Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in roll crimping machines generally and particularly seeks to provide novel crimping devices for such machines.
This invention is an improvement on roll crimping machines of the type disclosed in U. S. Patent 2,533,993, granted to H. C. Bryans on December 12, 1950.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel crimping machine particularly suitable for crimping the ends of the wrappers on various sizes of rolls of paper such as newsprint and in which the paper roll is supported on a pair of driven carrier rolls, one of which is fitted with a pair of adjustably mounted assemblies.
Another object of this invention is to provide a machine of the character stated which crimps and Wraps the wrapper ends by two successively applied crimping actions at each point of contact 0f the crimper elements with the projecting paper wrapper to effectively smooth each pleated or crimped wrapper segment before formation of the next following pleat or crimp has been started.
Another object of this invention is to provide a machine of the character stated which has fixed crimper elements and movable crimper elements, the latter being operable through cam follower and linkage connections actuated by serial contact with that carrier roll which does not carry the crimping assemblies.
A further object of this invention is to provide a machine of the character stated which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the nature of which will be more apparent, the invention will be more fully understood by reference to the drawings, the accompanying detailed description, and the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the invention as illustrated is embodied in a roll crimping .machine including a plain carrier roll and a crimping slotted carrier roll ll rotatably mounted in spaced parallel relationship immediately below the level of the finishing room fioor in a paper mill. The rolls Ill and H are gear driven from any suitable source of power. An ejector roller [2 suitably operated by a hydraulic or air cylinder (not shown) is located between the two rolls and serves to eject the finally crimped roll of paper from the carrier rolls.
Each end of the slotted carrier roll II is provided with a collar [3 slidably mounted thereon and operatively connected through slots i l to collars threadably engaged with opposite end portions of an adjusting screw l5. It will be appreciated that the opposite ends of the screw [5 are threaded with opposite hand threads in order that rotation of the screw 15 in either direction will serve to move the collars l3 towards or away from each other. One end of the adjusting screw l5 extends beyond its associated carrier roll Ii and carries a hand wheel it and locking wheel Ilia usable to adjust the spacing between the collars l3.
A sleeve it is also slidably mounted adjacent each end of the slotted carrier roll H and is located inboard of the associated collar l3 and provides the supporting means for the crimping elements which will hereinafter be described in detail. Each collar i3 is provided with a plurality of lugs it which are disposed in alignment with corresponding lugs l9 formed integral with the sleeve ll. Each of the lugs l9 has rigidly aiiixed thereto a stud 29 which carries a compression spring 2! interposed between the lugs l3 and 9 to resiliently bias the sleeve H away from the collar 13. Suitable lock nuts 22, 22 are provided on the projecting end of the stud 29 in order to provide an abutment limiting the movement of the sleeve ll away from the collar I3 and to provide for adjustment of the eifective force which the spring 2| can apply.
Firmly attached to each sleeve ii is a plurality of generally quadrilateral mounting plates 23. Each mounting plate carries a'crimping assembly but only one such will be here described as they are all identical. A short connecting link 24 is pivotally attached to the sleeve I! through a lug or boss 25, as shown in Fig. 3. The free end of the short link 24 is bifurcated as at 26 and is pivotally connected to and adjacent the end of a long two-piece connecting link generally indicated at 27. The link 21 includes a leading section 28 and a follower section 29 overlapping each other and being provided with slots 3d so as to be adjustably secured by bolts 3i. The leading sec- 3 tion carries a cam follower 32 at its free end. The follower section 29 has a bifurcated end 33 pivotally connected to the free end of a short rocker arm 34 secured to one end of a pivot stud 35 which in turn is rotatably mounted in and extends through an bearing boss; 35 and the outer f ollowing corner of the. associated mounting plate 23. Securely mounted to the rear end of the pivot stud 35 and behind the mounting plate is a long rock arm 31 disposed in alignment with. the arm 34. In a machine for crimping the projecting ends of a wrapperover the ends of a roll of paper covered thereby wherein is provided a pair of carrier rolls for supporting a wrapped roll of paper, means for positively driving said carrier rolls in the same direction, a pair of collars slidably mounted on one of said carrier rolls and means for positively adjusting the spacing between said collars; the combination of a sleeve slidably mounted on said first mentioned carrier roll inwardly of each of said collars and resiliently connected thereto, a plurality of radially extending mounting plates rigidly aflixed to each of said sleeves, a fixed crimper element rigidly secured to the inner face of each of said mounting plates, a movable crimper element operably associated with said fixed crimper element, a pivot stud rotatably mounted in said mounting plate and having its ends extending beyond the faces thereof, a rock arm rigidly attached to the inner end of said pivot stud and having its free end rigidly affixed to said movable crimper element, a second rock arm rigidly attached to the outer end of said pivot stud in alignment with said first mentioned rock arm, a connecting link having one end pivotally connected to the free end of said outer rock arm and its other end provided with a roller cam follower rotatably mounted thereon, a
second connecting link having one end pivotally connected to said first link adjacent the cam follower end thereof and its other end pivotally connected to said sleeve, and resilient means for constantly biasing said movable crimper element towards contact with said fixed crimper element, said connecting links being so proportioned that the cam follower end of said first mentioned connecting link will contact the other of said carrier rolls once during each revolution whereby to impart a single cycle of motion to said movable crimper element.

In a machine for crimping the projecting ends of a Wrapper over the ends of a roll of paper covered thereby wherein is provided a pair of carrier rolls for supporting a wrapped roll of paper, means for positively driving said carrier rolls in the same direction, a pair of collars slidably mounted on one of said carrier rolls and means for positively adjusting the spacing between said collars; the combination of a sleeve slidably mounted on said first mentioned carrier roll inwardly of each of said collars and resiliently connected thereto, a plurality of radially extending mounting plates rigidly aifixed to each of said sleeves, a fixed crimper element rigidly secured to the inner face of each of said mounting plates, a movable crimper element operably associated with said fixed crimper element, a pivot stud rotatably mounted in said mounting plate and having its ends extending beyond the faces thereof, a rock arm rigidly attached to the inner end of said pivot stud and having its free end rigidly affixed to said movable crimper element, a second rock arm rigidly attached to the outer end of said pivot stud in alignment with said first mentioned rock arm, a connecting link having one end pivotally connected to the free end of said outer rock arm and its other end provided with a roller cam follower rotatably mounted thereon, a second connecting link having one end pivotally connected to said first link adjacent the cam follower end thereof and its other end pivotally connected to said sleeve, and resilient means for constantly biasing said movable crimpor element towards contact with said fixed crimper element, said connecting links being so proportioned that the cam follower end of said first mentioned connecting link will contact the other of said carrier rolls once during each revolution whereby to impart a single cycle of motion to said movable crimper element, said first mentioned connecting link being formed from two pieces adjustably secured together whereby to permit adjustment in distance between the pivotal connections thereof and to vary the amount of movement of said movable crimper element during each cycle of operation thereof.
