This vinvention relates to a device for mounting sheet glass in position to providea window as in store fronts. x Y,
It is the Vbroad objectof the invention to sition oftliesheet.` .Thusias is shown in Figure':2',the V'extension 12 has a portion -14 which normally abuts one side of the adjacent edge portionA of glass sheet 16 to define its lrelative 1 `devise a mounting forvamaterial as. sheet position `when it is in'place.'
glass of a simple construction and in which various thicknesses of sheets may be .positioned and secured. s The invention possesses other advantageous features :and objects, some of which with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full thatform of the sheet'glass mounting of my invention, which I have selected for` illustration in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said drawing I have shown oneform of sheet glass mounting embodying my invention, but it is to be understood that I do ynot limit myself to such form since the invention, as set forth in theclaim, may be embodied in a plurality of forms. Y'
Inthe drawing, Figure 1 is an elevationy of a window construction in which the mounty '25 ing of my invention is employed.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the construction illustrated inY Figure 1.
In the drawing I have illustrated my invention as employed with a conventionalwindow construction in which support members are carried upon supporting'surfaces 6 such as are ordinarily available in Vthefconstruction of the building where the window is to be provided. The support members 5 may` v comprise whatever form is desired; the only Y rigid enoughV adequately to support the sheetof glass.
The mounting means or holder 7 shownin theV drawing comprises a member 8 usually secured stationarily to the Support members 5 by screws 9, and a movable lmember 21.v
f The member 8 is conveniently cast invstrip form of a suitable material as bronze to have an. arm 11 extendingfrom it at an angle and forming an extension 12.I spaced froml theY member 8 for some little distance to provide a space 13. The, extension 12 is adapted tol provide suitablemeans for dening -thepo- I Vhave found that the installation ofthe.
sheet glass is materially facilitated blypro.- y
viding supporting'means in additionto the positioning means sothat the sheet'ofglass 1 may be supported before it is securedin position.V This supporting means is convenientlyv formed by providingavshelf 17- upon the A extension 1 2 cooperatively with'respect to the portion Y14 sothatthe weight ofthe sheet ...of f
glass', when positioned, is carried by the supportmember.;y
V'lhe` movable member 21 is used forsecur# ing the sheet of glass in position. This means is particularly adapted to facilitate vthe installation of the sheet. .In the .form.illus trated in the drawing, the movabler member 21 is adapted to 1 be mounted with respectto formed byend portions 26 upon the movable preferably of arelativesimple nature and J member 21. kIt is tobe' .noted that the end portions v26 are 'so arranged ywith respectV to the raised lip v23 that the lip and the endporf. tions are in good contact so that'theentrance of moisture through the joint issubstantially prevented. .The movablemember 21 also has f.
formed upon it a hooked lip-28 which extends longitudinally .oftheinember and adapted to furnish convenient means for engaging the member andr handling it l. so thatit maybe readily positioned.
To secure the movable member 21 in sheet` retaining position an arm 29 isv provided.V
The arm is preferably rigidly secured to the member and extends throughout its length.
Thisl is usually accomplished by casting the member 21 of a suitable material as bronze with both the arm 29 and the hooked lip- 28 upon it. The arm 29, when the movable member 21vis in position, extends into the CII plurality of points by screws 32 which eX- tend through extension l2 into space 13. Engagement with the screws urges the movable member pivotally about the lip 23 so that it retains the glass in position upon the retaining and supporting means. The freedom available due totliepivotal mounting of the retaining member relative vtothe lbase enables a variety of thicknesses to be accommodated.
In store construction the sheet retaining structure is generally covered -over Yby 'a Y sheathing indicated at 41 so that the details of construction are not observable "froinuthe exterior. In this connection, retention of the sheathing is facilitated through`- the`l interlock provided by the engagement ofthe sheathing withthe hooked lip 4QSwhich is conveniently formed 'for this purpose. They holder is provided usuallynpon the several lsides of the glass sheet, as is shown in Figure 1, wherein afportion `oif the sheathing has been cut away to illustratethe'v innericonstruction, the' holder beingprovided kinstripiorm to extend usually'througliout the l'length and Width `of the window.
