21 against the roller 12 and gives it its spring pressure to accomplish the above mentioned result. The invention is simple and inexpensive. It adds little or nothing to the expense for repairs.
Although I have illustrated and described A only one form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited in these respects 7' but what I do claim is 1. In a folding machine, the combination of a cylinder in position to engage the web and having an area near the end fluted, and a roll bearing only against said fluted area for forcing the longitudinal fold in the web against the fluted edges and flattening the fold.
2. In a folding machine, the combination with the folding couple, of a roller arranged in position to engage the web before it passes thereto, said roller having an area, near the end of the roller, fluted longitudinally, and a spring-pressed roll bearing against the roller A at the edge of the web for slightly creasing the longitudinal fold in the web at short intervals and preventing the folded edge from passing to the folding couple in an expanded condition.
3. In a folding machine, the combination with the folding couple, of a roller arranged in position to engage the web before it passes thereto, said roller having an area, near the end of the roller, fluted longitudinally, a bev- H eled roll bearing against the roller at the edge s of the web, a pivoted arm on which the beveled roll is carried, and a spring for forcing the beveled roll against the fluted roller.
4. In a folding machine, the combination of g a cylinder in position to engage the web and having an area near the end fluted, and a beveled roll bearing against said fluted area for forcing the longitudinal fold in the Web against the fluted edges and flattening the fold.
5. In a folding machine, the combination of a folding couple, of a cylinder in position to engage the Web and having its area near the-end fl'uted', and a roll bearing against said fluted area only for forcing the longitudinal fold in the Web against the fluted edges and flattening the fold, said cylinder positioned to guide the Web to cause the Web to partly wrap around the circumference of one of the cylinders of the folding couple.
